Mission Space: Is it REALLY that bad?

Regarding the Green version- is it similar to Star tours? I don't mind that.

I don't care for ToT...the funny tummy feeling didn't bug me though. And I love BTMRR.

I'm not going on it because 2 ppl in the past have gotten off of it and dropped dead. Turned out they had underlying heart conditions that they didn't know they had. But imagine how many ppl out there may have a heart condition and not know it?!? No ride is worth dying over. I'm not going to encourage my kids to go on it either.

I believe your view might be a bit extreme. Yes, it's tragic that two people died, but I'm sure tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people have been on the ride, and those two people maybe shouldn't have been riding thrill rides in the first place.

I've been on Mission Space-Orange several times--and I have a heart condition. I absolutely encourage people to pay attention to the warnings and avoid rides if they think they should, but sometimes I think the warnings can be a bit over the top. I've never had a problem with any thrill ride (ToT is my favorite ride at WDW), so I certainly jumped at the chance to try Mission Space. I've never had any problems, and have never even tried the "tame" side.

As long you enjoy thrill rides--try it! It's a great ride! :thumbsup2

We were there a few weeks ago, my father in law rode it...(I was gone) and he actually got sick and had to go back to the resort to recoup! I AM SO RIDING IT NEXT TIME!

So, the only ride I haven't done at the world (well, the rides that were there as of my last trip in 2008) is Mission Space. For some reason, we missed it back in 2008 but after hearing the horror stories, I don't know if I'm actually that keen now!

Here's my dilemma...

I have a serious phobia about sickness. I'm not so concerned about being sick myself, because I don't tend to get ill and I usually take motion sickness pills just in case (I'm a bit of an "in case" type person) but I'm terrified that someone else will throw up and I'll go into full scale panic mode!:scared1:

So here is my question...

Is it really that bad? Do a lot of people get sick?

I'd love to hear people's experience on both sides because DW and I are now debating it!

I have riden both the orange and the green versions of MS and I can only handle the green version. I tend to get a little woozy in motion simulator rides or anything that spins really fast (can't do the Teacups) and after riding the orange side once I was done for the rest of the day. It made me nauseous, gave me a massive headache and I felt ill the rest of the day. I can ride the green side over and over and it doesn't bother me. If you are in anyway clausterphobic either side will bother you but as far as not wanting to get sick while riding it - stick to the green side.

My DH and I rode Mission Space when it first opened. It didn't bother me at all but my DH was pale and broke out into a cold sweat. It made him feel weird for the next 24 hours. He swore he would never ride it again. We now ride the green side every time we are in Epcot and it doesn't effect him.

Thank you all for your replies. It's a tough decision..:confused3

I don't typically get motion sickness myself (only get nauseous on EE during the backward section) but other than that I'm fine. Only twice have I felt unwell, the EE and Kumba at Busch Gardens. It's not so much about me it's about other people.

I don't especially "enjoy" thrill rides, I just don't like to be beaten by anything and so I do every ride at least once.

My sister, who gets motion sickness from the merry-go-round, went on the mild version of the ride and said she had no sickness afterwards. XD So, I think you would be ok on that one. I'm not sure about the "intense" version, though.

We rode the orange side long ago, and did not like it. Once they created the scaled down version (green side) we've ridden it again and it's just OK.We only ride it now when we're visiting WDW with guests who want to ride it. While I have never actually seen anyone getting sick on the ride, I will say that to me, the inside of the ride smells "off". Don't know if it's just because it's an enclosed space, or what...but don't care for the way it smells in there.:confused3

Have been there with a couple of people who are prone to motion sickness...neither would try the green side, even after taking motion sickness pills: both had read about the ride and said they thought even the green side would be too much to risk it.

My adult daughter, who loves thrill rides & roller coasters of all shapes & sizes , would not take my word for the bad effects of the Orange side. She & friend rode the orange side and seriously regretted it. She ended up with near-migraine headache and she & friend were queasy-stomach for hours afterward...kind of wrecked the rest of the day for both of them.

If you have any indication you may have motion sickness, don't bother with this ride. It's not that great of a ride, anyway...the special effects, storyline & movie part were state of the art 20+ years ago but are dated now.

With orange you HAVE to follow their guidelines. Looking anywhere other than the screen, even a glance, or moving your head forward or closing your eyes can get the best of us. I never usually have a problem but I yawned during the ride (tired not bored lol) and then I got disoriented and had a headache for for a few hours. I've been on it many times and that was the only time it got me. That said, if you've never down orange it is quite the experience and if you're healthy I'd definitely try it and if you get nauseous, there's always green team...

My husband also gets sick on merry-go-rounds. But he can ride the orange side with no problem.

I'm not prone to motion sickness, but sometimes I shy away from really intense rides. When DH and I went, I was really nervous about it so we rode the green version first. When we got off I was like, 'Was that it?! That was NOTHING!' So we rode the orange...3-4 times. I enjoyed it that much. I even looked around a few times just to break the rules. :woohoo: DH actually gets bored with that ride now b/c it's not intense enough for him. The scariest part of the entire ride is the video beforehand with Gary Sinise...damn you Sinise! I've seen too many children and elderly people get scared and walk away after watching the video.

I suppose it depends how easily you get motion sickness. Ride the green first...the only way you won't enjoy the green is if you get motion sickness VERY easily. Good luck!

Okay - only ridden GREEN - and I got terribly ill from it. Ruined the rest of my day. I was not well until the next day. I was dying to get out of the car - panicky, sweats, nauseous, and fighting not vomiting. Closing my eyes and not watching the screen helped - as the simulator does not move that much on GREEN. I do get motion sick very easily compared to the norm. (I am not normally claustrophobic.)

That said - I doubt few people ever actually get ill (vomit) while ON the ride. Most folks can likely make it to the end.

So - if you are afraid of someone vomiting while on the ride - I think that chance is pretty darn slim.

Are there folks who feel awful afterwards? Yep.

Despite ruining the rest of my day - I am glad I did it once. But never again. If you are nervous about how you will react - I'd put it at the end of the day.

I am a big chicken when it comes to thrills rides. I won't do ToT, RnR, or EE...well, maybe EE the next time we go. But I love Mission:Space, the intense orange version! Go figure. I don't do "drops" well, but this won't give you that feeling. I get motion sickness, but not too easily. As long as I kept my eyes on the screen, my brain was able to perceive the motion as moving forward instead of spinning. I was actually more concerned about being claustrophobic over getting motion sickness, but even that wasn't as bad as I feared. I guess you never know until you try it.

I don't get motion sickness easy, have no problem on boats or with small spaces. I cannot take the G-Force pressure on the orange ticket version of this ride. I would advise the green ticket.

OP, you're going to get a concentrated amount of people here that say it makes them sick; obviously if the ratio of sick:not sick people on this thread were the same in real life, they wouldn't keep the ride open because they don't want to drive people out of the park and back to their rooms to recover!

That said, I love MS:Orange, it's one of my favorite rides in all of WDW. Smaller airplanes and reading in the car makes me a little sick, MS makes me an eensy bit woozy but not enough to ruin my day.

I have been on both the green and orange sides. I am not too into space things to begin with so the ride really didn't interest me. I went on both sides because my DH wanted to. Plus, it is Disney and I will try anything atleast once lol.

The green isn't bad, the only thing I didn't care for was the tight space. I am not claustrophobic but it did make me a little uncomfortable. All in all its not my favorite ride but I would definitely do it again.

Now, the orange side is a different story. I hated the orange side, as soon as the ride started I couldn't wait for it to stop. I am not one to get motion sickness but that ride got to me. It didn't make me "get sick" but I was very lightheaded, had a funny stomach, and was very disoriented after I got off the ride. I sat down in the play area after getting off the ride and drank water. I felt a little better but still weird, I actually ended up going back to our room and laying down for a while. Maybe I should of taken motion sickness pills, nothing else bothers me so I didn't think I needed them. I don't know if it was a fluke, maybe I didn't have enough water or food or something but that was not a fun experience. I can say I will not be riding the orange side again .

My advice would be start with the green side. If you enjoy it and I want to try the orange side, then go for it....if not, atleast you can say you went on it.

I'm not going on it because 2 ppl in the past have gotten off of it and dropped dead. Turned out they had underlying heart conditions that they didn't know they had.
People with undetected heart conditions have dropped dead at the water parks too, but as a heart attack survivor I don't fret about going to Blizzard Beach or riding M:S Orange.

I will also add that I'm someone that doesn't handle spinning well. Merry-go-rounds can be "unsettling" for me and if you put me on the Tea Cups I'll be sicker than a dog for the rest of the day... but I'm fine with M:S. I've ridden it many times and only time I every felt the least bit queasy was when I rode it back-to-back. Even then all I needed was a few minutes to sit on a bench and I was fine.

I went on the Green version on my last trip (I was too afraid to try the Orange side - didn't want one ride ruining the rest of my day). And honestly, it really was nothing that exciting. I really didn't like the ride, not because of sickness but because how boring it was. It was sitting in a claustrophobic capsule pushing a couple buttons and watching a screen - definitely not worth my time on any future trips.

Oh and as for sickness, honestly I did feel kinda sick at the beginning but I have a feeling it was just my nerves/hearing too many stories of people being sick (and I'm a total thrill ride junkie)

Mission:Space is my favorite attraction so I've been on both sides many times. I have never seen anyone get sick. I've never even seen anyone look ill after riding it. I've never even seen any indication in the ride at all that anyone has ever gotten sick. Apart from the sickness bags in the capsule and Gary Sinise and the Lieutenant telling you time and time again that you might feel ill, I wouldn't even think about people getting sick.
