Michael Phelps

I don't understand why athletes are so often held to a higher standard than others.

I'm the one that said I held him to a higher standard. I shouldn't have said that....what I really meant was that I hold him to the same standard I have in place for myself.

This hasn't affected my opinion of him in any way. Heck, it could have been one of my kids. Not that I know that they have ever done it, I don't. And hope that they never do. He is just a normal person that has accomplished something great. But, he is human. Not making what he did right. I have made stupid mistakes in my life, and I would hope that no one hold that over my head for the rest of my life, or think less of me. I know I am a good person, I just look back and think, "what the hell was I thinking???" Some of life's best lessons are learned the hard way. But when you are in the public eye, you are under a microfying glass. Anything you do will make the headlines. It is the price you pay for being famous. I look at what happened as a teaching lesson for my children.

As far as products he endorses, if they feel the need to drop him, I understand. It could shed a bad light on the products. I personally have never, EVER, bought a product just because someone famous endorses it. I buy a product because I like it and it suits my need. Oh, and it is usually on sale:thumbsup2 .

I think that it's nuts that people paid him millions of dollars to endorse their product and said so before. I don't begrudge him the money. I just think it is nuts that so many people would buy a product because someone they don't know suggests they buy it. Even if he swims well. Even if he swims very, very well.

I didn't think his ability to swim made him better or worse than anyone else and I don't think his pot smoking does, either.

If you buy into the glister and open the box to find worms, you have only yourself to blame.

People shouldn't allow themselves to get so attached to someone they never met that they feel disappointment when that person does something of which they don't approve.

True but ususally a lesson kids learn if they have someone they look up to (esp. in sports because so many kids do at one time or another have a favoriteone). Mine was John Milner. He played MLB. He got involved with drug use and popped my bubble. I've always considered it a life lesson.

IPlus, again, buying something because someone you don't know at all says you should...it's stupid.

I bought a Venus Razor only because Blondie on here told me it was a great razor. I still buy them! ;) :)

Also, I guess I am in the minority here, but I never tried pot.:lmao:

me either. I'm almost 44 and haven't smoked anything.:smokin:

I hope you're not trying to insinuate that getting high makes you trash things..I don't do it myself, but I know MANY people who do and never once have I even seen people who are high try to trash anything. If anything it would have been drinking that did that too him, not pot.

I could have written this as I was thinking the same thing.

I am sure this has already been said and for all I know this story could be true?? Butttt the News of the World is a real rag...almost up there with the Enquirer!

That's all!

:thumbsup2

Minnie, he issued a statement of apology for his behavior earlier in the day.

Some of the posts in this thread are disturbing to me. I get that some of you smoke marijuana, but I have news for you, you're the minority not the majority. I also get why you feel the need to make yourself and others believe you are the majority, but you're not.

Michael Phelps will most likely pay a huge price for this stupid behavior. Let's hope he learns his lesson this time, because it obviously alluded him last time.

I guess those who partake in drug use tend to associate with others who do, as well. That's why they can only count on one hand those who have not used drugs.:confused3

Just curious to how you come to the conclusion as to who is in the minority vs. the majority when it comes to people who smoke pot?

IMHO, as long as Phelps was not smoking OR drinking when he was racing, who gives a rats behind what he chooses to do? I think there are worse things young kids such as Phelps could be getting into...

Same here. Yet, I'm the first to say make it legal. Still, I don't feel sorry for Phelps and I don't blame sponsors if they let go of him. He's been behaving quite recklessly for the last few months.

I do not think those that smoke marijuana are in the majority....but I do think there are alot more teens and young adults that have tried it than their parents naively think. Most go on to realize it was a stupid part of their life, not worth the loss of jobs etc that use may involve. My guess is that Phelps will learn some big lessons.

#1 The folks who think are his friends proaly sold out their party photos for a few bucks. (I am not sure...does anyone know where the picture came from? My guess was someones phone)

#2 There are consequences to your stupid actions. Phelps may find himself out of a few millions over this stunt. Folks may have een forgiving of a DUI, but the ong kinda shows he has some issues to deal with.

Kids make alot of stupid mistakes...some with heavy consequence

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Yes it's illegal, but I'm in the camp that thinks there's a whole lot worse going on out there. It doesn't bother me. He's not my son. And his mom will lace into him I'm sure. Unfortunately it could cost him some deals though

I know he has already issued an apology (and I'm on a different topic than everyone else :lmao:), but I still don't think that looks like him at all in the photo. He has a very prominent nose, and it just doesn't look like him.

I swore up and down earlier that it wasn't him, but I'm eating my words now!

You know, if some of his endorsements had a clause in it that said he had to maintain a certain image, then he may have a problem. I think that is what happened to Kobe Bryant. Even though he was not conviced of rape, he still lost a lot of endorsements. I seem to remember that it had to do with a certain clause in the contracts. Who knows.

Looks like he might be in trouble with Subway - his first commercial for them was supposed to air during the Superbowl, but it was not shown.

OK, I have to comment on this statement. I do not smoke pot now. I will freely admit, though, that I did smoke in college- a grand total of 2 times. Didn't like the way it made me feel, so never did it again. I did not then, nor do I now, hang out with stoners, potheads, or other regular partakers of any illegal substances (that I know of- LOTS of people do LOTS of stuff in the privacy of their own homes that they don't admit to anyone else).

Of the people my age (early 40's) and younger I've discussed it with, very, very few have NOT at least tried pot once. I don't think a majority actively smoke now, but I'm almost certain the majority have tried it once or more (at least of my and later generations).

I'll tell you what. If you can smoke pot, and win 10 Olympics medals, then you deserve all the accolades you can get.

Maybe this can prove to backwards America that marijuana (and the war on drugs) is a government way of trying to tax someting that they have been unable to (like alcohol),

Wake up people, if the most decorated Olympian in history can do marijuana, maybe it's time we start to realize that is't not even as dangerous as alcohol (and in fact, not even close).
