My mom just noticed there is a mistake on the ticket she bought for my nephew. When she bought the ticket through priceline, she entered his first name as "West", which is what we all call him. However, the name on his ID is actually "Weston". I tried to call Delta to change it, but they said they couldn't change the name on the ticket, but would note it on the resrvation and in his "Secure Flight" information...whatever that means. Is this a big deal? She's terrified they aren't going to let him on the plane. Any experience with this sort of thing?

It shouldn't be a problem.

How old is he? That matters because anyone under 18 is not required to show ID so what is on his ID would be irrelevant unless it was shown anyway.

Hopefully the previous poster is correct in that it will not be a problem. Since the tickets were booked via Pricleline and if there really is a problem, Priceline and Delta will be pointing the fingers at each other with you stuck in the middle.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the reassurance. He's 20, so he will have to show ID. After looking into it, I told her I thought it would be fine. I definintely appreciate your input! Thanks!

Using a shortened version of your name, such as West versus Weston, Mike versus Michael, Sue versus Susan is fine. There are always warnings that your ticket name will eventually have to exactly match your id, but so far, this hasn't happened.

I'm piling on to agree that it will not be a problem. The TSA agent will realize the 'West' matches, and may ask him a question or two just to see his reaction (ex: That is an interesting name, how do you like it?). This is why there is a person there to filter things in real time.
