MGM Studios has been renamed!!

This change is a long-time overdue IMHO. I'm happier without the MGM name in the name of the theme park.

technically, distribution has nothing to do with licensing/ownership. in the cases of the big studios, it usually is the same, but indiana jones for example is owned by lucasfilm although it's distributed by 20th century fox.

Actually IJ is distributed by Paramount. ;)

I heard George Lucas has some other big franchise that's distributed by Fox, but the name escapes me at the moment. :goodvibes

oops! i'm still trying to wake up :) not sure how i convinced myself it was fox unless some other rinkydink project of lucas i've probably never actually heard of ended up with them.

Disney first anounced some years ago now I forget exactly when, that the contract with MGM was not renewing and they had to change the name, I guess they somehow got a reprieve for a bit, but now they are being forced to change it.
Won't make a shred of difference to the patrons though it will remain MGM and if they were smart would have found a way to keep that name period, must not have a good lawyers as in the old days.

Interesting. Will just take some getting used to:confused3 . I like "Disney Studios " better though, leaving out the Hollywood part.

BTW, I am a firefighter, so to me, DHS = Department of Homeland Security ;)

Hooray for Hollywood!:goodvibes

On the Dis usually when we abbreviate Disney's Animal kingdom, we just call it AK and we also usually just call it Animal Kingdom. I'm pretty sure Disney's Hollywood Studios will just be H.S. or Hollywood Studios (at least that's what I will call it). The kids love the new name. They said Hollywood is a real place and it will feel like they are going there just like when they go to the World Showcase pavillions. They also said it fits the theme perfectly.

I think they gotta stick with "Hollywood". The main avenue is themed around Hollywood, they've got the Brown Derby, etc. etc.

I'm surprised I hadn't seen this info on the Dis but here it is:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Aug. 9, 2007) -- In the Walt Disney World theme park famous for all things Hollywood, it's curtain up on the launch of new attractions, new looks, new breakthrough experiences...

...and a brand-new name.

Disney-MGM Studios will be renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios, effective January 2008, announced Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort.

"The new name reflects how the park has grown from representing the golden age of movies to a celebration of the new entertainment that today's Hollywood has to offer -- in music, television, movies and theater," she said.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I liked the golden age of movies. And these new attractions don't really appeal to me, I'm 20 so the whole pixar thing is just so lame, I love Classic disney.

And high school musical and playhouse disney? Seems like a lot of attention to draw the kiddies..MGM needed a few improvements but personally I don't think this was the way to go...

If it werent for fantasmic, RNR coaster and 50's prime time cafe. I wouldnt go to MGM. But thats just me ;)

But what am I going to call the park now? My family and I always just refer to it as "MGM"!

Also, I like that it was mainly about the golden age of Hollywood. That glamour and style is so much better than what they seem to be infusing in the park now.

Thanks I couldn't believe I was the only one to hear about it! I did a search but nothing came up.

I have to wonder how long everyone will continue to call it MGM!

See, I totally disagree. I think the golden age thing is lame. Universal has the movie studios thing nailed. Pixar is some of the best work to come out of Disney in a long time (Home on the Range anyone?) and a number of Pixar films are going to be permanent Disney classics. Not a big fan of High School Musical though.

I'd much rather see the pixar stuff brought to mgm rather than have them invade MK anyway. But MGM as it is is lame. The whole "golden age of hollywood" thing is kind of 80's. I has lost its luster big time. I think everyone now has their own custom movie slate clacker thing now. Time to move on to something else.

I respect your opinion. Maybe the should do a classic hollywood area? keep everyone happy.

All I'm saying is the majority of ppl my age still watch the classics we grew up with (Alladin, Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King) and I have no doubt pixar is where disney is headed, I've been to disney on ice and the majority of ppl clapped loudest when the incredibles came out.:sad2: But I just think nothing beats classic animation, but I guess it depends what you were brought up with. I do agree with you though about keeping pixar out of MK but I don't think they should leave out the older favorites in their planning as well.

Hee! I think my age is apparent to me. When you say classic Disney, the movies you mention aren't what come to mind for me. I'm thinking oh, 40 years earlier than that. :)

I love the Incredibles, btw. Made me cry. Maybe because I'm a parent with kids near the age of the incredibles kids, or because of some of the marriage struggle themes, I don't know, but I love that movie.

already answered multiple times i think. there were different contacts that governed use of the properties in the parks than with the name. one had nothing to do with the other. tgmr is multiple studios and most it is owned by warner brothers anyway, including the wizard of oz.

tom and jerry (as played in scifi dine in), also owned by warner brothers in the way of turner entertainment.
