Month of August - WISH Team Walkers and Runners

It's been foggy all night and right now I don't really see the building which is about 300 feet from where I am working.
I guess summer is now here. Monday I did my run in Florida weather: 85F and 80% humidity. And yesterday was a day of rest. I am now in my 9th nights of work and I have only one more to go. It is quieter during the night but it is tough on the body. 2 hours and forty minutes left and I am going home :woohoo:

Have a nice day
Diane

Good Morning team!!

I know I have been missing from the weekely/monthly thread from time to time. Captianing a team does take some time away, looking for a townhouse, doing pt for my shin splints and now the WISH hat/visor order. (see link in my sig below).

I FINALLY finished my little video of the WDW Marathon weekend.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZZOloze1S0

Enjoy and hope it may help to motivate some of you.

PT is coming along. I am now doing all kinds of things to help me get better to start walking/joggin more strongly. Step up and overs, ladder drills on the floor, yikes!! Lots of work but shin is feeling good.
I started my Half marathon training this week for the Spacecoast half in November!

Have a great Wednesday everyone!

I think the fact that excited me makes me quite the dork.

Maybe. But so many of us here would have been exxcited too! Great job!

Tracy - Glad PT is giong well. Loved tehvideo you had on FB!

Diane - Glad you get a break soon! lol. Summer is hard to deal with when you've had 2 months of weather in teh 60s adn suddenly it's in the 80s. Acclimation flew right out the window.

Kara - Great that you're feeign ready! You're gonna' rock!

Megan -

I was lazy last night. Lack of sleep this week and the heat stuck me on the couch. Swimming tonight come heck or high water.

Hey kids!

Remember my debate about doing the sprint tri at Disney over Labor Day weekend?...

I signed up!!!!

I swam 3 times this week (and yes, that works different muscles than running!!) It's not pretty, but I can go the distance and the lifeguards only look amused and not concerned now, so I guess that's progress.

Yesterday I thought of my WISH peeps as I was reading my "Total Immersion" swimming book on the exercise bike at the Y. Talk about a dork!

I'm pretty excited about the race. I have no intentions of doing anything but finishing and having fun. I still love running, but I tend to want to always set PRs, and the increased training was wearing me out... ;)

Jen,

Congrats for signing up. Sounds like you have a great attitude and will do well.

I hear you on the PR thing. Sometimes (Okay--I admit--always) I think I should run a race distance faster than the last time I ran it. So it's been okay so far since I have only run each distance once or twice! But that won't always be the case, plus I'm 50 and bound to slow down. But it's hard to get the race expectations right. I've never done a marathon--but I'm already shooting for a goal time!
I think it's good to have goals--and challenging ones--I only hope it doesn't get to the point where it takes the fun out of things.

Maura

Morning everyone!

Jen, congratulations on making that decision on the Tri. Sounds like you're feeling good in the pool, so that's great? :thumbsup2

Maura, I hear ya!! I'm super competitive (grew up as a competative swimmer from 8 through 18), and it's just never left me. I am doing my first 1/2 and I started my training hoping for around 15 minute miles (I'm a walker). Now I'm seriously thinking I can be somewhere between 13:30 and 14:00 a mile, but I don't want to disappoint myself either... :rolleyes1 I know just finishing is the idea, and I'll be happy with that, but the time goal keeps calling me. :rotfl2:

Anyway, have a great Thursday everyone. 3 miler tonight, sure hope it feels better than Tuesday's walk, 'cause that one, let's just say, NOT so good.

I haven't read the whole thread but I will. I am registered for the full Marathon with my husband. He is running and I am walking. Looking for a good training plan right now. Any suggestions? Also those who have done it before any tips?

Hi and congrats on signing up!

Several of us use Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. He has half and full plans for walking, intervaling and running. I used it for my first half and full and have modified it for the Goofy.

I went out and did a little over 14 last night. It was the longest I ran and while I was a bit sore for the last 15 minutes I felt fine afterwards. I feel as though I am on track for the full in October.

After work tonight I am finally biting the bullet and getting a proper road bike. I would love a Trek or Giant but they are a bit pricey so I am going to decide between a Fuji or GT Series 4. I took my hog of a bike out last week and manged to do a respectable time (per my dork post earlier) so I figured it was time to get a real bike and see what I can do.

Tonight is a rest day. I have a kind of hilly 10K tomorrow that I will probably not run for time. It depends on how the first mile goes.

Frank,

I road testing the Giant (entry level), a Raleigh, and the Fuji 2.0 Newest. I ended up with the Fuji 2.0 Newest. It vibrated less on the bumpy roads around town.

Riders I talked to said August to the end of the year is the good time to shop, as new models will be coming out. Look or ask about sales.

The shop I went to had a virtual coupon found on Craigslist. All I had to do was mention seeing the add, and I got 25% off! If I had waited a month, the ad was then bumped up to 30% off.

WTG! Have fun!!

Jeff- Thanks for the info. I checked out the Fuji and GT and ended up with the GT. It is a slightly lighter bike and the components just felt better. The Fuji was a nice bike. I checked out the Giant Defy 2 and the Trek 1.2 and while nice bikes I was able to get the GT, spare tubes, a saddle bag, drink carrier, pump, helmet, chain degreaser, and chain lube for less than either with tax included.

I don't usually do pasta the night before shorter races but the 10K is hilly tomorrow so I'm going for it. Speaking of tomorrow's run, I found out that one of the guys I work with will be there walking along with his whole family. He had a heart transplant last year and the beneficiary of this race is Life Banc.

Frank - Have you looked at the Giant Defy. Very reasonable fr a road bike. Dh and I have had ours fro a year now. We love them. (OK, maion'es teh Avail, but it's jsu the women's version). Whatevr you end up with. ENjoy!

:welcome: Georgiasmom. Good luck on the Marathon! I am a walker too.

Frank, hope your 10K is going well!

Did my first 10 miler today, averaged a better pace than I thought I would be able to maintain, so I'm pretty happy about that. Little stiff now, though.

Started out a little tough though, the wildfires in the mountains near us are really making the air thick. We're about an hour away from the Lockheed fire. No fun, have friends that had to evacuate their home. Keeping my fingers crossed for them.

Hoping everyone's weekend is going well!!

Checking in with 17 miles today. Whew they were hot! The course I run is a 10.6 mile loop. There is a 1 1/4 mile area close to the start that is shaded well by trees. After doing the loop the first time I proceeded to just run back and forth withing that 1 1/4 mile area to finish up the 17 miles. Annoying? Yes, but less annoying than the sun was being, lol.
