Moms to Be Part 3

Hi ladies! I can't believe my little man is 2 weeks old already! He is a really good baby. Nursing didn't work out so well so he is on formula but is doing well. I panicked and took him to the dr. yesterday thinking something was wrong with him and it turned out to be gas! I don't think I'll ever stop worrying.

So here's my labor story. At about midnight on Friday morning I started feeling contractions but I had been having them for a few days and they weren't too strong. About 2 a.m. they started feeling stronger and I couldn't sleep so I thought I would time them and they were coming 4 -5 minutes apart. My dr. had said when they are 4/5 minutes apart and lasting 1 minute or more for an hour to go to the hospital. Well after about 30 minutes they started coming about 2 minutes apart at times so I said we had better get ready just in case so I took a shower and we headed to the hospital. It was 4 a.m. when I got there and they monitored me and the baby in triage for an hour. In the hour I hadn't made any progress so they said I was certainly in labor but I had two choices, I could walk for an hour and a half and see if there was any change, or we could go home and wait it out. We decided we were there so we would walk. At 7 a.m. I went back and had progressed from 2-4 centimeters so they said they were keeping me. We got admitted at 8:30 and they broke my water and started me on pitocin... the midwife breaking my water was the WORST!!! It hurt way more than I was expecting. After that I had about 4 contractions on top of each other and I asked for the epidural (even though I was planning on doing it natural - that went out the window). About 40 minutes later I had an epidural, it was around 10 a.m. by that time. Around 11a.m. they checked me and I was 10 and ready to push except I couldn't feel anything so I had to wait an hour for it to wear off enough to feel to push. Around 12 p.m. I was really feeling the contractions and needing to push and waiting on the midwife! She finally showed up and in about 10 pushes Landon was here at 12:36 p.m. All in all I spent 4 hours in active labor at the hospital. I was so glad he came quickly and safely.

CONGRATS!! Sounds like you had a fairly wonderful birth - and that is great!! So glad to hear it all went well! Enjoy your prince!

Hey Adi, did you guys hear back on the house? Did I miss that somewhere?

Ugh, I cannot find a diaper bag that I like anywhere!!!!

Do ya'll have a Burlington Coat Factory up there? I could not find a diaper bag I liked the whole time I was pregnant and then my cousin told me to look there and I found one I LOVED. It's a Carter's diaper bag, it's huge (which is what I needed cause it doubles as a purse for me) and really cute without being overly cutesy. They had a really good selection there so if you have one try checking it out :)

Yeah, we went there today and they really didn't have anything. I think the problem is that I know what I want and either can't find or it can't afford it! Chris bought one today that he wants to use, but I still want to find one that I love. I've never been a purse person, so for this to be such a big deal for me is very, very strange!

We didn't get that one :( We had the best offer, but someone came with cash and was able to get it for less than asking price because they had the cash on hand to pay for it. I dunno who has that much money just laying around, but we were quite upset. We are over it, and now looking again. . . saw some nice ones today, so hopefully!!

But they broke her water and started pitocin at 8:30am. They didnt really give her the opportunity to labor without the pitocin (and she was at 4). Maybe had they just broke her water she wouldnt have needed the pitocin? I dont know.. im just trying to figure it all out.

I had pitocin and they broke my water- I can't remember which happened first. I am pretty sure that they started a low level of pitocin and then ended up breaking my water. I had been in labor by 36 hours at that point, but I was only at like 3cm. I had been at home until that point. I ended up having nubain, but not an epidural and did just fine with my v@g birth. I was set to do it with nothing, but I was having back labor and had been contracting for SO long that I really just needed to sleep a bit. The nubain allowed me to relax in between contractions (I still felt them) and then be able to feel everything when I needed to start pushing. I would recommend considering the nubain if you are against the epi like I was.

We're back home after a great trip. We had great weather the whole time, my kids loved the Oceaneer Club on the ship so we had a lot of relaxation time, and we had a great time with our friends as well. My morning sickness really dropped off over the past 2 weeks, only throwing up twice while I was gone and just feeling a mild queasiness otherwise. That is such a relief to have that behind me. I have a dr's appt tomorrow, bloodwork for the AFP screening, then the ultrasound on Wednesday. No one really knows that I am going in for that yet so we're gonna hold off on telling our families till we see them in person (my mom will be in 2 weeks, in-laws in October) so we can make some sort of event out of it. I'm thinking of dressing my kids in either blue or pink and bringing blue or pink cupcakes along to see if they catch on. The hard part will be getting my daughter not to spill the news. Other than that, we are now deep in the trenches of laundry and preparing for school to start this week.

Congrats Karen and great photo!

Congrats on the girl amandaluvsgoofy!

Glad to see those of you due really soon are making some progress. I'm sure it seems slow, but I was 1cm and soft on a Tuesday and was holding my daughter that Thursday, so you really just never know. Regarding contractions, that whole "you'll know when you get them" is likely the best description, as lame as that sounds. Having had them for 20-22 weeks with my 1st two kids, I just sorta figured it out on my own after a week or so the first time. It was like my whole belly was hard, uncomfortable, and I guess lightly painful. Not like it hurt really, just a dull pain that lasted say 30 seconds, then it was gone along with the firm belly.

And for those interested, before I started the progresterone shots at 16 weeks I was getting 3-4 contractions a day. Since starting them nearly 3 weeks ago I have had about 2 contractions! Seems they are working well so far and will hopefully keep this one in till at least 36 weeks. And with the lidocaine injection first, I can't feel the progesterone shot at all (which is great cause that first one hurt and goes into the muscle in your butt so I was sore hours) so I don't mind getting them at all. My husband thinks it's insane that I would prefer 2 needle sticks to 1, but it really makes all the difference.

Oh, and the pitocin thing, some hospitals/drs just prefer to use it no matter what. When I had my first I was 4cm and actively laboring when I entered the hospital. The resident kept talking about pitocin and I kept declining. In 90 minutes I progressed on my own from 4-7cmand the resident still wanted to do pitocin! The nurse finally had enough of his insistance, knowing my preference, and told him I was fine, progressing on my own, and had no need for pitocin. The resident was very annoyed with her but she told us not to worry about, she wasn't going to let him keep badgering us about it.

Basically, from what my husband has seen working many nights in OB, a lot of drs just want to move things along. So you're progressing on your own and might deliver in 8 hours, but then give you pitocin and the baby is out in 4 hours. Less time they have to spend working on you. I know it sounds terrible, but they're rather get it done with than draw out the labor.

I will also add, pitocin or not, once your water breaks those contractions pick up like crazy! They did break my water with my 1st and immediately those contractions hurt a ton more. Without the cushion of all that fluid, the baby presses down with each contraction so they hurt a lot more. That is when I got my epi, and I never had pitocin. With my son my water broke at home and I didn't start contracting till about 4 hours later, but when I did they were bad right off the bat. I had to actually sit down with each one cause standing was just way too painful. And that was before I even went to the hospital. Granted I was at 8cm by the time I arrived at the hospital, but that's the point I got the epi with my 1st and the pain to that point with her vs him was significant.

Glad you had a great trip!!!!! And thanks for sharing your stories, we are month out and I am getting really freaked out about the whole thing!

I can't believe I am 6th on the list, I remember being at the bottom!

39wks and Ive dropped.... hopefully not much longer!

How exciting Maggie! It's really becoming real huh?

DH and I went to the fair yesterday and spent about 5 hours walking around. I drank about a gallon of hand shaken lemonade and probably didn't drink enough - when I got home I even noticed some sunburn on my face. Kinda nice to get some sun though! :rotfl:
I think I finally felt a contraction/BH...and tightening is definately the only way to explain it....knowing where the baby's bottom is (hard side of belly) to the soft side of belly - when they felt the same hardness...must be a BH. Didn't hurt any so I'm hoping the rest of them will feel the same! HA!

I think we have finally settled on names for the baby. Now we just need to wait until my ultrasound on the 17th! I cannot wait!! I am ready to do some major shopping!!! I think DH is going to be the same way. On his downtime overseas, he is constantly surfing, looking for things to buy! Apparently, the military is giving him too much time on his hands!

Congrats on getting names picked out! :thumbsup2 You are way ahead of us. We do have a first name for a boy, but no middle name, and if it's a girl, well, we have ZERO agreement there for any name. Sebastian is our boy name and for a girl I really want to name her Tierney but my husband hates it. He doesn't really have any alternatives though. My MIL loves the name Tierney so I do have some support there to push my husband in that direction, but it will be a hard battle.

We have never really waivered on a boy's name. I think we finally nailed down a girl's name this weekend. I stopped at the library and picked up a baby name book, and spent time with it this weekend. We have always had a baby girl's middle name picked out (DH's mother's middle name), it was just the first name that was giving us trouble. Come to think of it, we never really had a girl name nailed down for DS either!!

We didn't have one for our son either, as we had the same battle at that time over the girl name too. My son's name was easy (he's named after my dad), but the girl nam is giving us trouble!

Congrats!! We only had first names picked by the time we had the anatomy scan - and still only have a first name - although we may just do a first name (neither DH/Adi, our siblings or our parents have middle names). I'm guessing since you haven't posted them, you are not going to share the names yet??

Good Morning everyone.
Another quick "is this normal??" question for you girls.
I'm about 21 weeks now and the past few days, DH and I have been in Jersey City/NYC doing a whole lot of walking - and walking fast! The walking has gotten really uncomfortable/painful. I feel like my tummy is dragging down and it feels like I have to hold it up in order to keep moving. And been feeling a bit of that ligament stretching pain.
Is that normal? :confused3 Is it dangerous for me to keep walking? We've been trying to slow down but once you hit the streets in Manhattan, it's really really hard to move slowly.
Do those Maternity Belts help with something like this?
Thanks!!

I had my first internal exam yesterday and I was worried but it didn't end up being bad at all. I was pretty worried for nothing! Of course, I am not progressing at all but I didn't really expect to be. I haven't felt anything and I think I will probably go late which is fine with me! I am trying to extend my maternity leave until Christmas. :rotfl2:

I bought a maternity belt around 20 weeks for that same reason - I'm further along now and haven't used it in a few weeks - but I needed it more back where you are - it really helped that heavy belly feeling I had. I would make it more loose or take it off if I was going to sit for a while - but it was a great $20 investment from motherhood for me :)

Thanks Adi! That made me feel so much better to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. I'm gonna head to the mall in an hour and pick one up!
