Miyuki The Candy Lady

just another thing I wouldn't have known without the DIS! Hopefully we will catch her on our next trip! DH is desperate for a new video camera and this would be a joy to capture on film. :)

I saw on her blog that she made up candy versions of the STS-124 Space Shuttle astronauts in honor of the recent launch:

So glad I read this tonite! We've never seen her and I'm making a point to catch her show next week - can't wait, even if none of my children gets chosen (would be probably better if they didn't since I know it would make someone grumpy if one got picked and the others didn't, just how mine are about some things right now!). I'm so excited about seeing her now - thanks for posting!!!

Since this thread's been bumped back up, I'll add my Miyuki story....

I'd only seen her here on the DIS or in passing, but made a point to get in place early for her show in Dec. My DS5 was in front, waiting patiently about 10 minutes prior to her start. He watched, enraptured, through the entire show, as other children were called upon to name a animal and receive a candy-coated work of art. Never did he complain, whine or in any other way ask to be called upon. I'd explained at the beginning that he might not get a candy, but it was really, really neat to watch. Finally, Miyuki announced that she would make only one more more candy in that show and a sea of hands went up asking to be called on. Miyuki turned to my DS, comended him on being such a good, patient waiter and asked what special creature she could make for him. As it dried, the rest of teh crowd walked away, until it was just us and Miyuki. She took another minute to praise my DS and took a pic with him. She won me over with her sense of fairness and amazing talent - and she reminded my DS that good things can come to those who wait. :goodvibes

PrincessV, what a great story! I'm so glad to see your DS got picked because of his patience and good manners. :goodvibes

Oooooh!!! I am excited to see her now. I think she sounds like a good example of a life lesson both kids and adults need to learn too.......You don't alway get what you want. I say go, watch, enjoy and if you are chosen yay for you, if not don't blast her- she is a person incapable of satisfying everyones desires. Enjoy the art and watching an artist at work!

When we go this year, we really want to take time to visit the street performers' shows, and the Candy Lady is high on our list. But, did someone say the Japan pavilion will be closed in August? Does that mean the restaurants and the street performers won't be there? I'll be so disappointed because I really wanted to watch the shows.

Of all the times we've seen Miyuki, she may be very talented, but she also tends to lean to the rude side. I don't know if it is a culture difference or what, but I've seen her make kids cry. Just a warning for parents of small children or who tend to be on the sensitive side.

The one time we stopped to watch we noticed how rude she was also. I put it down to her possibly having a bad day, but after reading some of these posts I now know better ... she has LOTS of bad days, lol.

PrincessV - I loved your story as well!

And after reading some of these stories, i can see why she would be rude when everyone else seems to be rude to her. As many other people have said - watch her for the art, dont expect to get anything out of it, and I bet you will have a better time. I cannot wait to see her in September!!

Alot of people who deal with pushy whiny people all day get a bit cranky. It's hot in florida I'm sure having rude people most likely verbaly abuse her would make her a bit desensitized and rude back.

I heard there was some kind of "pass" or "note" you could get if you've waited for a while and didn't get a candy to come back on a certain time and day to be picked?

Am I just making things up or is/was this true?

There are 15 candy artist's in Japan. Miyuki is the only woman. I'm not sure if people realize that.

Imagine having this talent and having people push their kids up to you screaming - make them a giraffe!! What would you do??

Luv to watch them make these candies.. DD got one when she was younger! Wow, that has been years now! OK maybe 7...

I must be in the minority, but I thought it was kind of boring. I do think she has an amazing talent, but after watching for a few minutes this month, everyone I was with was bored, so we left. I don't think I would eat the candy either, because she pulls and shapes it and pats it with her hands. I will say though the best tip from the Disboards I got was the Kaki Gori. Mmmm, now that was worth the trip to Japan!

Miyuki was on our "must do" list for our April trip. We got there 25 min. early and waited patiently. I told my girls not to ask or even raise their hand, but to be polite and attentive. First of all, I can say I'd happily watch without getting a creation as it is amazing. I will say though, that I was surprised to see several children picked doing the "full body" hand raise-- kind of like the "oo-oo- pick me" without the noise. Not what I expected. After 4 other children had been chosen using this method. I did tell my DD- 8 to simply raise her hand. She was the second child chosen after that. I guess the subtle technique can be too subtle? Other than that, I found her to be very fair and quite polite. But it WAS the first show of the day. Rudeness would wear on me too if I were in her position. I won't post the picture of our tiger as it isn't as clear as a previous one. It made it through the day safely, even riding on Test Track in my carefully extended hands! Then it broke a foot off when my DD put it on the table in our room!!! But it made it 1400 miles home in our Yukon to sit safely here. Very happy to have watched her show.

My son was only 5 mos old when we took him with us to WDW. My husband was standing with him in a Baby Bjorn watching the candy lady while I took the other 3 kids into get a pearl. When I came out I saw that the Candy Lady had made my son into a candy!:lmao: He was in a baby bjorn and everything, it was SOOOOOO cute!
