Michael Phelps

What I find sad isn't the pot so much, but the fact that this kid had his future made. How many swimmers can make millions? All he had to do was keep the bad out of the public eye. He might lose all his endorsements and for what?

Like him and others, its not the act, but the inability to be smart about what you have and how easily you can lose it.

I agree with everything you said but.....I think in this age it is soooo hard to keep a squeaky image. Everyone has a cameraphone ready to go to make an extra dollar off of you when you are famous.

I didn't do it. Wasn't that hard to resist :scratchin

And he's hardly a kid; he's 23. Old enough to know better. Then again, so are a lot of people a lot older than him that do the same thing. Oh well, what can ya do. :confused3

23 in chronological age, but we are talking about a boy who lost his childhood due to preparing for the Olympics. Absolutely his choice, yes, but this is often the repurcussions of those who spend their childhood in the limelight or prepping for sports or acting.

I don't think a little pot smoking was his act of stupidity. I think it was as little pot smoking at a house party with kids and camera phones that did him in.:upsidedow

I'm actually surprised this "news" didn't break sooner. I'm a 52-year-old woman living 2 hours from USC and I had heard he had spent a few days there partying with lots of girls.

This is one the prices of fame, isn't it?

I've been mulling over what to say if my kid asks about this and I've finally decided to say this:

"Come home from the Olympics with 8 gold medals and you can smoke all the pot you want." :)

That is GREAT! :rotfl2:

Really, I don't think it has to be an in depth response. He is young, and HUMAN. He made a stupid mistake. It shouldn't take away from his accomplishments. If my kids ask me about it, I am not going to act likes it's the worst thing the guy could of done. He went to a party, he took a hit on a bong, someone took his picture. Something a large percentage of college students do. (whether you want to admit that your college kid would never do it, or not)

I, personally, find his DUI much more of a shame then this photo.

This morning on the Today Show they quoted Speedo saying that basically they regret what he did but they are standing behind him. He is the best thing they have going. People who only watch swimming every 8 years know who Michael Phelps is. His name is back in the spotlight where Speedo would like for him to be. As you can see from the posts on this thread many people think that what he did wasn't that big of a deal. I think a big part of his "partying" has to do with not getting to be a normal teen or young adult. I was a pretty tame teenager and I still did a couple of things my parents will never know about. At 23 his mom no longer has any say in how he lives his life. He has the perfect combo for trouble: money, fame, hot body, and a yearning to learn what he was missing.

<<Looks like he might be in trouble with Subway - his first commercial for them was supposed to air during the Superbowl, but it was not shown.<<

Most likely, because of the muchies, looking for a foot long BLT. :smokin:

He does not lose his gold medals because he was not in a meet. He is scheduled to swim in a month in Austin. WADA tests only during meets.

Saw the SB pre game when Bob Costas read the Phelps statement. NBC is putting Phelps to be the star of the games when the London games is on NBC in 2012.

Lost millions, but will be back.

Being a kid (and sorry 23 is still a kid to me) is about making choices and consequences.

How he accepts the consequences of his actions will be interesting.

Most kids his age that stupidly accept some pot don't potentially lose millions.

He is learning a sad lesson though. Some "friend" (I assume) snagged a shot of Phelps and posssibly sold it to the news rag. Betchya he questions all his friendships now.:sad2:

I will bet he learns his lessons and whethers this storm and can get back on top as a role model.

::yes:: At least he wasn't driving while high! To me, the drunk driving thing is an outrage! How can someone be so stupid!?

With this latest incident, he just seems like a young guy taking full advantage of his new celebrity status. I just hope he learned an important lesson here. Never trust ANYONE!

me either. I'm almost 44 and haven't smoked anything.:smokin:[/QUOTE]

35 here and I've never smoked/done drugs of any kind.many of my friends& family(dh included)can say the same.

I'm glad that Speedo and Omega are standing by him! If they can pay him millions to represent their companies and not be so up in arms about this pic, I can certainly chalk it up to a stupid mistake and not condemn him. Only God and I know ALL the stupid things I have done growing up!!!!

I second this! With the DUI, he was jeapordizing his safety and the safety of those around him. With the pot smoking, he was just.....well, smoking pot :confused3 The article did not indicate that he was getting behind the wheel.
