Mobile Internet in Italy?

Planning an ABD trip for 2013, considering options for mobile internet.

Will have to be local networks, but not sure of options. Any ideas appreciated.

For the Greek ABD trip, free wifi was included at all of our hotels. Some people were receiving emails from work on their phones, but I think they had a global plan through their carrier. I don't remember anyone saying that they had bought a SIM card while in Europe.

There was no free wifi in any of the hotel rooms. Artimino had free wifi in the lobby which reached to some of the rooms.
