Month of August - WISH Team Walkers and Runners

JEN! Don't go far! Let us know what the pool distance ends up being. It sounds like a great race to give it a Tri (i couldn't resist!). I remember Wendy talking about the May Tri and with Lynnda saying it's the same people it's got to be a great supportive time. I've only heard positive things about that Danskin.

Teri??? Any word on the MRI results?

Megan? Thinking of you.

Frank excellent time! Glad you were able to find a more comfy time to run. I can't wait for fall!

CHRIS! I'm posting!

I did the gym 3 times this week each time doing the core machines & TM. I am definitely seeing results from the core machines. Less pain though yesterday there was about the same amount of whining LOL I've decided to hang out on the TM with 3 minute intervals. 3 min @ a 12 min pace and 3 min at I think today was 16:13 pace. Felt great. Started with I'll do 2 miles then the core then back to the TM and instead did all 4 in one shot and felt pretty darn good. I thought about continuing but knew I hadn't planned on it so stepped away from the TM. I'm pretty excited about my 3 min intervals and building from there. :woohoo:

Hope the weekend miles treats everyone well!!!!

I read in a TR that the medal is only given to those who finish at the sweep pace from the initial start (5:50 a.m.). It seems small, but those 25 minutes might matter to me. Does anyone have experience with this? Do timing and medals end @ 9:20 and not 9:45? Given that I may not cross the start until 6:25 (according to the watch-your-runner Disney site) it seems more dire.

If it's down to this, I guess I'm looking for something to worry about.

Ronda

I am only speaking from what I've read on the Disney Endurance Series chat transcripts--but I think your time only starts when you cross the start line, so it shouldn't matter when the first person goes across--it only matters when your chip indicates you started. I could be wrong, but that is how I read the question on the Disney site. I'm hoping that's correct!

Nothing to worry about, your time starts when your foot hits the timing mat at the start and finish line, and those in between. Maintain a 16 minute pace or better, and you'll beat the sweepers.

yup and I need every one of those seconds....also try to get to the front of your corral as I believe the clock starts when the last person crosses the start line.

Megan: I'm only now reading your post about your grandmother. My thoughts are with you and your family. I'm hoping everything turns out well, and was glad to hear that things seem to be looking up and you've been able to get your runs in. I'm sure they help you manage the stress.

Mel: I'm doing a 4/8 this weekend, really nudging it up there. Hah! I started early because the Baltimore 1/2 is supposed to be hilly, and I might as well try to train hard for it. You're basing your training on Hidgon's Intermediate plan, right? I or II?

Mooshu: I've been working on projects with DOOD, followed by a never-ending visit from the parents. :rolleyes1

Katie: I'm not sure hilly and good go together for me, at least in terms of a race. :rotfl2: But I'm just going for the 1/2 and I do train in Pittsburgh, so I keep telling myself Baltimore will be fine. I'm horribly jealous that you're doing the RftT! I also like your attitude on your SRs, how they will make your LRs go better. I tend to treat SRs as disposable, and I should know better. Good luck on this weekends 16 miler.

Kim: Great job on your 10+ mile walk. My hands do the same thing, getting puffy in the heat. How do you deal with it? Oh, and you and me...the party at the back of the back, where we all make the most of our entry fee!

Chrissy: Oh, it's rough when you lose a running partner, I'm sure. I train alone and at first I found it tough, but now I love it. It gives me a chance to get away from it all. I understand that's not for everyone, though. Katie has give you some great advice. You might also try asking trainers at your gym (assuming you have one) if they know of any groups. Or your local running shoe store.

Michelle: Are you in taper for the DL 1/2 yet?

Erica/zakismom: Wow, that's a full running schedule. I like your logic about training and earning the bling at the same time.

Chris: Great news about DW's training. A program will help, I think. I hope she's not pushing it too much, too soon. Yours seems to be going swimmingly, as well. I feel as you do, the training just doesn't stop. On good days that's a comfort. Wish I could help you with the eating. I like to eat too much, I think.

Tracy: I'm glad your PT seems to be working and your shin is feeling good. Don't start wogging too soon. Any news on your townhouse?

Casey: That's right, you're a skirt lover. What's your favorite brand? I'm on the lookout for more stuff to wear, and keep thinking I can be convinced to convert to the skirt. (Sorry, guys, if this discussion bores you. Perhaps we'll start a thread dedicated to women's issues. :upsidedow)

Terri: I hope you got good news on your MRI and can begin training soon--but better to know what the situation is early in the Goofy game plan, right?

Alicia: Welcome to WISH! :cheer2: So glad you found us, and I know the princess thread is a warm, welcoming, and active place (impressive given how far away the race is). Your training will fly by, and I hope you feel free to drop by other threads as well. Good news on your your new shoes--my feet felt must better once I was fit properly.

Frank: Good luck with your races tomorrow! I'm impressed that you can shift around your LRs like that, and am looking forward to reading your RR. I'm sure you're going to break that 90 minute 1/2 mark and then on to BQ.

Judy: Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your work situation. But I have to say, I admire your outlook. I, too, would focus on BLT. (And if that makes us both strange to folks here, on the DIS, then all hope is lost. :rotfl2:)

Lily: Your evening walks sound lovely!

Kara: Congratulations on complete your 9 mile run without a MP3 player--and under pace! What a great feeling to know you can hit that 13:30 pace without your player. You're one tough cookie and you earned that rest/rehab day. :thumbsup2

Pat: Thanks for the reminder of the importance of XT. Mine tends to fall by the wayside during training but, like you, I've promised myself to do better for this year's Goofy. And to post here more often, too. Jinx!

JeninGA: You sound like you've made the decision that I recommend--to go for it! I love that you're approaching it as an opportunity to at least up your XT. But I think you'll do it and be able to approach it as another opportunity to have fun. Plus, maybe you and Lynnda can hang out. What a great opportunity! :woohoo:

Ronda: I think your bike commute is a great way to XT before and during your marathon training. I do a RW, good for my wonky knee and my mental state, and my time is actually faster than if I run without walk breaks. I think your mileage is fine right now, but I'm focusing on the Goofy so I'll defer to those with more half-marathon experience. I can confirm with your time starts when you cross the mat. (Speaking as a 7:00 marathon finisher last year, working with a recovering back injury.)

Diane: Great news on the core workouts. I know my core is always my weak spot. It'll make a big difference in your performance and how you feel afterwards, too! Yay for pushing yourself on the TM work and then moving on to your core training--your intervals seem to be a good decision, too! I predict a strong training/racing season for you.

As for me: My parents visited this week, which meant I had a sort of spotty workout week, XT-wise. I did manage to get my runs in, which I tend to prioritize over XT, including my 6 mile tempo run yesterday. This weekend is another B2B run. Woo hoo! Right now, DOOD and I are trying to synchronize our LR schedules. Why, I don't know. :confused3 I think we're more interested in taking rest days at the same time. (I'm waggling my eyebrows right now.)

Wow! Everyone seems to be getting in such great workouts! I am so jealous!

I got some good news today. My MRI results showed no ligament or tendon tears. Only thing that showed up was some minor swelling behind the kneecap (which I think has been there for a long time)
Previous tests showed no blood clots.
The not so great news is we still don't know what's causing the pain.

Since I know there's no clots, I'm gonna try using my stick to roll over the muscle, do some stretching to see if it loosens up. The weird thing is it only bothers me when I run - not when I bike ride or swim.

I've been taking it easy until I found out the results, so now I'm gonna go out tomorrow morning and give it a test and see what happens. Only 44 days until my next 1/2, so I have to get cracking.

Terri

Thanks for the assurances that the pace requirement is on a sliding scale :)

I hope to lose time being in awe of where I am and what I'm doing. Pictures, too.

Puffy hands - I don't get them when I run - my hands are higher I guess. When I'm walking I try to keep my hands bent/balled up. Not a tight fist or squeezing, just flexed. Really seems to help. If I forget I can really tell as they will inflate in a jiffy.

Ronda

Thanks Dee and everyone else. Grandma is doing okay. The blood clots are supposedly manageable now. I'm going home in the morning (got to get my train ticket in a bit). As long as her blood counts remain level, she will be discharged to home hospice on Sunday. They say there really isn't any reasonable treatment for her liver considering her age. I'm still going to try to talk to a doctor when I get there tomorrow afternoon.

So far our trip to WDW is on for next weekend. I will be brining DN back to Philly with me on Monday. She'll have to suffer with our TV for a few days while I am at work but she'll have access to my scrapbooking supplies too! I'll try to get online tomorrow evening and give you an update.

Oh and I went to the TnT kick off party last night and got to meet some of the other people who will be running at WDW with me!

Hello all! I have been lurking on these WISH boards for a while now. Guess I should introduce myself finally....I am a 33 y.o. stay-at-home mom for the last 8 years. I got into running faithfully about 2 months ago. I've been exercising fairly regularly for years, but wanted a goal to help me get to a better fitness level. My DH has always been a runner, so he agreed to be my "coach". My first goal would be the Princess half in March, but I'm not sure if that is going to work out with DH's work schedule. He did say however that I could train for the Donald Half in 2011--so if the Princess doesn't happen, I will attend that race instead. Long way off, but since I'm only currently running about 20 minutes at a time, I'll take all the training time I can get.

I was wondering, is there any thread on the WISH boards that discuss "gear" and "accessories". I am set with my new sneaks, but am seeing lots of discussion about running skirts. I'm also interested in knowing what types of hats/gloves people like in the winter. I'm in Ohio, by the way.

It's inspiring to hear so many great stories of people who've gotten off the couch to get out and run. Disney is my passion and my DH is beyond thrilled that now that can be combined with running!

Bibbidi:welcome: and many happy miles of training. Ask any questions you want about races, training, gear, etc. We're open 24/7/365 to answer them!

On to your questions... Yes, we have many guys who wear the running skirts here.:lmao: Actually, many of the running Princesses do, but I don't. So they'll have to weigh in on that for you.

As for winter gear, I'm in Michigan, so similar climate. But everyone is different, and what works for me may not work for you. Having said that, I run in tights, long sleeve shirt (all wicking/tech gear--Under Armour, Nike generally--whatever I can get that fits the way I like and is on sale!) I run with a UA headband, as opposed to a hat and a pair of Brooks gloves. Neither my band or my gloves are heavy duty because I get hot when I run (I usually take both off after a mile or so). It would have to be 10 degrees before I would put on a running jacket. But again, that's just me.

As for races, maybe you won't have to wait until Donald 2011. Rumor has it that there's going to be a new fall race next year--possibly a Pirate themed half.

As for me Rest day today-leg still hurts but I think I can run with it tomorrow (What, as opposed to NOT running with it-sure, I'll just leave it at home to rest!:rotfl:)

And yippeeeee! After a year of being lost, I found my race number to the Minnie race last year. I really wanted this one because it was my first real race ever, my first Disney race, and I got a cool number----696---which is the highway I take to work every day (for a little while longer anyway......)

Okay, off to work on the HIgh School Directory........

Maura

jmasgat - Thank you for the warm welcome. I forgot about the potential for a new race at Disney next Fall, so you're right, maybe I won't have to wait until the Donald in 2011!

As for my training, today is a rest day. Found out on Wednesday that I suffer from Exercise-Induced Bronchospasms so now I have an inhaler to use pre-exercise. It did seem to help on my run yesterday. I'm hoping that with my new-found ability to breathe easier while running I'll be able to break my 20 minute barrier. Tomorrow we're running on a track again to check my splits again. Last time I was running a 12:30 mile. Seems like I'll never be able to run 13.1, but that is my goal :)

Welcome fellow Ohioan. How goes it?

Yes if you can't make the Princess there is a rumored Pirate half in October. :thumbsup2
As far as clothing goes everyone is different, but I'm a layer kind of guy. I'm not faithful to one company, but run in Under Armour, Nike, Target, etc. Target is fairly inexpensive and a good product at least for men I think. My wife uses only Target stuff and it works great for her. I tend to go to the outlet malls to look (Jeffersonville if you are close) and Dick's Sporting Goods.

The hardest part is getting off the couch and you've already done that so Congrats to you!!! :happytv:

Just take it slow and build those miles up. 13.1 seems like a long way away, but you'll get there. Good Luck to you and see you around!!!

Thanks for the welcome and tips on clothes at Target, I'll have to take a look. My husband likes Nike running clothes--so guess what I have to start :)

We have a new outlet mall around our area and I know it has a Nike Outlet so once the kids are back in school I'll have to check that out.

Welcome Bibbidi from another Ohioan. There are a lot of us on the Dis.

Another think to think about clothing wise is that there are races the give you tech shirts instead of the normal cotton shirt. If you are near Cleveland I can give you a couple.

Once the weather gets above 50 I run sans-shirt but in the winter I layer. My winter stuff is all hind and brooks but I am not loyal to anything in particular.

Welcome Bibbidi!

Like everyone already said, what you wear is more an individual thing. I'll wear shorts to run in most of the time and then semi-loose fitting running pants (occasionally tights).

If it's cold I'll layer an under armor cold gear shirt under a LS shirt. I don't wear a hat.

My first WDW race in 2006, it was FREEZING! I did the entire 1/2 with a sweatshirt, gloves and ear muffs. Each time since then, it's been varying degrees of HOT!

Terri

I just got back from my run and I had to share my happiness with you all!

My easy runs had been coming in at about 10 minute miles, so today for my fast run, my goal was 9:30. I started off strong and had a half mile time about a minute faster than I had been running it. I ended the mile and looked down at my watch expecting about 9:40... but it was 9:13! Wahoo!

It's the good runs like these that keep me motivated to keep going.

WTG Alicia!! Great time on your run!

Bibbidi...definitely Target for Champion stuff, especially on sale. Do you have TJ Maxx where you are? They have a lot of stuff too. We also have a WISH team discount at runningwarehouse.com. Go to the website, click on Team Discounts in the upper right corner of the page. Enter WISHD then hit enter and it automatically takes 15% off (but doesn't work for ASICs or Mizuno).

Maura...hope the leg gets better. How are things at work?

Debra...I'm using a modified version of Higdon's Novice 1 marathon plan. I like Higdon's mileage for weekdays, but prefer Bingham's LR progression. I call it my Bingdon plan ;)

Still trying to fit RFTT and TOT into the schedule. DD16 has her homecoming dance the night before RFTT, so if I do that one, I may have to come up that morning. TOT we need to get mom to come stay with the kids...DD16 has district marching festival that night. Hoping...

Hey folks!

Nice to see some new faces. Welcome to the WiSH team!

Also nice to see a little more action on the thread. I am in post-vacation mode, and actually getting a lot done.

Somewhat arbitrarily I decided that my run on Friday was the first run in my January marathon training. So here's to getting started on that! I vacillate between very excited and scared to death, but I gather that's fairly normal. I am planning on 2 half marathons between now and then, which should be a good way to gauge how I'm doing.

I have a 6-miler on the calendar for tomorrow morning, which seems like my first real long run since the Broad Street run in May (which was 10 miles). It just ramps up from there! I am also planning to move from 2 short runs a week to 3, which I actually think will really work for me. We shall see - I've been having an uncharacteristic pain in my left Achilles after my runs lately which I've got my eye on.

Anyway, I'm just checking in and I am excited to see how everyone's training moves forward!

Good morning,
I know it is early but since I am at work (even though it is very dark outside) it is morning for me. I haven't post for a very long time but I decide it was time to come back.
I am actually training for the Race for the Taste and the Donald in January. And to make sure I follow my training plan, I have decided to start to post again so it will force me to go out and do the milleage necessary to finish both races with a big smile.
So Saturday, after sleeping a couple of hours, I was on the road at 2:00 PM to do a 6k in my best time yet. The weather was 72 degrees and sunny. I am getting used to the weather in Florida .
Have a nice day!

Diane
