MGM Studios has been renamed!!

I agree, it's also easier to use and recognize the acronym when making trip notes. MGM just means 'movies' in the American vernacular, while DHS sounds more like some high school's initials.

Yep - that's our school - Desoto High School (Desoto, KS)

Hey, I didn't mean to offend any state workers with my comment earlier about Oregon's state child welfare system. I know the workers are way overloaded and they're doing their best. I love my kids!

Initial guest reaction to proposed changes at WDW is usually met with the dragging of heels but in the end everyone adjusts and life goes on. After all, practically nobody ever refers to ADRs by the old PS (priority seating) acronym any more. And if they did, many folks wouldn't know what they were talking about. Epcot is not commonly referred to as Epcot Center even by the old-timers. In a few years time, asking folks at the resort bus stops if the MGM bus has come yet, will, in all likelihood, get nothing but blank stares in answer to the question.

So Disney Hollywood Studios it is. And the beat goes on...

I still call it Epcot Center most of the time, and I still call the TTA the WEDway Peoplemover. I still call DTD the Disney Village, and sometimes POR Dixie Landings. Old habits die hard. Most of the time I called the Disney-MGM Studios the Studios, and that's probably how it will be for a long time. I don't think the new name shows a lot of imagination. I think just Disney Studios Park would have been fine, or even stick a "Florida" or an "East" in there somewhere. Hollywood just doesn't seem to fit to me.

Havn't read the whole thread but I will write this anyway hoping no-one will have said it.

Anyway....Wanna know the real reason the name is changed?? My friend told me about the new name a few weeks ago as she works in MK. Disney don't own MGM, I beleive it is ABC that do (of NBC or some american tv channel that Im unfamiliar with) and Disney owe them load of money so they need to change it name. Not sure of the reasons but thats what she was told.

no, as i mentioned earlier, the content you see in the parks was always under separate contracts than the name. most of TGMR isn't MGM anyway I don't believe. now i gotta do some quick research.. brb

TGMR is in peril but that has been going on for a while. The ride is showing it's age big time and needs either major updates and refurb.. or.. more likely, it will be closed. But that's an unrelated issue to the name change.

Of the movies featured in TMGR - Here are their original studios of release.. (some of these rights may have changed hands)

Footlight Parade - Warner Bros Release
Singin in the Rain - MGM (at the time the ride was licensed)
Mary Poppins - Disney
Public Enemy - Warner Brothers
(Not Sure What John Wayne Movie is relevant)
(Ditto for Clint Eastwood - Dirty Harry?)
Alien - 20th Century Fox
Raiders of the Lost Ark - Paramount Pictures
Tarzan & His Mate - MGM (at least one of the iterations)
Casablanca - Warner Brothers
Fantasia - Disney
Wizard of Oz - MGM

So as you can see.. many of these movies come from studios other than MGM. (Note: No films from Universal! What a surprise :confused3 :) )

What is interesting is that I think as we near the 20 year anniversary of the opening of Disney-MGM Studios, the original licensing agreements all could very likely require re-negotiation. If that proved to be the case, I think THAT would be a bigger death-knell to the TMGR ride than the name change from MGM.

With all the changing of rights ownership over the years, and the original agreements possibly expiring or requiring re-negotiation.. that could spell trouble to the ride's long term prospects.

Just my opinion.

They need to make it into TGDMR aka The Great Disney Movie Ride....There are so many Disney classic movies and shows that would fill the ride area.:thumbsup2

I graduated from DHS. Dunwoody High School in Georgia. Once their initials are DHS, they invite high school bands with the same initials to play there. Then they could tell their friends they're going to play at DHS.

I'm pretty sure that Disney veterans will continue to call it MGM lol. Which means, any newbies seeking advice from Disney veterans, might also end up calling it MGM......so basically, I don't know how well the name change will stick.

No more MGM (Mickey Gets Money).

They are going to have to change a WHOLE LOT of those purple road signs on Disney World property. Not to mention maps, brochures, guidebooks and the park entrance itself.

Oooh, I hadn't thought of that . . . I wonder how long it'll take them to change ALL those signs around property - plus all the green road signs around the Orlando area.

they can redo the signs on site overnight. at a minimum, it means slapping stickers over the existing signs.

Any idea if they'll have all this new info in the official '08 WDW guidebook (out October 1), or do you think it's all already been printed?

birnbaum? it's technically possible, but probably not. the only guide that might actually have it is the Passporter because they haven't gone to press yet (still in final stages of editing).

But they DO show clips of Universal films- the one that sticks out in my mind is Shrek. I was on the great movie rider and noticed all the universal films they showed.

I just hope they don't completely lose the feeling of being in the golden age of movies. That's why I love MGM!!!!! I love the older music they play on the streets, the street performers, and just that general feel!!! I don't want them to have to update and modernize everything!!!

Im sorry, I just watched the GMR on youtube and didn't see shrek (totally convinced I saw it in real life but then again, I only watched the end of the ride- not the full ride so it may be on it). But they show the Tereminator so they do show Universal films.

John Wayne is "The Searchers" (Warner, Bros.) and I'm pretty sure the Clint Eastwood is "A Fistful of Dollars." It's definitely one of his "Man With No Name" movies (the others being "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," all three distributed by United Artists). I think "A Fistful of Dollars" is shown in the queue area, isn't it?
