Microwavable Bowl

I used to do the instant and add hot water from the water cooler. But I like “real” oatmeal better. Plus a lot of the instants have a lot of sodium, which I need to limit. I also use milk instead of water now for added nutritional boost. The diet I try to follow says to have 3 low fat dairy products a day.
I dont like instant oatmeal either, so for work I usually buy the quick-cook oats and am able to use my electric kettle. Although, I haven't had issues with regular oats either. They just take a little longer to soften and I have to add a little more hot water before eating because it gets too thick.

Thanks LJ. Those are cool. I can’t find links for my bowls, even though they aren’t old. I know for a fact they’re still available at Walmart. But I took pix so I’ll attach them.

The saucer/bread plate is for scale (and is a 25+ y.o. pattern called Fiesta Chilis, iirc. It’s long retired) The white bowl holds 12 oz filled to just below the rim— which ironically is only about 2 oz less than a standard Corelle ware bowl… but it *looks* a lot smaller. IMG_0028.jpeg

When I started thinking of handles— it made me think of my favorite soup mug (sometimes used for tea too). I haven’t checked, but I’m pretty sure its capacity is probably also ~12 oz. That’s the shiny black mug.

The red mug is larger, but it’s what *I* would use for Cream of Wheat or Cream of Rice (my favorite, with butter and honey or cinnamon sugar like you have on toast— yum yum 😋) or even oatmeal, if I were making it in the microwave, because I make my hot cereals with milk, and if the sides of the dish are too low or not steep enough, then it WILL boil over. So I also put a plate underneath.)

I got both of these mugs at the dollar store. The red one from DollarTree, and the black one from the 99¢ Only store.
[please forgive the background in my image, lol.]

And one last one with everything just for scale. IMG_0035.jpeg

I should say, I always put a plate or saucer under things in the microwave, not only to protect from boil overs, but also because the plate underneath doesn’t usually get hot (unless there’s boil over that cooks there for a while).

Getting yourself a good heat resistant glove will really help you. (like OveGlove, except, I like the grill ones better…. the original OveGlove sucks, because once you wash it, it looses its functionality. 🫤)

A glove makes it easier to grab things in the oven or microwave with a more natural grip, so I find it to be safer. (At least for me, because I have diminished fine motor control in my hands due to MS.) YMMV.

Now, I’m off to search new Corelle & Corningware that I haven’t seen before.

:ccat: Down the rabbit hole I gooooo….

We keep 2 of those thin silicone discs in the microwave.

If the plate or bowl is too hot, we use the top disc as a 'pot holder' for it.

Thank you for the suggestions. I was trying to avoid plastic but it might be the better option.

I make my "real" oatmeal either the night before or the morning of if I have time (I mean it's like a 5 minute ordeal). Put it in a glass food storage container. When I get to work, I reheat it gradually in the microwave and keep adding water or milk to loosen it up and it's great. Works especially well if you're doing steel cut.

As for the container, I buy any of the glass versions that are sold in the food storage section--nothing special, but I"m not fully cooking either. The container will get hot but I find a paper towel wrapped around it and carried back to my desk is enough.

Switch to overnight oats. You can make enough for 3-4 days and keep them in the fridge.

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup milk of your choice
1/4 cup Greek yogurt (I use Chobani vanilla)
1 tablespoon ground flax seed
1 tablespoon Chia seeds
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey. (I do not use any type of sweetener. The yogurt has enough sugar for my taste)

Mix together and place in one single serve container with a sealable lid. (I use a 3 cup Pyrex bowl) Place in fridge overnight or make 3 or 4 servings and store up to 4 days.

You can put different topping, such as fruit, peanut butter, chopped nuts, etc.

I heat mine up in the morning but DH does not. Even when I heat it for 2 minutes the Pyrex bowl does not get hot.

A bag of rolled oats lasts longer than a box of instant oatmeal and is healthier.

That is exactly what I have been doing.

I did find that have the bowl off center, which is supposed to make the food cook/heat better, makes the bowl much hotter than if I keep the bowl in the center.

I use a round, plastic takeout food container from a Chinese Restaurant. I place a paper towel folded into quarters into the bottom for extra cushioning and insulation. Then I place my bowl that I am going to eat out of on top of the takeout container. Food goes in the top bowl. I place them both in the microwave.

The takeout container has a rim, (which is the part the cover fits into, but I didn't use,) that I grab on both sides as handles when I'm pulling the bowls out of the microwave. The plastic stays relatively cool. If it got hot, I'd place a second paper towel in the bottom.

We buy these bowls on Amazon. They're perfect to take leftovers to work for lunch. We've reused the same bowls since August so they're very economical.
