Mission Space Question

Hey everyone,

I have a quick question on Mission Space. Last year I chickened out and didn't ride it. I am 40 years old and have had high blood pressure since I was 30. I have it under control with medication, but still would be considered someone with high blood pressure. Can anyone tell me how fast Mission Space actually goes. Last year I went on Test Track and did fine. Rock and Rollercoaster was not that good for me. I felt light headed after that one. I did fine on TOT. No problems there.

My question is is Mission Space faster then Rock and Rollercoaster and if I couldn't handel that would I be able to handle Mission Space. I really want to try it but don't want to end up seeing a doctor that day either. Any advice would be helpful.

I think the thing that got me with the MGM Rollercoaster was that 0 to 60 launch. Does Mission Space do that type of thing. Thanks.

I don't think Misson Space actually goes anywhere. You sit in a flight simulator type thingie (and that may be the technical term), and you "feel" like you are lifting off into space. It starts out as a pressure being felt and then you go to a weightless "feel". It's really cool. It is tight quarters, so someone who is clostophobic isn't going to like it.

As the other responder said, it doesn't really "go" anywhere, but there is the same kind of a feeling... only more intense and it lasts longer. I usually feel a little lightheaded when I get off of it, but it's not unpleasant for me. The first time I rode I also felt a little ill and got a headache after, but I had not followed the directions they give you (repeatedly!) exactly. Each time since then I follow the directions exactly and it's really fun... but intense. I would be concerned about your riding it since you have a reaction to the same type of thing on RNR. If you do decide to try it, just be sure to keep your eyes open, keep your head back and focus on the screen... oh,and be sure to breath that fresh air that blows in your face!

Mission: Space spins you around to simulate gravity. Think of a souped up Gravitron fair ride. Some people notice the spinning, but most don't if you don't close your eyes and you look straight ahead. A number of people do seem to get sick on this ride, but there doesn't seem to be any common indicator as to how you'll do-- some people get sick on the Teacups, Star Tours, and RnRC, but do fine, while some handle everthing else OK and get sick on M:S. Really, the only way you'll know how you'll handle it is to ride it-- but you should definitely follow ALL of Disney's warning & safety messages before you decide to ride-- only you can decide if you should ride it or not.

As for me-- well, I chickened out too on or last trip. I'm trying to psyche myself up to ride it in June. It's the only "thrill ride" at WDW I haven't done yet. We'll see.

Around 17,500 miles per hour ;)
It's a centrifuge, and is essentially a glorifyed form of a state fair Gravitron and I'm guessing it spins around 50mph, if thats right, thats about 10mph less then Rockin' Rollercoaster.

The take off in RnRC did me in too! It seemed to knock the wind out of me but MS was a blast literally! :goodvibes I get motion sickness and I was very worried about trying it but I had no problem.

My in her 20's daughter, who can ride anything, rode MS with me and I had to help her off and sit in the rest area with her until she got her balance back.
:rotfl: Any ride that a parent can do and a child can not, is one incredible ride!

Does anyone know how the long the ride actually takes. How long is that feeling where you get pushed back in your seat and after that does it slow down.

I usually don't get ill on rides, but on Mission Space, I was about 30 seconds away from losing my lunch.

It spins you around. You don't see yourself spinnign around though.

I didn't feel right for an hour or so after I rode it. :crazy2:

Mission Space is just like a Gravitron, except you don't necessarily realize you are spinning. The first time I did it, I had no idea I was spinning until I got off and I was nauseous. (Gone are the days when I could do spinning rides without any effect) I would think it needs to be spinning pretty fast to get the centrifugal force to make you feel the "G forces," so if you have a problem with fast rides, I'd skip this one.

Thanks for the link madison66 but the one you are showing does not include a clip of Mission Space. :guilty: It does have some other great clips! :teeth:

The third link down is to the old attraction in Magic Kingdom that was replaced by first Alien Encounter and now the Stitch thing!

I could not find a link to a Mission Space attraction that is in Epcot.

Thanks for trying though! :flower:

I also have high blood pressure and have it under control with meds.....And I did not do so bad on Mission Space. I did feel like I was going to pass out in the beginning of the ride but just as I thought I can not take this anymore it stopped and we went into glide mode. I think I had more issues with the claustrophobic stuff. But that being said I had no problems at all with RNR. I loved that one and think they are two totally different sensations. MS is just like the gravitron, but way better. If you can handle that you should be ok.

Okay, I am thinking of skipping Mission Space. I love roller coaster..the more upside down the better. But any type of spinning...even really fast spinning tea cups(snow balls at Santa's village) makes me fee ill. I am I being crazy or is this probably the type of feeling.

Second, my 7 year wants to go on it. He loves fast and spinning rides...what do kids ...do they toerate it.

Mary :cheer2:

Rode it 3 weeks ago with my 4 yr old son (he's better at the spinning rides than his momma). He was a bit nervous, but wanted to do it. We were the only 2 in our capsule, so I talked him through most of it. He got pretty upset at one point- but it was only because he couldn't reach the joystick to control the ship :earsboy: I pulled it towards him so he could rech it, and made sure I kept telling him to look straight ahead and to keep his head back, etc. Make sure you follow the instuctions, too. I kept looking over at him to make sure he was okay, and after about 5 times, it did get a bit disorienting, but better once I looked ahead.

We both loved it, and high-fived the whole way out. My wife couldn't believe he actually went through the whole thing.

We rode it twice during previews in 2003 (it hadn't really opened to the public yet). My Dad rode with us the first time and he's had several angioplasties and a triple bi-pass. He had no ill effects, loved the ride, and was on it with us for the second ride as well. That second ride, BTW followed a beer-sampling trip around the World Showcase. Anyway, when I got home and back on the Dis, I was really surprised at all the people who'd had problems. Both times that I rode I looked over at my son, wife and father multiple times with no ill effects -- it think it really varies from person to person ... just my 2 cents.

One thing of note that no one has mentioned yet:

You pull MORE G forces in the take off on RnR than you do on Mission:Space. The difference is that Mission:Space will give you prolonged G's. So if it's the G's that bothered you, Mission:Space might not be for you.

I have to admit, I'm 25 years old w/ no health problems that would be influenced by G's and I went on Mission:Space. The first time I did a lot of glancing around and at a take off, my vision got all "tunnel" like, but it ended when I just focused on looking forward and keeping my head back. I LOVED the ride.

IMHO, it's an incredable ride and everyone, even if they don't like spinning rides, should try it at LEAST once. And follow the warning signs. There are 32 of them, so they are hard to miss. Keep your head back, eyes forward, and if you start to feel sick, do yourself a favor and DON'T close them. I know people who have gotten motion sickness from carosels and tea cups, but do just fine on Mission:Space. I've also heard it mentioned that if your blood sugar is too low, you could have some problems, so eat light before getting on the ride, or have a mint in your mouth to help you out (I'd be afraid of choking, but that's what the astronauts who have been on it suggested).

One more favor you can do yourself is THINK POSITIVE! :) Don't psyche yourself out. The mind is a powerful thing and you can "think" yourself sick. :) Just keep telling yourself you'll be fine and odds are you'll make it off without losing your lunch.

IMHO, if you can handle RnR, you can do Mission:Space. :)
Have fun! :earsboy:

Weird - Im watching the 3rd choice right now...Its Mission Space..

Okay I am confused here! Can some else go figure this out! I followed the link: http://www.the-shermans.us/disney/
and the third one down is listed in Magic Kingdom and it is the old attraction of Mission to Mars. Mission Space is in Epcot so if I go to the Epcot listing the third one down is Journey Into Imagination .

Where on the link provided are you finding a video and preshow of Mission Space in Epcot?

:confused3

Okay I just watched it again and that third video clip on the above listed link is NOT Mission Space. Right after the preshow you can even see people walking into the theater of the old Mission to Mars that is now Stitch!

Can some one in the know please confirm this. :rotfl:
