Mingos in the Watah! What in the Wuhld?

Checking in quickly before another crazy school day, but at least it is FRIDAY! :cool1: School is more time-consuming than ever. Most of the teachers who have been there for years and years and years are walking around feeling like first year teachers with all of the new paperwork. The lesson plans that we have to provide for the first observation - the ones who have done theirs already are saying it takes about four hours! Of course, we know that all of these codes (R2.1.4, L2.1.3) and all of these elaborate plans are going to bring drastic increases in reading levels and drastic decreases in behavior issues and glowing reviews for test scores that will be published in the newspaper.

Or not. :sad2:

Our assistant principal said yesterday after joining us in our team meeting (the third of the week, as it now is taking us three planning times to finish our group plans with all the details) that there are about a thousand administrators ready to walk out because of all the pressure.

It's a pretty depressing situation. We've had a few teachers in tears. Not me, so far. ;)

Open House was last night, too, so after exhausting, overwhelming days, we got to stay until 8:15. I was glad to get to talk to some parents. All of them seemed very happy with the year so far. One mom said her little girl said, "We work all the time!" I laughed and told her she was right. There is rarely a down moment. We have some pretty big 'whips' going, unfortunately. I think we're doing a decent job of making kids hate school.

But, even in the midst of the junk, there are some fun and exciting things going on. One of my little boys who can barely read and who spends a lot of time sucking his thumb did a very nice job taking notes, with some guidance, on common nouns and proper nouns yesterday. After we made just a few changes, I put his paper out in the hall on the diplay wall. I have not really been able to put up anything of his yet, because most of what he has done has been a mess, but this was nice. He happily accompanied me to the wall to hang it up. I have to tell you, I wanted to give him a hug, but I don't hug at school. In our district, it is discouraged. A pat on the shoulder and a smile made him happy enough. :goodvibes As our assistant principal was leaving our team meeting yesterday, I showed her his paper and told her to mention it to him when she saw him. She said he was a frequent flyer in the office last year. This year, he has not been in the office from the classroom at all, but he is having troubles on the bus and at the bus stop for fighting. There is very little going on at home except just existing. He is one you can just pinpoint to be a drop-out someday, and you wish you could stop it from happening.

Also, we are doing something fun for our head custodian - a wee little bit of a man who does three hours' worth of work in one. He will do anything for anybody any time. He is older, but he and his wife adopted the twin girls of one of his nieces when she could not take care of them. He has a crown full of stars in heaven, I assure you. Anyway, he never takes a day off unless he has to, but they are making him use vacation time next week. Our principal is rounding up a vacation fund to send them to somewhere like Gatlinburg or to Chattanooga to go to the aquarium or to the Memphis Zoo or somewhere. I have put together some travel bags for the two little girls to add to that money. I got Minnie Mouse pajamas, Disney baby dolls (Ariel and Belle), coloring books and crayons, sticker books, Nemo fruit snacks, apple juice boxes, animal crackers, and goldfish. It is all tucked nicely away in a huge Disney Princess bag. :thumbsup2 The administrators are calling him in this afternoon to give him the gifts. The whole staff is excited about being able to do something for this humble and wonderful man. :)

We look for the bright moments in what has become a very depressing situation in our school district, and those are two of my bright moments this week. Trent works at a place where he sees Metro teachers, as well, and he said they are all moaning about the new stuff and all of the hours it is taking.

To tell you how bad it has been, I felt Disney trip tired last night when I went to bed, and I slept until my alarm went off this morning at 4:00! My alarm rarely goes off. Very rarely.

I am going to Alabama tomorrow morning to see my big girl play soccer. That will sure bring me some happiness!

On Sunday, Jill told Brooklynn about her October trip. She is excited, and now that she has processed how it is all going to go down, she is 'tormenting' Bella with the information.
Bella is not cool with the fact that she is not going to Dizhy Wuhld this time, so we keep telling her she is going on Santa Claus day.
Santa Claus in the morning - Dizhy Wuhld in the evening.
Not a bad day. :santa:

I will try to put up more trip pictures tonight, if I live through today. Have a Fantastic Friday, friends!

Wow MeMom it sounds like you have been working very hard. I hope things improve at work with all the hard work & hours you are all putting in.

Aw it sounds like that little boy in your class is improving with his classwork. So sad about the other behavior. I think I would get so attached to those kids.

What a great idea about the custodian. What a nice thing that all of you are doing for him. I hope he has a wonderful time with his family. With all that you are doing for him I am sure he will be thrilled!!.:goodvibes

I hope you have a wonderful & deserved weekend!! Enjoy watching Brooklynn play soccer. It goes so fast. I cannot believe it is Cody's last year in HS. He has a game tonight & my sister is coming & spending the night. She will get to see his game. Then we will go visit my dad tomorrow.

I'm sorry school has been so taxing for you this year. It really seems crazy to make you jump through all those hoops. I have two teachers in my family, so I know that things aren't great everywhere. Thank you for continuing to do what you do, and I doubt that there are many people in today's environment that teach with the care and grace that you do.

I hope that your school custodian has a wonderful vacation. It was so nice of you and the other staff to chip in to make his time off of work special. I'm sure those little girls really appreciate it too!

As for MNSSHP- I love watching the parade from Liberty Square, and it is a really dorky reason, but other Disney fans might appreciate it. My favorite part of the parade is the headless horseman, and to see him coming down the perfectly themed streets of Liberty Square, almost makes me feel like I'm in the movie. The setting is perfect, and you really feel like you are in Sleepy Hollow, and that Ichabod Crane is just around the corner.

why yes, if only someone had given you codes and more paperwork earlier...you would have been a much better teacher all those years ago!! :sad2:

What a nice story of your student with a sad future. In my job, all those kids end up with me. somedays I have to remind myself they are not the average or I would never be able to enroll my kids in our district! We have a new bd teacher this year who is a very experience man. He commented to my husband this week that he has never been in a district that seems to concentrate so much of our focus on the lowest percent as ours. That isn't necessarily the worst thing but when it comes at the expense of ignoring the highest quadrant, it's kind of sad really (especially since I have one in that group)

You also got me teary with the story of your custodian. What a special man and a wonderful gift you guys are doing for him!!

Your post is one of the main reasons my DD is in private school. I want her education to be as fun as possible, not boot camp. I hated having to be that way with my students and I knew I didn't want that for her. I never could do anything fun or creative with my students because there just wasn't time with all the testing pressure and most of the kids couldn't handle it anyway. It's a very sad state we are in and I wonder how long it can go on like this.

Yay for the small victory of your little student. It warms your heart when kids like that have successes no matter how small! And I wasn't a hugger either. Again, it's a sad day when you can't hug a kid, but that's where we are. :sad2:

Loved the story about your janitor. I would have totally been in on that! Stuff like that gives me the warm fuzzies! Work ethic like that is becoming harder and harder to find. I hope they have a wonderful time on their trip! :wizard:

I hope you have a great weekend with your girls. Sounds like you need a big mental break like that! Do you have a countdown calendar going for October? It isn't that far away now! :yay: Speaking of... you really need a ticker Memom. It would make your DIS time even brighter to see the time ticking away!

Oh Caren, sounds like some serious headaches and pressure to have to deal with along with wanting to do what is best for your kids!! I feel your pain!!

Our motto this year is 211 degrees to 212 degrees it's the extra degree that matters...well as a science teacher I can tell you that while extra energy can get water to boil, so can REDUCING the pressure. I wish you all the best with your classroom this year.

What a great story about that little boy! I bet he was thrilled to see his work on the board and hopefully his improvement will continue!! He has found a friend in you for sure!!

YAY for Brooklynn knowing, but poor Bella...hopefully she will have much fun looking forward to Disney and Santa Claus!!

Liberty Square it is! I love that period in history and always enjoyed watching Spectro there so I think I will try to watch this parade there as well!

How awesome for Brooklyn to have a special trip with her MeMom. My grandma came with us to Disney World on our first visit when I was 5. We were buddies and it is a special memory I will always have. . . here holding my hand while climbing up the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse:lovestruc

well, all I can do is offer this - I hope it gets better and it's good to find those little bright spots! That little boy is so lucky to have you as a teacher. I hope someday, when he graduates, he thinks of you!

How cool to do that for the custodian. What a nice man, and a wonderful gift.

Brooklynn and MeMom are counting down!! I'll bet she's going crazy!! Poor Bella. I know if it were my DDs, they would be behaving the same way. I've often wished I could do a mother daughter trip - with each one on their own, but it would be so hard on the one left behind. And my DH too!!

I LOVE this Jen!!!

We look for the bright moments in what has become a very depressing situation in our school district, and those are two of my bright moments this week.

I think so many of us feel that way right now with the education world in the mess it is in. We just have to remember and hold tight to those bright moments. After all, it is for moments like helping that little boy hang up his work, that we are teachers. Unfortunately, there is too much "other stuff" for us to have to get through every day. :sad2:

Have a great time watching Brooklyn play soccer this weekend. :goodvibes

Just popping in to let you know that I am still here and doing my best to keep up. I have enjoyed peeking in most mornings and getting a bit of Disney joy, so thank you for that.:goodvibes In the evenings, I am too busy filling out forms and trying to get stuff together to post...which leads me to say that I totally feel your pain on all of the school stuff. We have teachers that are actively looking for other jobs and are planning on resigning.:sad2:

My little group of friends this year are very low so I know I will be looking for small things like you found with your little guy. Unfortunately, the clipboard people will be looking for bigger things that just aren't going to happen no matter how many pre-assessments I give and how much I differentiate and how many content chunks I have in my lesson plans (with corresponding codes). Goodness, it is so frustrating.

I will say that I still hug though. Probably will get me one day but I just do it anyways. Many years ago my district discouraged it and harped on it for a few years but they've backed off here recently. I get it in the older grades but they are forced to grow up so fast, and for so many of my little ones it is quite possibly the only hug they'll get that day so I do it.

Enough rambling for me! I keep forgetting to take pictures of my classroom. I went with a general under the sea theme with just a few Disney touches-nothing awesome like yours and Anita's. I have to take the camera to school for blog pictures so hopefully I will get them next week.

Have a great time in Alabama!!

Great that the custodian was able to get some pixie dust for all his hard work and dedication.

My hat goes off to all the teachers for having to deal with all the paperwork, testing and evaluating. I hope all of you have some more of those golden moments that help carry you through those darker times of grading and checking boxes.

I can't wait for you to come back and tell us about the janitor's reaction. That is so sweet of you all.

I think I am too unaware of how things are in the schools. I'm just starting my exposure with Abby in Kindergarten. She as at Rockvale in the Rutherford County System. I feel so naive. I alos keep thinking how lucky those kids are to have you in thier lifes:love:

Oooo... I got to go to the Pangani Exploration Trail, looks really cool. And yeah, totally jealous of the Wild Africa Trek people :/

The cupcakes and other desserts look delicious! Mmmmm... :goodvibes I'll take... the whole menu minus the yogurt (:

Can't wait to read more! :mickeyjum

I would be sad if our district frowned upon hugs. I get and give hugs daily not only from this years students but from the students I've had in past years. Here in Kansas we are under the pressure to succeed and prepare students for testing that begins for them next year. We too have a class that is lower than in previous years and our principal is a "nervous nellie" about them. We have intensive intervention plans in place, and some days with so many people coming in pulling our core kids we are up to our eyeballs just making plans for them!!!
Oh well, it's what we do. I strive to make school as fun for them as possible. As long as they want to come to school hopefully I can teach them something.

Next week is our field trip to the Kansas State Fair!:scared1::laughing:

Have a great weekend with your family. I do miss seeing my boys play soccer, but a new generation has come along now. This one plays in ponytails, though.

A teacher does get attached to the kids. I've got a couple of little bitty fellas this year who are 'pistols', but they are cute as they can be. I had three, but thanks to the principal, he sent one to the new teacher. After they are finished having their bad attitude or metldown moments, they can be really sweet, as if nothing happened. They can go from tough as nails to little softies within a few minutes. Compared to last year's group, this one is a breeze, but I still am constantly looking at hallway displays in the 3rd and 4th grade halls to see my old students' papers and art work in order to keep up with them. I think where I really realize how connected I am is when I go shopping. I might see a snake book and think, "Oh, Zackary would love that!" or "Jada would go nuts over that fingernail polish set."

I'm sorry school has been so taxing for you this year. It really seems crazy to make you jump through all those hoops. I have two teachers in my family, so I know that things aren't great everywhere. The Headless Horsemen is so cool. I can hear that clippety-clop right now as I think of him!

I hope your teacher family members are in a good system. I feel sure that lightens the load a bit. Teaching has changed so much for everyone, but those of us on the 'bottom rungs' probably feel a lot more discouraged. I can't imagine that every system is feeling as distraught as ours.

why yes, if only someone had given you codes and more paperwork earlier...you would have been a much better teacher all those years ago!!

We have all asked each other how we made it through learning to read and write and go to college without all this testing nonsense. We were losing teachers who were past retirement time and just wanted to stay until it got too crazy. Now we are losing the younger ones, too. Our faculty has changed drastically in the past few years.

That's one of our focuses for this year - not to lose the top academic fourth th to private schools and other counties. As things get worse, they keep fleeing, and that makes it even worse for our scores.

Your post is one of the main reasons my DD is in private school. I want her education to be as fun as possible, not boot camp. I hated having to be that way with my students and I knew I didn't want that for her. My kids grew up in private school. Everyone has their reasons, and my reason was to have them rooted in a Christian environment every day. It was an expensive journey, but well worth it, in my opinion and for my family. Every family has to decide what is best for their own group and feel comfortable with it, and that was comfortable for us.

I need a big mental break. ::yes:: Now that I finally, as of yesterday afternoon, have the reading level I will be teaching, I can start my four hour paperwork on the lesson I will teach for my observation.

I have never done a ticker. I probably don't have room for one. I do enjoy counting down by weeks, though, and we are at FIVE! :woohoo:

Oh Caren, sounds like some serious headaches and pressure to have to deal with along with wanting to do what is best for your kids!! I feel your pain!!

YAY for Brooklynn knowing, but poor Bella...hopefully she will have much fun looking forward to Disney and Santa Claus!!

Bella is obsessed with watching Disney youtube videos on the 'puter' right now. Because her Disney love is at an all-time high, I will try not to say much at all about the 'Brooklynn and Me' trip for fear of her wrath!

Liberty Square it is! I love that period in history and always enjoyed watching Spectro there so I think I will try to watch this parade there as well!

I am looking very forward to spending this special time with the big girl. I plan to make her feel like she is large and in charge during this trip. Then, after she has the big head, I will leave her back at home for her Mommy to have to deal with. I hope she will have wonderful memories of this trip. I will take plenty of pictures to help her out. ;)

well, all I can do is offer this - I hope it gets better and it's good to find those little bright spots! I hope someday, when he graduates, he thinks of you!

Luckily, Brooklynn is so busy she doesn't have time to drive Jill too crazy about the trip. Mostly I think she talks about it when they are in the car. Jill will do something special with Bella that week, too. It won't keep her from being upset that she is not going to Dizhy Wuhld, but I think we can get through this unharmed if we play our cards right. :upsidedow

I think so many of us feel that way right now with the education world in the mess it is in. We just have to remember and hold tight to those bright moments. After all, it is for moments like helping that little boy hang up his work, that we are teachers.

Have a great time watching Brooklyn play soccer this weekend.

I would like to go back to the Beaver Cleaver days where Beav and all of his friends sat quietly in neat little rows, and the worst thing that ever happened was that somebody chewed gum or put a pop-up snake in the teacher's drawer. I feel sure Miss Landers did not do DIBELS, Running Records, or Fuchs Probes, either. :)

Just popping in to let you know that I am still here and doing my best to keep up. I have enjoyed peeking in most mornings and getting a bit of Disney joy, so thank you for that. Pictures coming tonight. I would do it now, but I have to get on the road soon.

I look forward to seeing your classroom. :teacher:

My hat goes off to all the teachers for having to deal with all the paperwork, testing and evaluating. I hope all of you have some more of those golden moments that help carry you through those darker times of grading and checking boxes.

It's a mess. We live for those golden moments.

And Disney trips. :thumbsup2

I can't wait for you to come back and tell us about the janitor's reaction. That is so sweet of you all.

As long as you stay out of Metro Nashville, I think it will be somewhat better. It is definitely different from district to district.

I will tell about the janitor's reaction later today when I have more time. I have to get ready to head out in a few minutes, since Brooklynn has an early soccer game.

Oooo... I got to go to the Pangani Exploration Trail, looks really cool. And yeah, totally jealous of the Wild Africa Trek people :/

I'm getting back to Disney pictures tonight.
I will, I will, I will!!! :dance3:

Next week is our field trip to the Kansas State Fair!

Some of our kids have a whole crew of clipboard grow-ups in and out all the time. I think the ones that don't have that get jealous sometimes.

We used to take ours to the State Fair. Time constraints don't allow for that any more. The way our bus system is, we have to be back at school from any field trip by 12:30. That limits us greatly on what we can do.

Well that was our number one reason as well for choosing private school, but all the testing nonsense would be my number two reason. The other little girls that I keep after school go to the public school that my DD would've been sent to, and I am so disgusted by the things they tell me about when they get off the bus here in the afternoons. I am so thankful that my DD is not having to hear and experience those things. I wish I was rich so I could pay for them to go to private school as well. Private school certainly isn't perfect, but like you said, it's what's working for us and what we feel comfortable with. If we lived in a better school district, we would have considered public school, but the schools around here are full of gangs, drugs, sex, violence, you name it! It's awful! No way am I sending my kid to deal with that everyday. So as long as the Lord continues to provide the means :worship: , we will continue to send her to private school. Our schools here are so bad that if I could not longer afford private education, I would home school her. It's very sad, and makes me wonder how we got to this place? It wasn't that long ago that I went to those same schools and they were great back then. What's happened? :sad2:

Sorry school has been very tough for you. It is much different here, but I think that's the reason why I was never put in a private school and also the fact I've been above average in my testing and grades, so I don't know what happens to the ones who are below me, well... not enough, but anyways I'm glad to hear there have been a few bright spots though.

So nice of all the staff to send your custodian on a vacation and that's great you put together those princess bags, so sweet. Such a great treat for someone who's done that much for others and just hasn't done anything for himself.

That's great to hear about your little student having a little victory. It's very sad to know he's probably not going to last so long in school. I think the worse part is when they last for so long in school and no longer have the drive to really improve like with this kid. And you can't hug him? Awwww... I can't believe your whole district frowns up on that, that's just... not right, in my opinion, but at least you have really given him something to be proud of and made it known to really help drive him through the rest of school (:

I hope everything slows down for you soon, MeMom :thumbsup2

:grouphug:..for all my teacher friends! :grouphug:

What a special moment for that little boy in your class...I'm sure he felt proud to have his work featured on the wall. :goodvibes

Have fun today with your girls today in Alabama!

It will be excitting for Brooklynn to have her MeMom all to herself.
You will have a good time planning and laughing together.
Bella will be fine...after all she get's her Mommy & Daddy all to herself that week!
Who wouldn't want to have Santa & Disney. ;)

Did you make any ADR's for October?

I made mine for March this morning...after many tries online I gave up and called and got a very nice lady who got me everything we wanted. :woohoo:

No surprizes...we booked Wolfgang Puck Cafe, Chef Mickey's, 'OHana, Kona, Crystal Palace bkfst, Le Cellier and new for us Tony's Town Square. :thumbsup2

I also added a day so we are going to go for 5 nights, 6 days!
Flights are booked too! Early arrival and late departure.
My DMom is the most excitted about seeing the F&G Festival.
I will probably book her the "Behind the Seeds" tour as a birthday gift.

I'm off to work...:flower1:

Hope you enjoyed Brooklynn's game! My mom went up to see my nephews game today too but it got canceled due to the rain! She was planning on hitting the outlet mall today anyways to get the grandkids some fall clothes...so she just got to go a little earlier!
Caleb and I went to Columbus, OH to Toys R us/Babies R us for a Thomas Celebration thingy...basicaly they give out free match game cards, coloring...they read some thomas books...and most importantly played with lots of thomas toys! He loved it and threw a huge fit when it was time to leave. We picked up a baby shower gift for one of my friends while we were there also! Then we went to the mall to hit the Disney Store but did not get anything. I am hoping the prices for the t shirts will be better in Gatlinburg at the Disney Outlet!
