Mingos in the Watah! What in the Wuhld?

Well, I'm poor all the time, so we should have a lot in common.
I need to wait until 2013 to go again, but I do not have the fortitude to do that. I'm Disney poor, to be honest, but as long as I am paying my bills on time, I feel okay about things. I justify it by knowing that it is my only fun things that costs any money. I don't buy clothes, shoes, purses, jewelry, don't go to movies or out to eat, etc. I don't drink or smoke, so I don't spend money on anything like that. I pay my own bills, and I contribute to several charities and to church.

No, do I have a bundle of money in a savings account?
I'll let this smiley guy answer -

:lmao:

I think that means no. ;)
He's just so rude sometimes. :upsidedow

You know, MeMom. You may be Disney poor but you have an awful lot of memories and moments with your family and I think that is what Disney is all about. Spending time with the ones you love.

I also love your philosophy that if you are paying your bills on time then your okay with spending your money on Disney. Marc & I debated a lot about going in January but when it came down to it, it will be over a year since we had a vacation together and I think it's important to take that time and it's money that could be used to pay our debt down faster but in the grand scheme of things I'm okay with using that money to vacation together. As long as our bills get paid on time, we are a-ok! :thumbsup2

I named Drew after a character from The Waltons, although not a main character. At one point, Elizabeth had a boyfriend named Drew Cutler, and I thought he was cute and a neat kid, as far as his character on the show. I also liked the name Drew because it sounded like a strong name to me. This actor appeared again many years late in a military series of some kind, although I don't remember any more than that.
I don't think they make great TV shows like the Waltons anymore. I grew up watching re-runs with my Mom & Dad. Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was another of our favorites. I still get excited when I catch an episode of either of these on tv in re-runs. :thumbsup2

Hi MeMom! I am coming out of lurkdom to agree with Leslie! You might be Disney poor, but you are family rich!

My DH and I were fortunate enough to take a cruise with my father-in-law right before he passed away unexpectedly. He worked, worked, worked and never took any vacations. His best friends talked him (and a group of us) to go and it was a great time, great memories and we will always cherish that time.

It seems that we know so many people that just worked all the time waiting for their retirement to travel or take vacations and then either never made it or passed away shortly after retiring. About 4 years ago my DH and I said...what are we waiting for! So we bought DVC, which forces us to take the time and go to WDW. We fell in love with Disney and haven't looked back. We are making so many great memories with our family and friends! There is no price you can put on it!

So, I say enjoy! You only have one life to live!

I'm lookin' for a cousin of mine. Says he works on the Jungle Cruise. :confused3

:lmao: :lmao:

I make my DH go on that ride every time! Even though I know he only does it to humor me.

What are the chances that I can get my then 16 month old on this ride without traumatizing her during the "Alien" scene?

I WISH I was only Disney poor!!

Our bills are getting paid on time but we do have some consumer debt (credit card) which used to be really bad but has been steadily paid down over time. We'll be out of debt once we get the money from our house sale because we'll pay off the credit card and put the rest in the bank.

My kids have never lived anywhere else but we can't afford this house so we had to sell it. Because we are only anticipating being in Windsor for another 1.5 years, we decided to rent. The house we have rented is nice, in a good area and not too far from our current residence. But I'm heartsick about leaving.

I love my house...we chose the blueprint design and all the finishes (tiles, cupboards, counter tops etc) inside of it. And it was brand new when we moved in. I'm having trouble sleeping because of it.

What if I hate living in our new place? What if I'm miserable for a year and a half (or longer!! Let's face it...he may need more time to complete his PhD than he thinks.)

Sorry...this has become maudlin. :sad2:

Anyway, DH has to go to Barcelona in October to present a paper at a conference. Poor baby! :lmao: The university is covering all the costs so he needs nothing more than what little spending money he's going to bring.

I thought that would be a perfect time to take the kids down to Disney (free dining!!) without him. Unfortunately, the university is not willing to pay for that. :rotfl2: I've been saving since our last trip but since our last trip was only in January, I don't have enough.

I'm truly blessed and grateful to have been able to get to Disney three times in the last three years. I just hope I don't have to wait three years to go again!

Love and prayers for the nephew and his roommate's family.

I totally agree about being Disney poor. What difference does it make to anyone how you spend your 'extra' money? I say as long as you pay your own way in life, then what you choose to do with your money is YOUR business. Some people choose new cars, home improvements, eating out every night, fancy TV & cell phone packages, etc. etc.... We all make a choice of what to do with our financial leftovers and I don't see how one thing is more sensible than another. People criticize us for spending money on travel every year b/c their philosophy is that we spend the money for a week of fun and then have nothing to show for it. I TOTALLY disagree with that. I have A LOT to show for the money I spend on vacation, it just isn't in the form of 'things' that lie around the house and collect dust! What do I have to show for that money? I have pure joy in my thoughts and warm fuzzies in my heart that I will have for the rest of my life whenever I think about our trips or look back on the pictures. A car payment or a cell phone plan has never done that for me! ;)

And I couldn't agree more about the state of television today! In fact, I don't even need to get going on that topic or I may never shut up! :headache: There is NOTHING on TV for families. LL, you think it is bad now, just wait until you have children... then you will really see just how few choices you have. We have pretty much just given up on TV. We watch the news occasionally just to keep up with the world around us, but that's it. We rent pretty much everything we watch from Netflix. We have gone through the entire 9 seasons of Little House on the Prairie and we are getting ready to start the Walton's. I think it is so sad that we have to do that. I guess that is why I love Disney so much, b/c it is one of the very few things left in the world that families can enjoy without any worries. :guilty:

Oh I hope your right! I, too, am a classic type A child where I knit pick at certain things, have some selective OCD tenancies, and want everything to be perfect. Including the people around me  I'm really bad I know. The worse part is, though, I'm part of a mixed family so we have two type A female teens rampaging around the house :scared1:

Oh wow! Well teenagers in the house is a challenge no matter what the personalities are! But I am the same way that you are. I get very frustrated when people aren't perfect even though I know I'm not either! :rolleyes1 Being a type A is really hard! I always look at my DH and wish I could be like him. Nothing bothers him and he just rolls with whatever comes his way. I don't think I will every be like that, but I'm getting better. I think almost everyone mellows out as they get older though, so there is hope for us. ;)

I enjoyed riding along with ya'll on Great Movie Ride!!!! We leave on Wednesday and I am overly excited!!!! I hope Brooklynn's first few days of Kindergarten were wonderful and not too hard emotionally on Jill!!!! Hope you have a fabulous weekend MeMom!!!! Anything excited planned??

I need prayers for my nephew one of his roommates, friend and co-worker died Tuesday. They are not sure of the cause yet, but he seemed to be in perfect health ate healthy, work out everyday etc. He was 27 years old. Please keep my nephew and the roommate's family in your prayers.

so sad. sending many prayers for your nephew and his roommate's family.

About the only time I turn the TV on is to watch House Hunters. I discovered (via the DISboards) that The Waltons are on Hallmark Channel, so I have watched a few of those shows this summer, when I have been home and remembered it.

I don't know if there even are 30 minute family quality sitcoms being made any more. Maybe there are and I just don't know about them, since I'm not into TV. Jill will sometimes bring me her old People magazines to show me a particular article, and when I browse through it, I recognize very few names and faces. I can't even stand to watch a commercial of any of these competition shows they have on - get a boyfriend/girlfriend, sing, dance, whatever - much less watch the show. They are extremely popular, though, so I know I am in the minority.

Yes, I pay my own bills, so I don't feel any guilt about the Disney trips. I know some people who have to keep their trips secret until it's almost time to go so that they don't have to field questions for so long about going again, and I am glad I don't have to deal with that.

Hi MeMom! I am coming out of lurkdom to agree with Leslie! You might be Disney poor, but you are family rich!

I saw that happen with my dad. He went into the Air Force as a teenager and stayed there twenty years. After he got out, he went to work for the Post Office. He got cancer, but he still worked up until the night he went into the hospital. He woke up with severe chest pains that evening and was 'ambulanced' to the hospital. He never came home. He didn't get to retire and live a lot of years of just doing whatever he wanted to. Since he was an AF guy, though, he had seen almost every part of the world, so that was good.

I have thought about DVC, but I think that would hurt the amount of trips for me instead of help. I'm fine with a value place, so I think I am better off just sticking with the way I do it. If I have to pay a monthly payment to WDW for only one week's worth of points at a DVC place, I won't get to take 2-3 more value trips during a year. Does that makes sense?

P.S. Now that you came out of lurkdom, feel free to hang out with us in DIStown. :thumbsup2

I make my DH go on that ride every time! Even though I know he only does it to humor me.

What are the chances that I can get my then 16 month old on this ride without traumatizing her during the "Alien" scene?

I think it would be hard to be Type A. I'm like type 'way on down in the STUV section', so I can't make myself stress over things, any more than A's can make themselves not stress. I would probably get on your nerves not letting things worry me when you felt they should be worried about.

I have turned on the Disney Channel a few times to try to catch a movie every once in while, but every time I have turned it on it seems like it's the same tweenage shows. I liked Zach and Cody a long time ago, but I haven't seen these newer shows to see whether I could like them, too. I just see the same type stuff and flip it back to HGTV. :goodvibes

I just noticed I missed an update and wanted to wish Brooklynn good luck on her first day of Kindergarten (though I think it's already passed)! I'm sure she'll be a great addition to the Kindergarten class of '11/'12. (:

I enjoyed riding along with ya'll on Great Movie Ride!!!! We leave on Wednesday and I am overly excited!!!! I hope Brooklynn's first few days of Kindergarten were wonderful and not too hard emotionally on Jill!!!! Hope you have a fabulous weekend MeMom!!!! Anything excited planned??

Nothing exciting here. I am working on the dock scene for my classroom, but I am doing it at home.

It makes perfect sense. I would go every other month if I could. When we first bought into DVC we had (have) plenty of points to go a few times a year by ourselves. The last couple of times we went with my family, then our closest friends. We had such an amazing time this last time with our friends (their FIRST visit!) that we booked another trip with them for next May. So, we have changed from going a few times a year to 1 or 2 with our friends because we enjoy their company and sharing the magic with them. We also use our visits to meet other friends there that we only see while at WDW.

P.S. Now that you came out of lurkdom, feel free to hang out with us in DIStown. :thumbsup2

I certainly will!

I have a lot of catching up to do and am hoping to do it this weekend. I started my new job Monday and I've been pretty sick so it was quite the week. Miss all my DIS friends...:lovestruc

I was just wondering if you could tell me how much the pink refillable mug is? My friend's headed down there in 3 weeks and I'm gonna have her pick one up for me! Thanks!

so sad. sending many prayers for your nephew and his roommate's family.

I imagine this is probably the most horrible week they have ever had to go through in their lives.

I know all of those trips are awesome! And it is so fun to share Disney things with first-timers. :thumbsup2

I will definitely have to get some photographic evidence of my first mickey waffle

:goodvibes

The question is: Will you pour the syrup over Mickey's face, or will you dip body parts, like the girls do?

I have a lot of catching up to do and am hoping to do it this weekend. I started my new job Monday and I've been pretty sick so it was quite the week. Miss all my DIS friends...

Sorry to hear you have not felt well. Is it sinus troubles, a virus, or.....

maybe a new addition? :rolleyes1
Remember, there was some significant coin-throwing going on at Wilderness Lodge a few weeks ago. ;)

I was just wondering if you could tell me how much the pink refillable mug is? My friend's headed down there in 3 weeks and I'm gonna have her pick one up for me! Thanks!

The resort refillable mugs were selling at $13.49. I believe.
The parks mugs are $5.75, but they are not refillable.

I loved seeing Brooklyn thru the years! Hope school is going well!!!

School is going well. She made it through her first three days just fine. Like you, though, her teacher is used to spelling Brooklyn with only one n. Brooklynn had to correct her on Friday. :teacher: Jill says the teacher will get used to spelling it nn this year, and then she'll have a Brooklyn next year and have to start all over. :upsidedow

***************************************

I've been just going by the pictures to tell what went on during the trip, but I came across my notes this morning, so I am going to backtrack to share a few things I left out.

#1 - The CM standing at the Rapunzel rope drop was Kyle from Virgina Beach. He had also worked in Hollywood Studios before coming to Magic Kingdom. (Remember, I said I was giving you more CM information on this trip. ;))

#2 - In the afternoon, before we had gone to Wilderness Lodge, Jill and John went down to Everything Pop to shop while I stayed back at the rooms with the girls as they napped. When they returned, she had 'prizes'! She had found the blue Mickey head spoon rests for $1.99 each, so she got one for each of us.

#3 - I forgot all about Happydog's semi-plans to meet us at Wilderness Lodge, too. We had been texting, but when it cam to it, she sent word that they were just leaving Blizzard Beach and would not be able to make it. We were disappointed not to get to see those sweet boys of hers, but we all know how precious Disney time is, and they only had a couple of days there. That was our only night for being able to see Fantasmic, so we didn't want to change our planes, either, and her bunch was going to out to dinner, anyway. Unfortunately, it just wasn't going to work well for us to meet up this trip.

#4 - My notes reminded me that before we sat down to eat our chicken dinners at Pop, Jill and John ran into some real classy people. Or maybe they were not classy. These were the kind of people that can give value residents a trashy name, and if everyone judges value resort guests on people like this, I can't say that I blame them for their thoughts.

The family had a crew of kids that were arranging the kids' chairs into a theater in front of the TV, which was fine. Our girls have done it, and we have seen others who have, as well. Kids think that's fun. Anyway, Jill was trying to get the girls situated at a kiddie table and went to get two of the small chairs to bring to the table. One of the moms called out to her that her kids were playing with those chairs! I wasn't there, because I was getting my stuff, since we swap off to go get food. Jill said she couldn't believe that lady was going to try to tell her she could not take empty 'theater' seats for Brooklynn and Bella to be able to sit down at a table. :headache: She took the chairs anyway, and I came up about that time. Jill and John went to get food, and I got to listen to the obnoxious group. The kids were up, down, and all around. The adults were all very loud talkers. One was telling her daughter to come here, and the little girl was not cooperating. The mom went into the 'I brung you to Disney World and all you want to do is play with the d--- chairs. Let's go!"

I was very glad when they finally gathered their entire crew and made their way out. :)

Okay, I think that brings me up to date with the help of my notes.

I'm surprised Jill didn't give them a piece of her mind ;) It takes all kinds doesn't it!

I really hate it when people give the value resorts a bad name! It is all about people's behavior. You don't have to act like a fool.

I totally would have said something though. But that's just me. ;) I wou,d have probably said "and WDW has designated you owner of these chairs?"

Hi MeMom! :wave2:
I actually got caught up last night but it was way past Harper's bedtime so I had to get her to bed and didn't get anything posted.
I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane with Brooklynn as she went off to her first day of Kdg!
No surprise on my part that she has had a great three days. She is just that kind of girl!

Now about those POP trashies. Give me a break. There is no such thing as a cheap Disney trip, even if you stay at a value. I just don't know what has happened to common courtesy.
