Mission Space: My Rant

Oh! What to do, what to do!!! I don't like "spinny" rides (a la teacups) and am not too crazy about Star Tours/Body Wars either. But I'd HATE to miss out on a good ride (LOVE TOT!). Maybe I'll take some Dramamine and chance it, I have time to ponder.....

We rode MS just a few days ago and loved it! The theming was great before you enter the ride. They do repeat warnings ahead of time if you are sensitive to dark, enclosed spaces, simulators, spinning, etc....and do offer you a "mission control" job (the chicken door :D ) if you don't think you can handle it. The instructions beforehand are very clear about how to hold your head straight and against the back of the seat and not to turn your head. My DH is very sensitive to spinning but gave it a whirl (lol) anyway. He found it was better for him to have eaten a few hours before and not ride it on a completely empty stomach ( we skipped breakfast the first time and went straight for the ride which made him a little queasy). I was looking to see if anyone coming off the ride around us looked ill and it appeared everyone really enjoyed it and I didn't notice anyone other than my DH having any ill effects from it. Like I said, we rode it twice and it was my favorite ride at Disney. It was my DH's favorite, too! Don't let other people scare you off of this one. You'll really miss out.

Ok you can't complain if you have never ridden mission space. Sounds like you are afraid to try it? I rode it August 25 with my 8 year old daughter and husband. We all loved it. Yes I felt a little quesy but not enough to throw up. Just make sure you don't wolf down a whole breakfast buffet right before riding it. But that is just common sense with any fast ride. I feel that quesy feeling in the first drop on rock'n roller coaster too, but I don't complain. That is a great ride too. Contrary to your statement, I was not sick the remainder of the day. I just took some time to sit and sip a soda and eat something and I felt fine. I will agree you won't want to jump on another ride right away but it left me dreaming about it at night. Now that is a great ride!

Mission space is on a whole other level! It made me appreciate what the actual astronauts go through. They must have cast iron wills and stomachs. Best ride I have ever been on in my life. You really felt like it was a space capsule. You felt and saw takeoff, flight, weightlessness, etc. I especially loved guiding it through the astroids and crashing on Mars.

Make sure you blast off on it on your next trip. It is well worth it. Cool stuff for sale in the gift shop and the games section after the ride.

Oh I so want to ride this. I am the queen of motion sickness but find with my patch I can ride just about anything although I still am to scared to do teacups as spinning is my worst.
I'm kind of claustrophobic though and worse as I get older. What a baby!!! So......how restrictive is this? A shoulder harness? and dark? How long do you sit in there until you get going? How long does it last?
I figure I may be able to use this information to psych myself up.
It doesn't suprise me that those sitting in the after area are sick. That's what I would do. They are the ones that stop I would think. The ones that aren't sick keep on going!!

I'm like you, but I'm leaning (strongly) towards trying it. I'll take my Dramamine and hope for the best!!

Ok wld, just try it. You are not going to die on this ride. It is just a ride that lasts about 2 minutes. It is a centrifuge though so you spin but you never know it. Those imagineers are pretty clever. It is small and a harness goes over your shoulders just like in Alien Encounter. You can't really move too much except for your arms. It is bright and dark in the capsule. You go into hypersleep for about 3 seconds. You have a tv screen in front of you and above your head and lots of flashing lights and buttons in front of you. Also there is a joystick you use to fly with. Everybody was cheering and laughing in my pod so use that as a judge.

It is really great, something to say that you did and you will understand how brave those astronauts are. Besides you get to see the real lunar rover on loan from the smithsonian in the wait area.

p.s. I didn't see anyone hurl in the walkway after the ride. I just saw lots of big smiling faces and people who were running to go back on it again. We had a woman repeat with us. She loved it and was about 50.

So take the patch, hop on the ride and do exactly what they tell you about keeping your head back and eyes forward. You will not feel sick if you do this. They warn you several times. But the building is fantastic, wait area was soso, but the games area afterward had so much stuff I couldn't take it all in.

My 10 year old rode it today alone since I was toooo chicken to try it.

He said it was really cool!!

I'm prone to motion sickness on rides that spin, but can do roller coasters with no problem. I took motion sickness medication about 30 minutes before getting on MS, stared straight ahead the entire time and kept my head back against the seat, but got sick anyway. The ride was really cool and I figured that even if I got sick, when would I ever get the opportunity to ride something that is supposed to be as close to feeling like you are going into space as you can get. I know I'll never go in space, so the trade off was worth it for me...but I won't do it again. I was the only person I saw that was ill getting off the ride and luckily they have benches in the hallway as soon as you exit and water fountains. A CM working the ride told me to stare at an immobile object for a few minutes and drink water and that helped a little. She told me that she hadn't seen many people getting sick on the ride, majority of people were fine. I was probably sick for two hours, but felt worse because little kids were hopping off the ride smiling and fine.

I had reservations about riding M:S, although I have not been sick from any other ride.
I was glad it was over when it was, but didn't suffer any ill effects form it. No headaches, upset stomach or anything. We went right over to Nine Dragons afterwards for dinner. :)
When we were exiting there were a few kids (not yet teens, and not little either) who were running to an exit. But I don't think it was because of being sick. It was just the kind of run you see many kids break out in from excess energy.
These same kids, stopped short when they started to run and complained of being dizzy. They sat on the bench, at a CM's urging. But the kids just seemed too antsy to sit still was all. (Acted hyper and were running ahead out of their parent's view anyway.)
I think just moving so suddenly and fast after getting off the ride affected them. But they didn't act sick in anyway.I was almost expecting people to be sick. But never saw anything like that. Just the opposite. Everyone seemed excited when they got off.
Just like ToT and RnRC, I think people sometimes work themselves up.
And rides effect everyone different. One of my sisters rides the teacups and CA Screamin', but can't handle drops like ToT and Mailboomer.

I will warn that anyone claustrophobic in the least should not go on this ride.
I am not claustrophobic, but I was very surprised at how close that screen moved in to me.
It really reminded me of when I had my enclosed MRI, except M:S was dark, and the MRI was white.
ANyone claustrophobic should take a tranquilizer before going on M:S or just take the chicken route.

DH and I wondered how many people were figuring that the huge spinning wheel in the que area is similar to what they would be riding.

That huge spinning wheel in the lobby of MS was a prop from the movie Mission to Mars. The guy that talks to you about your "missio" was the star in that movie. I can't think of his name right now but he is a famous star. No coincidence there. I think the wheel was lame. I was so bored watching it go around. I thought the lobby would have been a little more "cooler" with more space junk in it, like moon rocks, more astronaut pictures that you could actually see if you didn't have a fast pass. I liked the lunar rover. You would think being so close to Cape Canaveral, Nasa would have loaned a few more things to the ride. I think maybe some actual footage of rockets launched and space walks etc to watch before you go in would have been more entertaining than that wheel turning around.

Did anyone else think that lobby was lame? All the hype and it really was disappointing there.

I have to admit that my enjoyment was affected by the fact that I might get sick. I made sure to follow the directions and not lean forward or look to the side. I'm not normally affected by rides, I was just a little paranoid.

My FIL felt sick after riding M:S. I was fine until I went to bed and then the room felt like it was spinning. I don't know if this is an after-effect or not; it was certainly an odd experience.

Didn't see anyone getting sick after the ride.....although we did see a pile of "sick" when getting off Test Track. Yuck!

Also, a cast member informed us that the ride used to be 2gs but then they slowed it down to 1g because people were getting sick...

Nevertheless, I loved it.

I'm more worried about the closeness of the screen than the spinning. I hate to be boxed in.

As for trying it before saying anything bad about the ride, in the past I've seen several posters saying that a person who is prone to motion sickness should pay attention to the warnings and perhaps not ride. Once you've ridden it and have gotten sick, it's a little late to avoid the problem. It's just hard to decide.

My DW and 77 yo FIL rode Mission Space on Sunday and they both had a great time "flying". My Dw said it was "cool" when she called me after she got off. She had no problems and she is prone to car sickness if she reads in the car and will get ill on tea cups.

DRAMAMINE! or some kind of patch. We have several members of the family who really WANT to ride this ride but don't handle things too well so we are all going to try and do something about it ahead of time. We'll see if it works! I am one of those people who can stress myself out just THINKING about a certain ride so I can imagine how some people feel. Whatever your decision, I'm sure it's the right one for YOU!

The guy that talks to you about your "mission" was the star in that movie. I can't think of his name right now but he is a famous star.

His name is Gary Sinese, and is probably best known for his portrayal of Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump.

I agree with you. We were at Disney for the first time in Sept. We were only there 5 days and my husband spent one whole day sick after riding MS and he said he "felt it" a few days after still. I wish we had passed on it and it would have made Epcot a lot more fun for us.

Hi everyone,

I rode mission space back in August and it is a great ride, just one that I don't really want to ride again. I love RnR and a couple of years ago rode ToT 21 times consecutively. Mission Space really made me quezzy (sp). I didn't get sick or see anyone else sick.

If anyone decides not to ride, you need to go through the gift shop and into the final staging area. There are alot of neat things in there.

Have a great Disney day.:p
