Mini-sunpass question

I started to purchase this online but see where they will ask me for vehicle type (possibly even license plate). I will be using this in any rentals I may have ...

Does anyone have a suggestion or insight as to how to purchase this if I have no idea what vehicle or license plate it will have.

Thanks

I use a Sunpass for rental cars but I did not get the mini because it is advertised as a one-car use only. I got the portable transponder which can be moved from car to car. When I bought the transponder I just put in my vehicle data for the car I drive at home.

From the sunpass website: "SunPass Mini cannot be hand-held or moved from car to car. It must be permanently mounted to the windshield or it won’t work, because the windshield acts as an antenna. Once removed, the Mini will no longer functionand cannot be reattached to the windshield."

I use a sun pass for rentals but also Dont use a mini. I use one with suction cups that can be moved from car to car. Offically, you are supposed to update which car it is on the website. I do this most of the time... but for a rental.. maybe not all the time.:hippie:

The SunPass mini must be permanently affixed to the vehicle's windshield for it to work. Thus, it is not practical for use in rental cars. The price is great but that is the major limitation. If you want one to carry with you for use in ever-changing vehicles, you need the full-size regular SunPass transponder.

Oh :(. I had read I believe here on the Dis that you COULD use the mini if you taped it to the windshield......then just removed it with the tape and it could be used again....not sure I want to invest $25 for something that I am not going to use very often.

Not sure but almost positive it wont work that way. Plus it would cost more than $25 as you must put funds on the transponder after you purchase it.

Not sure if that would work or not. I have my doubts. But perhaps. For the full priced portable, if you come to Florida at least once per year, it can be helpful in avoiding the lines at toll plazas. The money you have in the account does not expire. And it's good throughout Florida, from toll bridges in the Florida panhandle to the toll roads in extreme south Florida. And of course on all of Orlando's toll roads marked with the SunPass or E-PASS logos.

I dont foresee coming to Florida once a year....at least not for awhile. I guess I need to figure out how many tolls there are (and if there are actual tollbooths to take my cash) between West Palm and Disney.

I also just signed up for the transponder that can move from car to car. What do I need to do when I get a rental car????

You might want to look into this option. Are there really that many tolls to make this worthwhile? I live in FL but haven't driven that route as of yet.

(From the Sunpass website)

Q. What if I’m driving a rental car and missed a toll?

A: Most major rental car companies now offer their customers the option of including tolls with the credit card used to rent the vehicle. These rental car customers can use Florida's toll roads and not worry about carrying cash or stopping to pay for tolls. Using license plate recognition systems allows rental car customers to use the Express, SunPass ONLY, EPASS ONLY and LeeWay ONLY lanes to bypass congestion and traffic; identifying rental vehicles by the license plate and using that information to electronically collect the toll(s). These car rental companies have registered their fleets' license plates through third party vendors so their renters' tolls will be applied to the rental agreement.

Rental agencies or their associated third party vendors will assess the fees agreed to in your rental agreement to collect the toll(s). For more information on specific rental car programs, please contact your local rental car agency as each agency has separate programs and fees associated with electronic toll usage. Some rental car companies offer a TOLL by PLATE option. You go through toll plazas in the transponder lane and if you don't have a transponder, then the toll authority takes a photo of the rental car's tag (license plate) and bills the rental car company which then bills you. If you have a transponder of your own, then it pays the toll and no photo gets taken and the rental car company does not bill you.

Other rental car companies actually have mounted a transponder onto the windshield, in a little metal box. If you plan to use their transponder, you slide open the door on that box so that the toll equipment senses that transponder and bills it and the rental company bills you. If you have your own transponder, keep the door on that little box closed and make sure the transponder you own is held up on the windshield as you pass through tolls.

In all cases, you use the lanes marked SunPass (or E-PASS in Orange County) and not the cash lanes.

Make sure your account is loaded with funds; I recommend you tie your account to a credit card so that it is automatically replenished if your balance falls below $10. Also, it is recommended that you phone SunPass and give them your rental car information. However, if you forget to or unable to (such as a night arrival) you can still use your transponder because the toll plaza will sense your transponder and bill it regardless of what vehicle it is in.

I don't foresee coming to Florida once a year....at least not for awhile. I guess I need to figure out how many tolls there are (and if there are actual tollbooths to take my cash) between West Palm and Disney.

The West Palm Beach area is within a section of Florida's Turnpike which is known as a "closed-system". You obtain a ticket when you get on the Turnpike and you turn-in the ticket and pay when you leave the Turnpike. The "closed" area ends just south of Kissimmee. Thus, if you're a cash-payer, you'll get a ticket when you get on at WPB and when you reach the end of the closed area near Kissimmee, you'll come to a toll plaza where you stop, turn in that ticket and then pay the incurred toll. From there northward you're in an open-system are where tolls are paid at exit and entrance ramps. However, the toll you paid back at Kissimmee includes some future miles and assuming that you're going to leave the Turnpike at either the Beachline Expressway (SR 528) or at the I-4 exit, there are no more tolls. Thus, one toll plaza to get a ticket and one to pay; that's it. The toll though is around $13.

For those with a SunPass, you use the SunPass only lane when you get on and off and don't get a ticket. It knows where you got on and knows where you exited and bills your account accordingly. You also save around $3 on the toll.
