Miley Cyrus... why?

Just America going over-the-top stupid about nudity again.

*shudder*

This photo looks like the type all the young, wholesome actresses use when they want to start being considered for adult roles and break out of the teeny bopper image. As everyone has said, it seems that it would have been better if Miley had waited a few years since she's still making a lot of money being a Disney star.

Oh boy. I don't think the photo is that horrible. It's a bit inappropriate for a 15 year old, but beyond that, I think it is being blown WAY out of proportion here. As far as the one with the boyfriend, give me a break. She was just laying across his lap...it's nothing that I didn't see or do when I was her age. When we were on band trips, etc, on the bus, we were constantly sleeping that way! The bra shot...inappropriate but totally normal for a kid her age, IMO. Would I be happy if I had a daughter that had a pic like that? Not really and she'd hear about it. But she's a kid, she's not perfect.

Really? You'd like to see a 15 year old teenager naked? If so, for what reason? It's just "natural" like nudism?

America = The New Taliban

When will folks realize that making a big deal about it gives is MORE attention than if it is ignored? I also wonder what effect all this attention paid to this stuff has on all those attention-starved girls who's parents are showing more passion towards this than towards what's going on in their own child's lives. Probably the exact opposite of what was intended.

Huh? Your first comment says we (America specifically) "go over the top" about nudity (remember, she's just 15 and she wasn't really nude) by the reaction to this. Then you state your concern about the impact the reaction will have, but apparently you're NOT concerned at all about the photographs themselves.

Take a stroll through any large mall and tell me that a lot of teens aren't prancing around with nearly every private "bit" hanging out. We see it in their dress, we see it in their actions, we see it in their text messages, we see it in their words and we see it in their tattoos and piercings. Face the fact that teens/kids (some much MUCH younger than Miley) today are being over sexualized AND some (I think a lot) of parents are OK with it. I can only assume that you're OK with that too.

Making a big deal of it should make people stop and think about it. Then they can reflect on the issue. I would be more worried when people don't react to stuff like this.

Ick. I have only seen the "bedsheet " one. Gross. Child porn. Why? "Her" statement that was released says she took place in a photoshoot that was supposed to be "artistic" but now she is embarrassed. Ummmmmmmmm all forms of porn could be considered artistic. Let me just say when ever someone is naked and wrapped in a bedsheet, and giving a "come hither" look at the camera, it is suggesting ONE thing. Duh! This girl is 15. This is disgusting!

There goes another one! No role models for our girls. I was so happy about the whole Hannah Montana thing becasue I was thrilled there was wholsome thing my daughter could enjoy and it was cool and I didn't have to worry about it. Now this girl and her family have just sold her down the river and I have to try to guide my daughter down the straight and narrow without any girls in the entertainment industry to point to.

How hard is it? Um, clothes good. Naked, and SOLD to a magazine, bad. Just go about it like you would with any daughter that is 15 and you will be fine. If I took my 15 yr old daughter to a portrait and the photographer (no matter how famous) wanted her to remove her top and wrap in a sheet for an "artistic" shot, I would say NO. Um, red flag. My daughter is 15! She will keep her darn clothes ON. Why can't they do that with their 15 year old daughter? Why would you allow any photo of your daughter to be taken and published on a magazine that you wouldn't wouldn't want to hang in your livingroom for guests to see?

I do believe this is being blown out of proportion - and I also believe the Cyrus camp knows exactly what they are doing...

food for thought:

1 - this is nothing new
2 - it doesn't mean Cyrus is doomed and will go the way of the likes of Spears

case in point: Brooke Shields did "Pretty Baby" when she was 12!!!! "Blue Lagoon" followed when she was 15. She had previous nudes done when she was 10. Is this the life I would choose for my 10 yr old DD, no way...but Shields seems to have turned out pretty OK!

as for Cyrus: maybe a little too suggestive for her age IMHO, but not pornographic - and again I think they know exactly what they are doing and it is working!!!!

I completely agree with you on this.

I just saw the photo and frankly, was not bothered by it. Her shoulder and part of her back were uncovered. Heavens, no! Body parts!! What gave it the air of seductiveness was the way her makeup and hair was done, IMO. Not the fact that she was wrapped in a big sheet (not topless). A day at the beach reveals far more than that photo.

Are we so hardened in this society that something is only wrong if "parts" are hanging out? I have seen completely nude photos (of adults) that don't bother me at all as they were in good taste and artistic. I have seen photos of adults that had the "parts" covered, but were more raunchy in what they implied and I wouldn't let my kids see them. While this photo would not make me bat an eye if the girl was 5 years older, at 15 it is wrong. There is not a line drawn in the sand that clothes =good and parts out=bad. It is the total package. This package is a 15 year old in a seductive pose with a bedsheet. Wrong.

I think these threads raise more questions about our society's adults than about our children. :sad2:

I agree but I don't think we're thinking about in the same manner.

Really? You'd like to see a 15 year old teenager naked? If so, for what reason?
Predictably, you've missed the point. The more attention people pay to this, the more they tell our children that this is the way to get attention.

The attention paid to this does far far far more damage than the incident itself.

America = The New Taliban
Holy cow. Did you just say that? Talk about over the top. This is completely off base. It has no sense of perspective or even perhaps rationality.

Huh? Your first comment says we (America specifically) "go over the top" about nudity (remember, she's just 15 and she wasn't really nude) by the reaction to this.
To be fair, I haven't seen the photos. (I don't really care to either, so don't send me links.)

Then you state your concern about the impact the reaction will have, but apparently you're NOT concerned at all about the photographs themselves.
Not at all. That's the point. The only thing I'm concerned about is the reaction. The reaction is the problem, not the photos.

Take a stroll through any large mall and tell me that a lot of teens aren't prancing around with nearly every private "bit" hanging out.
Perhaps they're doing it because people pay undo attention to it; because people care about it so much. If so, those people paying undo attention to it are not only part of the problem, but are the crux of the problem. In places where nudity is not such a source of maniacal over-reaction, they don't have many of the problems associated with this.

I can only assume that you're OK with that too.

That's bull. Time and time again we've learned that if we pay attention to something, then that will foster it, not make it go away. Parents should focus on what is truly important: their children.

This is OT, but once again, I just felt the need to say that of all people on the DIS boards you are my polar opposite. Every post I have EVER read that you have posted is the absolute opposite of anything I would EVER write. Not arguing, just pointing that out. Time and time again, whenever I read something that disturbs me to the core, I look, and you have posted it.

I just find that interesting. I really am not saying this to be argumentative or put you down...just saying...we are OPPOSITES in the world. Like on Seinfeld with the "Bizarro Jerry" who was the complete opposite of everything Jerry stood for. Like "Bizzarro superman". You are the "Bizarro Talulabelle"

I'd post my own thoughts - but John...you took the words right out of my mouth!

What the heck is wrong with her PARENTS!?!?!?

Like "Bizzarro superman". You are the "Bizarro Talulabelle"
I don't know who "Bizzarro superman" is, but perhaps the tag fairy will make some use of this. :)

I do see a lot wrong with our society, and there is no way for that to be the case unless there were a lot of people holding what I believe to be "wrong" perspectives. Hopefully, though discussion, folks will open their minds to alternative perspectives and our society will continue to progress down a good path.

You mean there isn't a single woman in history that you couldn't point to as a role model for your children? Why do you need someone in the entertainment industry?

Oh no you didn't just say these things in the same post. :rotfl2:

And you evidently didn't read the post you replied to. :sad2:

You mean there isn't a single woman in history that you couldn't point to as a role model for your children? Why do you need someone in the entertainment industry?

No, there are plenty of woman in history that are wonderful role models. There are plenty of women today that are wonderful role models. I think there have even been women in the past that were in the entertainment industry that my daughter could look up to. (Joanne Woodward and Grace Kelly come to mind)

I just mean that right now, today, out of all the people my daughter watches on tv, sees in movies or listens to on her IPOD, I don't want to be like any of them. Yesterday, if she said she wanted to be just like Miley, I would have said "well , that's ok, not what I would pick for you, but if that is what you want, she seems like a good person that has not sold out", but now, I woudl have to say, "it's ok for you to like her products, but not want to be like her. "
