Middle and High School Girls wearing shorts to school. What is too short?

Wow, at least take them to Vicky's & get a convertible. Doesn't guarantee that the straps will be entirely covered, but I give good marks for effort.

I'm amazed at what 13 and 14 year old girls are allowed to wear out of the house.

My DD 16 attends Public HS. There rule is: that if you put your hand down, the shorts have to be below your knuckles. If that make any sense. If not you have to change into your pe shorts. Tops have to have 2" straps.

My rules...if mom don't like it you will have to change!

That's funny, because all of my gym/cheerleading shorts are shorter than my regular shorts. :rotfl: Also, I don't have any tanktops that I have two inch straps. Guess I wouldn't make it in high school these days.

The school has a "no underwear" showing rule so that covers boys with the low riding jeans and girls with bras and undies hanging out either end of shorts.

The problem with that rule is the way they can get around it is :scared: Some kids feel compelled to prove they can get past the rules ya know:rotfl:

You'd like our MS principle. The first year he was there, for the boys if the pants were hanging so low that the under drawers could be seen, you went to the office and you were handed one of the belts that he had a supply of. If they ran outta belts, he had zip ties that they would thread through the belt loops and pull tight so the pants sat at their waists. For the girls, not as many offenders, they have over sized school t-shirts they had to put on over their other top. Most of them were XXL/XXXL size shirts so they swam in them.

The 2nd year, the boys thought they had figured out how to get around the belt/zip tie option by cutting off their belt loops. God love the principle he had gone out and bought a bunch of suspenders - had a couple of the rainbow Mork and Mindy sets - and if you were wearing pants with out belt loops, you put on a pair of suspenders.

This is his 3rd year at our MS and the kids pretty much know they aren't going to get away with pushing the rules. But if your a girl and you wear shorts that are deemed to short - you get to wear an oversized t-shirt all day.

DD12 does catch grief from some of the girls, because she wears a lot of tops that have a v-neck but she always wears a cami under it. One of the girls told her she'll give them the idea that all the girls should wear cami's under their shirts. They keep telling her to just wear the shirt and if you can look down the V and see her bra it's no big issue. She doesn't want anything to do with that. Heck she wears a cami under her crew neck t-shirt and sweaters.

Uniforms are VERY expensive and not everyone can afford them. Uniform pants are 80 to 100 each and very cheaply made. (McCarthy`s up here in Canada)

I do not pay $150.00 for a pair of jeans for my daughter.......

Definitely not the case here. All public schools require a uniform the specify what color polo or oxford shirt and what color bottom. They must be plain with no decoration or visible brand name, and there are length requirments. One complete uniform, top and bottom, is $20 at Wal-mart, so you can have a week's worth for what you are paying for one.
Private schools have one specific supplier. This is our first year in uniforms and I spent $330 for 5 jumpers, 5 shirts, shoes, jacket, 2 hairbows, 5 PE shorts, and 4 pair of leggings for cold weather. I couldn't have bought a year's worth of school clothes for anywhere close to that.

Oh, they're probably not "allowed." :lmao: What they wear leaving the house probably isn't what you see them wearing at that moment. ;)

That's sensible. Our school would rather have our daughters sitting humiliated and crying in the front office until the parents arrive with clothing. Because nothing's more important than getting those tramps out of the classroom!
Yeah, I'm just a little bitter about this... and it's not just MY daughter! I went to get my hair done on Friday and the salon owner had to leave to take her daughter a pair of jeans because her skirt was too short. She said her daughter was bawling her eyes out because she was so embarrassed. I think the assistant principal is becoming downright obsessed with seeking out girls wearing clothing she feels is inappropriate. And there's no pointing out the handbook to her because she just says "too bad."

Back during my HS days, it was a well known fact that our dean of girls was a former "lady of the night by the name of Cookie" and she had not one second of remorse or issue with ripping some poor girl who wore anything SHE THOUGHT was questionable. She would have a girl bawling in a heartbeat. And she wouldn't do it privately either, she berate them in the main hallway. And it would get really ugly if during her tirade in a crowded hallway during passing time and she happened to utter the words hooker or prosititute as it usually lead to one of the passing students to supply the standard reply of "you should know all about that now, wouldn't you Cookie."

But like someone else said, some of the outfits the cheerleaders and poms wore on game days were very far from full coverage. And there were girls on both teams that did not want to wear their outfits because of their shortness. And the kicker was, they would only be allowed to wear their warm up pants under/over their skirts on cold days, to get in and out of the building - by order of the school and teacher(s) in charge of the teams.

At my sons baseball game yesterday, a HS girl was working the consession stand....

This girl had super tight shorts on that at most covered her butt cheeks, and at the same time had a low cut tank top on so she was falling out the top as well.

Guess that's why the line was so long for nachos last night... ;)

I've been dropping off and picking up my 14 year old freshman son from school since February. Since the weather is warming up....I've been a little bit shocked to see some of the clothes the girls are wearing. My own son has pants that fall down around his hips (not sure it's really his fault...he's got wide shoulders, but everything else is like a toothpick). I don't think our school really says much about dress code...assuming there is one. I've seen all manner of dress and hair colors over the last few months....it's been a learning experience. So glad that my only girl is 6 and I have a bit of a way to go until we have to deal with this. Maybe showing your ankles will be bad by that time?:rotfl:

Well, we have public nudity laws as well.

DD has one friend that dresses like a tramp. Her parents sent out a Christmas card of her and her sisters, she looked like a hooker in a VERY low cut dress (this was when she was in 8th grade) and they were leaning over so you got a pretty good view of 'her'. Then her parents talk about how they won't allow her to date until she is 18 and how she isn't' allowed to go anywhere with boys, how strict they are with her, but then send out THAT Christmas card??:confused3. I am sure they would be mortified to know that their "prim and proper" daughter has a not so good reputation-well with the girls anyway=the boys like her just fine :scared1:. There are plenty of parents that allow their children to dress like this.

I'm beginning to think that it might not be so much the issue of what girls are wearing to school, but what they are wearing to PROM!!!

Seriously...why does any girl need to go to a dance in a dress that reveals your entire back and the top of your butt, and also has the front cut out to reveal half of your stomach. And don't get me started on the cleavage these suckers show off. But I guess it's okay, because the skirts are long so their legs are covered!!

Finger tip rule at our middle school. Even with leggings, shorts and skirts must be fingertip length. We tried phrasing the dress code differently last year, and it was a fiasco. I think it just said, "Shorts and skirts will be an appropriate length," and therefore kids thought anything was appropriate. So we went back to the fingertip rule. An issue we ran into last year was with kids wearing shorts from the summer previously. They fit fine, but because the kids had grown several inches in the legs over the year, the shorts were too short to wear to school. Make sure to check last year's stuff again before you send your kids off to school!

Now that the warmer weather is starting, I have noticed that many of my students are wearing shorts that are (in my opinion) WAY too short.

Seriously, why do parents let their daughters leave the house with their butts hanging out? And don't get me started on the cleavage.

How is it handled in your school? There is a teacher at my school catching a lot of grief from the parents for calling out a 7th grader (repeat offender) on the fact that her butt cheeks were hanging out.

For my high school the rules are: longer than your fingertips for shorts, and no cleavage showing. The no cleavage showing rule is unfair, since it allows girls who aren't very blessed to show a lot of skin, while the more well endowed girls are very limited in what they can wear, but I think it's fair. Also, for sleaves, it has to be wider than two of your fingers but together.

The assistant principal (the obsessive one) was demonstrating to the girls how much cleavage is too much. She told them if they bent over and could see their cleavage in the mirror, then the top was inappropriate. But when she demonstrated bending over, she clutched HER top tight to her chest. :lmao: That hypocrisy didn't go unnoticed by the girls.

I had this woman for a teacher when I was in middle school. She was totally cool, and somewhat of a hippy. I can't believe how priggish and nasty she has turned out to be. Maybe middle school kids will do that to a person.
