Mom's of girls, a question

Here's a funny story that unfortunately happened to me. I don't remember it but my mother does. I think that I have probably blocked it out of my memory. When I first got my period my mom gave me a package of the Stayfree pads that are sticky on one side. Apparantly after I had to change one I asked my mother how she could stand the pain because it really hurt when I had to un-stick it from myself. My poor mother. It never even occurred to her that she had to tell me which side was which!

At age 4, she begged me for candy from the tampon machine in the ladies room at Sears. ;) I seriously considered it then. ;)

But really, I think about age 10 I gave it to her straight. Since then, we've been able to talk about anything. It was painful to do, and she was totally freaked out, but in the long run, it paid off huge. :)

Start early and talk often. It really works. :)

Wow, I can't imagine how hard this must have been, but what a great thing for you to do!!!!! I had enough trouble trying to talk through the bathroom door to my daughter, who kept asking, "Where is the small of my back?" (Remember, the illustration that comes with a box of tampons that describes how you should aim for the small of your back?? We always used to crack up when anyone mentioned it!!!)

The scary thing is most of the girls already had their periods, they just had no clue why.

I am seriously scared at the views that todays youth takes towards sex. The thing is we KNOW they get it froms today adults (I mean after all it if it ok for the president........... )

When we were at WDW last year my then 13 year old niece didn't want to go to BB because of what we are talking about. We had the old tampon talk then (through the bathroom door.) In the end she chickened out. I didn't mind at all. I figure if she doesn't want to use a tampon, I don't have to worry about her doing things with boys. (actually that isn't always true and we have talked about it.)

MELSMICE, good for your DD! (good for you for not fainting too!)

KAMLEM, ouch! :rotfl:

Yikes! :earseek: I'll have to remember that important bit of information.

My mother had a discussion about "how babies are made" with my siter when she was in about 3rd grade. After their talk, my mother assured that it wasn't "bad" or "dirty", but that it was private and she needed to not talk about it with the other kids at school, church, etc. My sister thought about it for a minute and said, "Well, I guess I could tell Daddy. He might need to know anyway."

:rotfl2:

Obviously, she had missed a great deal of the information somehow . . .

Honestly, I hope never to have to have "the talk" with any of our kids. Our plan right now is to have sort of an open dialogue from the time they are very little, giving them age appropriate (but honest) information and answers all along the way.

I have 2 DDs 8 and 10, and we have always talked about everyting, so we have never had a need for "the talk", they are confortable asking any questions at any time, I do agree that the American Girl book is excelent and my 10 year old loves reading it....

I spoke with my daughter this year when she turned "10." I'd bought the book "The Care and Keeping of You" from American Girl last fall on someone's recommendation and it was the perfect prop to get the conversation going, as well as a wonderfully written, age-appropriate, and informative book for my daughter to read.

Don't ever lie to your children about sex, either. I remember my mother taking me to her GYN when I was 17 because I had TERRIBLE cramps and bleeding every month. He prescribed BC pills. On the way home, DM said "Now, these are only to control your period, not prevent pregnancy." Yeah, right Mom, they make BC pills that DON'T prevent pregnancy.

Made me wonder what else she had "fibbed" about.
