Month of March 2010 - WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

leleluvsdis - Welcome

Frank, I didn't wear shorts yesterday but wore a light pair of warmup pants. I saw in the event thread you are volunteering at Cleveland. I will try to say Hi either Saturday or Sunday.

Last weeks training went well for the most part. I got a 20min walk/run on Tuesday and a 30min walk/run Thursday, Doing 4 & 6 min. of sloooow jogging with my walking. Saturday, by sister was in town and my brother in law wanted to go out walking. We walked 1.5 to the store and back and then 2 miles home from dinner.

Yesterday, I got out and did my 7 mile walk I was supposed to do last week (nothing seemed to work out right that weekend). I still have 2 spare weeks in my schedule but I'm now in uncharted territory. Prior to this, my longest walk was 6.5 miles last fall just prior to my 10K. I picked up some of the Powerbar Gel Blasts that CVS has free after extra bucks last week. They taste a lot like gummy bears. I didn't really notice the liquid center. Walking they worked out fairly well. But, I don't know if I would like them running. They take a while to chew up. I've gotten enough packets from friend and family to carry me through the race if I decide to carry them.

Next week is finals week and my schedule will change so I will have more time during the week for training. This next couple of months looks a bit intimidating. So having the extra time will be nice.

I will make sure to throw a post on the May thread letting you know where I end up getting assigned. I signed up for both days of the expo and race day.

Hi Everyone! I am just poking my head in the door for a message on today's Monday Mixer.

Since Corinna is traveling today, I have volunteered to host the Mixer for a day.

So have a drink, relax a bit and join in the Monday Mixer with us…..
In honor of those who ran the Princess Half as their favorite princess (and other Disney races as their favorite characters), tell us all a bit about your favorite Disney characters.

Finally found the March thread!

Pat and Frank, I too am curious about the new timing device at DC National. Although, I'mm slightly worried that new may mean it comes with some problems.

I loved the RnR Mardi Gras race and am already registered again for next year and trying to figure out a way to do more RnR. Best race outside of Disney!

Last week I got in 50+ miles including a 20 miler.

Did 3.75 in 30 min. on the treadmill today

Best,
Jennifer

It looks like the Indy 500 mini-marathon is also using the new timing bibs and I don't think I am going to like them. They had a shortcut to some instructions and you can't fold the bibs, wrinkle the bibs, and should pin it on all 4 corners.

Well, I wear mine on my shorts and they get really wrinkled. I also fold it so that only the number is showing and only use 2 pins.

I'll have to see if the bibs are smaller but as of right now I am not very pleased with this.

Jen- Yeah, the RnR runs are really well done. They are just as organized as Disney and they have to deal with running on public streets instead of on controlled property like Disney. I did 3 of their events last year and would like to eventually do all of them but it is looking like this year I won't get any in. I was going to do Chicago but I have a wedding in Jersey that weekend.

If I remember correctly, the chip is actually a small strip on the back, maybe an inch wide at the most. I think as long as that part isn't folded, everything works fine. I usually put mine on my shorts/tights, even though I didn't that day, although I don't remember them telling us not to let them get wrinkled. They weren't specific at all with the instructions, and even had a rep from the company at packet pickup to demonstrate.

OK, that doesn't sound as bad as the printout they had in the Indy email made it sound. I was hoping once I got the bib I could tell where the electronics are and adjust accordingly.

I normally wear the bib as is on the lower front of my shirt. It usually ends up wrinkled by the time I'm done running. I have a habit of hitting it with my hands at some point in the race. I'm sure it'll be fine....just something new to deal with.

I actually had a good running weekend participating in my 3rd consecutive Texas Independence Relay. I felt fine running my first leg so I probably pushed it a little harder than I should have. My TFL got a little tight after leg 1 but I kept moving around/stretching as much as possible. I ran my 2nd leg about 12 hours later and ran the first 2 miles at a much slower pace. After about 2 miles, I was feeling better so I was able to push the pace for the last couple of miles. Leg 3 was about 11 hours later and I ran comfortably the entire leg... not 100% healthy but feeling pretty good.

I'm now confident that I can complete the National Half on the 20th and the Caesar Rodney Half on the 21st. I may even be able to get a couple of training runs in between now and then!!! :thumbsup2

HI WISHer Buddies. I have been sparse the last... ohhhh... nine months. Mostly because I had a hard time not being able to go to races. BUT... I am happy to announce I am back to running. My little princess was born January 14 (one week late). I was hoping she would come either before the New Year for a tax write off, or marathon weekend. I didn't get either. But I am back to attempting to train for the Minneapolis 1/2 marathon the first weekend in June. Now I need to catch up on everything.

Jen- Congratulations! I did the same to my mom. I was supposed to arrive on Dec 31 but waited until 1:05am on the 1st.

Got my 10 mile long run in today since the weather was not looking good for tomorrow. Felt great and without really pushing I managed a 1:08:46 which is good for this time of year for me. Now I have a 5 Mile race on Sat and some short runs before the half.

Hopefully everyone in the Great Lakes area is taking advantage of the nice weather.

Hi everyone,

Jen, Congrats on the baby princess!

Frank, I wanted to do Chicago 1/2 this year, but it's the weekend before school starts back.

7.25 miles in 1hr 5 minutes.

Anyone do tri's? I'd like to do a sprint one at the end of the summer. I have the running and swimming, but would I need to get a new bike? (I have a basic "mountain" bike from Wal-mart). This most likely a one and done thing, so I don't want invest a ton of money.

Thanks,
Jennifer

WOW, you start school early!! I did the Chicago 1/2 several years ago, before it was a RnR. I really enjoyed the course, however it has changed slightly since then. I wanted to do it this year, but we are planning an August WDW trip before school starts and that may be too much to fit in.

I love and hate that I am back in training. My princess turns 8 weeks old today and I am training for a 1/2 marathon already. I forced myself on the TM last night for a short workout. I am bad with finding time to run/walk/workout on weekdays!

Jen Welcome back and congrats on your new princess! I'm sure slowly but surely you'll find the time and ramp back up, so just don't put too much pressure on yourself now. You have a lot on your plate!

Jennifer Carrie just started the 2010 tri thread, so pop in and ask. I did a sprint tri last summer, and while I had a nice road bike, I saw lots and lots of women (it was a women-only tri) with every sort of bike imaginable. So it can be done. Since I know how speedy you are, you may want see if you can rent a road bike or tri bike for the race. A good bike will make your experience better.

Frank I'm definitely taking advantage of the weather. 60-ish today! So time to take the dog back on the 3.5 mile RT walk to the ice cream store (like Tuesday!)

Pat Glad your race went well and the leg is okay. And you're really doing consecutive day halfs? You must be the Goofy type.

Did my tempo run and yoga today. And tomorrow I'm off to see my DD run the Distance Medley relay at the NCAA Division III Championships at DePauw. Should be exciting.

Maura

Maura - I am definetely the Goofy type. ::yes:: Prior to doing my first Goofy this year, I did back to back half marathons on 3 separate occasions. In the fall of 2006, I did Applefest in Hollis, NH and Portland, Maine; 2007 Under Armour Baltimore and Atlantic City; 2009 Hartford and Boston. After National Half and Caesar Rodney next weekend, I've got a trail 1/2 in Cheyenne Wyoming followed by Bolder Boulder 10k the next day at the end of May this year.

Glad the weather is improving for you guys; it's 80 right now just north of Houston.

Jen-That is an early school year start, what grade level do you teach? The earliest I ever went back to school was the Tuesday before Labor Day.

Pat- Are you all ready for the National? Let me know if you are still thinking about meeting up with us for dinner on Friday evening. We will be eating somewhere close to DuPont Circle and I have some suggestions from some locals.

I used to have a free place to stay in Chicago but my friend who lived there is living and working in Germany for the next two years (starting today actually). It means no free place to stay in Chicago but a free place to stay in Germany...I can't wait to go.

I went out and did a quick 3 miles around the neighborhood. The weather was so nice out there. It even smelled like spring. Of course that could be because it wasn't so cold my nose plugged up in the first mile. :confused3

I assume many of you are still in recovery mode.

Jen and Frank, We start the first Wednesday in August, but we get out right before Memorial Day. I teach 6th grade at an elementary school (not a middle school).

I also coach high school track and hopefully will be coaching cross country next year as well.

Maura, Thanks for the advice. I didn't know you could rent a bike.

6.25 miles in 50 minutes today.

Best,
Jennifer

Wow! I missed this thread last week! I'm back from Princess weekend and I loved it. It was so much. I was so much more relaxed this time then I was for any of my previous races. I did the race with Kirsty-Leigh and another friend (a podcaster's wife). Kirsty helped me get a course record and a PR. She kept me focused and didn't let me slack off on my intervals. I am absolutely going to do this race again.

I will be shooting for 2 hours for the National, and I think I'm as ready as I'm gonna be. Back in January I would have had a completely different target time.

Dinner Friday evening sounds great; I'll be staying in the DuPont Circle area so that should work out perfect.

Are you all ready for the National?

If any one would like to watch the Miami marathon is on TV today at 11am on CSS.
You might get to see Racey Tracy (disneyfan21) and myself.

Yes I am. I did my 10 mile long run on Tuesday and it was a lot faster then I thought so I'm more ready that I thought. I'd like to stay around 1:30 but I'm not going to push if I don't feel it a couple of miles in.

We'll finalize the restaurant and time this week and I'll shoot you a PM with my number and the time.
