Mexican Riviera July 20, 08...Hola Amigos

Haven't had much time to post. My DD7 had her tonsils and adnoids out Thursday so I have been pretty occupied.
Also today was the last day of work (teacher):cool1:

DD7 is slowly starting to eat and my eyes are recovering from LASIK. SOOO glad I did that!

I don't know about everybody else but it feels like I'm getting down to the wire and still have several things to do.:scared1: I need to get with Mother in Law about making FE and my dress for pirate night. I do have all my signs made though.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON!

Sorry about that - I was hoping to catch you so that you knew someone was online. My name is Laura and let me :welcome: you again.

If your totally new to the boards, here's a couple of suggestions. You cannot PM (Private Message) anyone until you have over 10 posts. Your post count is tallied for you and can be found underneath your name. If you look at the left hand side underneath your name you will see the workds - earning your ears, well that simply tells us your new. Once you pass the 10 posts, you can contact anyone you want invidivually by clicking on the name by the post and sending a PM or e-mail.

The quickest way to get those 10 posts is to just tell us a bit about yourself. Break it up among several posts, which as you get into this forum - you may hear the term - "Fluff" thrown around alot - not here as we are still in the learning stages. So fluff your way past 10 posts and then you can get and send PM's.

Tell us if this your first Disney cruise. Several of us, such as myself and Vern, have done various cruises or are Disney enthusiasts and can help you find an answer. Vern, won't really say this but he has worked for the ::MickeyMo in the past. Your among friends so please feel free to ask questions, especially if your new.

Vern and I are in the process of getting organized and trying to set something up, I just don't want to offend anyone and step on anyone's toes. I am usually on late at night but since I've gotten off the ship - I did the Westbound Panama Canal Crossing which brought the Magic to our Port of Long Beach - I say that I warmed her up for us all! :lmao:

Anyway, we want to get this thread moving so that other DIS-sers will have the same opportunity to meet and enjoy our new friendsships. In fact, that is how I met Vern back in 2005 - we sailed on a Mexican Rivera cruise and became friends.

So let us know something about yourself, your ages, your party, your hopes, your expectations for this group, etc. You already expressed interest in the FE so that will be noted and you will get notified soon.

Robin - who started this thread for this sailing has jumped ship ( just kidding Robin! :rotfl2: ) and is actually sailing on the 27th which she boards when we get off. So she takes care of the list on the first page but is no longer sailing with us.

That's ok - she'll have tons of fun on her trip.

Start off by telling us your name and how you came up with it.

Ok as for Fish Extenders - here's some info:

First off, Fish Extenders is a term that was coined by fellow DIS person. I believe she did it on an extended cruise as a method for leaving notes or small gifts or friends could leave gifts or notes for her while she was out of the cabin. I really apologize for the founder as I cannot for the life of me keep her name in my head. It has since grown dramatically and we all owe her some credit for coming up with this novel idea.

What happens is that the Magic has a silver metal fish posted outside your stateroom where the crew members leave your bill if it doesn't fit under the door or any information since they are not supposed to enter your room (except for your stateroom fairy cleaner ;) ) So what she did was hang what is essentially a mail letter organizer which she decorated in Disney motif and hung it on the fish. Voila - she had an instant mail box. So then the idea came up to "distribute" gifts for her friends and it has grown to what is today known as Fish Extender gifts. Many people make their fish extender, but if you are uncoordinate as I am - you can find many patterns or even some on ebay to buy. I even saw a letter organizer at the Dollar Tree store -granted it only had 2 slots but that is really all you need.

People then sign on and agree to deliver one gift, of their choosing per stateroom. Many people have then gone on to change that to one per stateroom guests - but if you've got a large group - and these boards are popular - it can stretch into the hundres. What I do and many others do too, is agree to give one gift per stateroom as most families usually travel together in one stateroom. If there is a case of two repeat cruisers from different addresses in the same cabin, then a note is placed on the cabin door or here on the boards asking for 2 as 2 different addresses are sharing a cabin. You'll be surprised how often this happens.

It is meant to be fun and enjoyable and not meant to break your bank. So what happens is people go all out and get super-creative on their gift. They then chose one day or night on the cruise to deliver their chosen gift. In the past, I gave out a candy roll wrapped in a custom designed wrapper commemorating our cruise dates. Others have given out small bags of candy, some magnets, some a watertight box, its whatever you can afford to give. No one is required to participate, its just a way to have some fun and get to know each other. What makes this fun is that you start looking forward to checking your "fish" hence the term - FISH MAIL. All we ask is that if you chose to participate, please recipercate. You are not required to give, but it is nice.

Their are tons of ideas out there and this is usually done for 7+ nights as the shorter cruises are really too action packed to meet up and get to know others. On the last cruise I did - which was the Panama Crossing where the Magic came over here - some ingenious person gave out small toy binoculars with the crossing dates on them as a momento. Others gave out candy, someone gave out a mouse pad with the thread's logo on it, I gave out a magnet which I placed on the outside of the door, others made buttons and magnets and someone even made up a grab bag for each cabin and placed inside of it, safety pins, thread, needle, buttons, band-aids, tape, etc. Little things that you don't realize you might need. A small note is usually placed on the gift with the name of the giver as a calling card. On one cruise, little rubber duckies dressed as :pirate: was given out. Also, many people, especially from out of the country might give a postcard or something from they are from. I even got a pen and a small keychain from someone in Australia. That was really nice. Your gift can be as elaborate or simple as you want it to be. All that is required is that you participate to have fun.

I do recommend putting your name on your gift that way if someone really likes your gift they can find you and personally thank you. It just makes the cruise a bit more special.

To deliver your gift is not really very difficult. You can deliver them all in one day - it is not really that big a ship and I delivered over 150 gifts in under 1 hr. On one cruise that had over 300 cabins alone I broke it up over 2 nights and did my after dinner walk that way. Some cruises I have been on - the organizer has assigned days to people, and some have chosen to deliver at their will. I don't believe we have that large a group so I would really be surprised to see more than 50 cabins. However, if there is more at the end, the more the merrier I say! This, take it from an experienced fish giver, is nothing. I can deliver fish gifts for this amount in 45 minutes. :rotfl2: OK no one challenge me on this ok! :lmao: I usually take the time to admire the decorated doors too.

What happens is that usually some talented person takes a floorplan and highlights or xeroxes off the rooms with participating Fish cabins and hands them out so that helps everyone out. If all else fails, a list of cabin participants can be handed out. I don't want to step on anyone's toes as I saw that Kveens was starting a list for the FE group, but if you want too, I can continue on from her list and put it into excel. I have some free time now. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: For those that know me - I don't stay settled down for long - the only reason I am on during the day right now is that I am sick from the cruise and am still recovering. :)

If I have totally overwhelmed you, please don't let me scare you off, I tend to type on and on but I can be a wealth of information as I have done over 12 cruises as of June and by the end of this summer - my total will be up to 15. Most of those cruise have been special cruise with only 2 being a 3 day and a 4 day.

So as I posted, if you have any questions, just post them here, you will find that there are others in your same boat with the same questions, just ask and someone will come along and answer them for you soon enough. If that is not quick enough - just pm them and you will get a message saying you have a private message at the top right hand corner. You will then click and you will be whisked away to the private message portion of the DIS where you can answer privately. Ok - hopes this helps and you will join us!

Enjoy!

Hi, Laura :wave2: Thanks for all the great information!

Since you've been on a cruise or two :) , can you tell me if the veranda balcony door opens into the room or out on to the veranda? And if it will stay open by itself or closes automatically? On our last cruise we needed a bungee cord to hold our door open so we could enjoy some fresh air in our room. Just wondered if we should bring it along this time. TIA!

Dany

Thanks so much for your explanation of the Fish Extender....We are new to the FE gift exchange so I am still a little fuzzy on some of the details but you have helped alot. Is our group doing 1 gift per stateroom or are we going to do 1 per family member per stateroom? Or maybe that hasn't been determined yet and I am jumping the gun!:confused3 But since we are 45 days from our MAGICal cruise I want to start getting my ideas in order. I'm not very gifted in the "creative" department so I want to get a jump on things! And I know Vern had asked for suggestions on how often....and we are totally open for whatever, but I guess that is another factor in how many FE gifts I need. This is our 3rd DCL cruise and but unfortunately on the 1st two we didn't know anything about the DISer's and FE...but we are excited to have found the boards and have learned alot! Thanks for all the information and especially thanks for the organization :thumbsup2

Hello Laura Thank You soo much for the information.

Dany - My suggestion is to go ahead and bring your bungee cord. The doors are made to slide shut. When I had a balcony, I would usually put a box in between the jam and door to keep it open a bit.

The door actually slides like a patio door and it is a bit heavy. If it gets very windy, the door may be a bit hard to open. It is not a light door and will be hard for little hands to open. However, not impossible. If your traveling w/o kids, no problem. Be advised though that the recommendation is to keep the doors closed to help keep the room cool. However, I too like you, like fresh air and on the Atlantic side I've kept the door open for a while to give me a fresh breeze but it does tend to make the room a bit humid.

Being here on the Pacific Ocean - it is a bit cooler and unless we're in port - you may want to keep the door closed. If we are sailing slow - use your bungee cord to keep it open.

Also, the cabins are temperature controlled to a point. If the humidity level gets too high - you may find your phone ringing and when you pick up - no one will be on the line. This is a safety measure and automatically linked to the ships controls. If no one answers, then a party is sent out to make sure everyone is ok.

BTW, just FYI - candles are strictly forbidden in the cabin rooms. I know no mention was made of this but I jus thought I'd let you all know. Fire is a big hazard and is taken very seriously. Hence, the restriction on candles.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shetara! I too am from SoCal. Your going to have fun!

Just post your groups info here in a post and I'll incorporate it into an excel sheet for everyone's use later. OK?

If you have any other questions, just ask.

How many in your party and are you all traveling in one cabin or two? May I ask how old your are? Along with the ages of your party?
Thanks

Hi Patsy, ok now its my turn to be a bit confused. I'm a bit unclear on what you mean by groups? Did I miss something? Have groups been assigned? Where? I knew I was sick but lordy - I sure missed a lot!:scared1: :lmao:

Don't mind me - its the antibiotics. But seriously, let me go back and read a bit so maybe I can understand the question, I thought things were still in the planning stages. I believe its up to you to decide on how you want to deliver and when unless it was decided to already.

As I said, I might be a bit dense but what I know about groups is people are assigned to fish group when the FISH participants goes over a large amount. This is a cost efficient way to buy gifts for everyone and it doesn't cost an arm or a leg. On the WB PC we did have both fish groups and individuals handing out gifts. The fish groups were assigned a committee of people who got together, decided on one nice gift - they split the cost and then they took care of delivering their gift. As I said, on the WB, I was on a fish group that bought dry erase boards for every participating FISH cabin. We put a label on the back with the committe members names and then we placed them on the door on an assigned day - ours happened to be the 2nd day. However, keep in mind that we have less than 50 days to sail so these kinds of gifts can get costly and unless you buy wholesale can get a bit expensive.

Places to get inexpensive gifts would be Oriental Trading Company which can be on the web and some poeple get catalogs from them, Dollar Tree stores, 99 Cents stores, etc. Many people can get creative and on one cruise, our tablemates crochet a keychain for her tablemates.

Its all up to you. But it supposed to be fun and not meant to break you. Take a look at the photos I posted a couple of pages back, most of the gifts were from fish group as the gifts amounted to a lot of money. My portion alone for the dry erase board was about $50 which was split among 6-7 women so imagine carrying the cost of that amount by yourself. One party on that cruise made homemade neck tie coolers which she sewed herself with a small poem and this to me was veyr ingenious and a very useful gift.

Hope this helps clear things up a bit further.

BRAVO! BRAVO! Laura, I couldn't have said it better! Okie Dokie Folks Here is what we are doing for the FE's: Laura and I will be putting the list together and assigning a day or night that will be yours for you and your family or stateroom to deliver your gifts to each stateroom. For example: Mickey & Minnie 1st night, Donald & Daisy 2nd day, Goofy & Pluto 3rd day... and so on. And if you want to you can do extra gifts other days or nights. Laura and I talked this afternoon about this. ( sidebar: Keep Laura in your prayers she is really fighting this flu. I felt bad in calling her, cause she is not feeling well.) Get Well My Friend!

Any questions anyone? Just post or PM me or email vrntnns@verizon.net Vern

:wave2: Everyone -

I hope I don't offend anyone or hurt anyone's feelings but may I make a suggestion to help us familiarize ourselves?

May I suggest that you incorporate into your signature or at the bottom of your post your name? Or nickname? I sometimes have a hard time remembering and as some of you will undoubtedly become DIS addicts, you'll find that your hooked and visiting other threads, especially if you rebook on board to get that extra 10% discount or stateroom credit. :cool1: After two or three threads - they all run together and your forgetting real names. You'll find that if you run into someone on the ship, you will be calling them by their DIS name instead of their real name. Some people don't mind but I personally would like a real name to place with your DIS name.

If your not sure what I mean, take a look at my signature and you will see my name - Laura. Or as Dany did - she posted her name at the end of her post. This helps us old geezers place DIS names to real names.

Its ok if your not sure yet but really, join in and don't worry about us - we are not really as crazy as we seem. My DH (dear/disney husband) thinks I'm nuts talking here on the forum but when I get onboard, I know so many people that he wonders where I have meet them.

Have fun, join in and throw caution to the wind - your in for a blast.

;)

Shetara and any other newbies around lately.

Here is another suggestion that was tossed around on one of my early cruises. As some of you may come to find out, the rooms aren't really all that big. They are bigger than the standards in the cruise industry but still, if you have more than 3 people to a room, space gets cramped.

My Suggestion? Invest a few dollars in a cheap or not so cheap, if you prefer, over the door shoe holder - I bought mine at the dollar store. Then when that one went kaput - I bought a $10 clear vinyl one from Tar-jay (Target). What this does is create some extra storage space for you to place in a "slot" an item which would otherwise clutter up the desktop portion of your cabin. I carry a clear vinyl with over 16 pockets. I usually hang it from one of the bathroom doors and I place an item that I will be using almost every day there so that I can access it readily. For instance, if each family member has a brush - and face it - who want to share their hair brush with the gel kid? :rotfl2: So we place our brushes in here, toothbrushes & toothpaste which would otherwise clutter up the shelf on the bathroom sink. I also place our sunblock lotion in here so that everyone knows where to put it back and is not lost somewhere in the clutter of the room. I suggest getting the ones with the hangers for over the door - the width of the metal "hook" is just wide enough to fit over the bathroom doors or the room door. Clear vinyl works best as you won't have to go searching each pocket if they are not clear. Also, if your short, you don't have to go hopping up and down to see what is in the top pockets.

Other uses include putting a first aid kit here, hair clips, pens, tape, anything that would take up the drawer space that you will be putting your clothes into. As I said, when you get 3 or more to a room, you start fighting for a place to put your clothes and those clutter magnets are the first to suffer. If anyone is like me - the more clutter - the more frazzled I am. This is not to say that I don't get frazzled - I do it just helps to find the sunblock when I really need it. Oh yeah, great place to store contact lens solution and disposable cameras, camera batteries, etc. I do not suggest getting the one that hold 36 pairs of shoes - that may be too long the doors are a bit smaller than normal size doors so you have to get one that fits accordingly. The shelves in the bathrooms are not that big and they tend to clutter up with just one or two things on them.

OK - done preaching.......for now! :rotfl: Be back on later - got to find the girls who took my furr kids out for a walk and have been gone a bit too long. One of my furr kids is an escape artist and I need to go check on them.

Take care - be back later - post any questions here or PM Vern or myself. (VERN, PM Vern) Sorry Vern - I am on respite.

For those that don't know - I will be escorting my youngest DD to the National Youth Leadership Conference to be held in Washington D.C. on June 14 and she refuses to let me fly back home so I will be in Washington D.C. from June 14 till the 25th, just in time to celebrate my oldest son's birthday and the nation's birthday in the first part of July. As for my oldest dd - she will be accompanying me and we will be finding our way around the nation's capital by ourselves. Wish us luck.

Hence my comment earlier - I am never laying still for long around here. :lmao: Is that an understatement Vern or what?

Later folks

Welcome, Shetara. :welcome: This thread and the whole board are a lot of fun so enjoy yourself!

Laura, thanks again. Funny how it never even crossed my mind that the veranda door would be a slider, but that's great because it takes less room space (which it appears will be at a premium in any case). I've already got my shoe holder 'cuz I hate a cluttered room too!

Dany

OK guys to give credit where credit is due - the lady that originated the Fish Mail was a DIS-ser named Epctkilter - AKA Debbie so if you ever come across that name - be sure to thank her for her wonderful and amazing idea! :thumbsup2

Here is some fixes for motion sickness... just thought that it would help if anyone was thinking about it. 45 days out:cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Consumer Reports' ShopSmart: Motion Sickness Fixes

The following is an article featured in the July 2008 issue of ShopSmart.

Don't let a queasy stomach ruin your next cruise, road trip, or flight. The July issue of ShopSmart, from the publisher of Consumer Reports - which hit newsstands Tuesday, May 20 -- has tips on what to do when motion sickness hits.

What to bring along when you take to the road this summer, so you can enjoy your lunch -- and avoid losing it:

First, try these: GINGER AND WRISTBANDS Although far from proven, these are safe and worth a shot, especially for mild symptoms. Ginger root, typically sold in candies and capsules, has the most supporting evidence. Occasional use of up to 250 milligrams four times a day is considered safe for most people, including women who might be
pregnant. Bracelets such as Sea-Bands, found at drugstores, stimulate acupressure points on the wrist and have been shown to combat nausea in some situations. The evidence that they work against motion sickness is mixed. However, they're safe and can be used along with other remedies.

Next, try this: ANTIHISTAMINES
Older over-the-counter antihistamines such as dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl) have been proven to counteract motion sickness and are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use by children older than 2. The catch is that they take 30 minutes to an hour to kick in, and they can leave you feeling drowsy or light-headed. Newer, non-sedating over-the-counter antihistamines such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec p) might relieve allergy symptoms but don't appear to quell a queasy stomach.

If all else fails, try: PRESCRIPTION DRUGS Promethazine (Phenergan) is another antihistamine effective at relieving nausea, but it might make you sleepy. Another choice is prescription strength meclizine (Antivert), although it, too, may cause drowsiness. A scopolamine patch (Transderm-Scop) is also very effective, but side effects including blurred vision and severe drowsiness make it a treatment of last resort. Some patients also report a rebound effect, including nausea, dizziness, and headaches when they remove the patch.

How to nip that queasy feeling in the bud:

Eat stomach-soothing foods. Have a light meal about 3 hours before setting out. Avoid dairy products and foods that are high in protein or sodium. A light breakfast of an orange, for example, may stay down better than bacon and eggs. If motion sickness strikes, munch on
crackers and take small sips of a carbonated drink or fruit juice. Chew on ginger candies or pop a ginger supplement. Chamomile and peppermint are also used to quell stomach upset.

Get the best seat. Pick the spot least affected by motion-up front in a car, over a wing on a plane, or midship on a boat deck.

Avoid nausea triggers. These include alcohol, cigarette smoke, and pungent odors. The power of suggestion is strong, so if possible, stay far away from other sick passengers.

Focus your mind. If you can, lean into your headrest to minimize movement and focus on the horizon or a distant object. Don't read or watch movies. If you're queasy, close your eyes and recline until the feeling passes.

Get some air. Crack a window, turn on a vent, or step out on a ship's deck to get some soothing fresh air.

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted. Welcome to all the new people:dance3: . It is so great to learn that more people will be joining the FE. We are planning on dropping of a couple of treats through out the cruise. I originally thought that each group would go out two or three times, so that is what I have planned for at this time. It has been fun looking for fun and creative things.

One thing. Does anyone scrapbook? Just wondering if anyone else has that addiction too...:)

We still have not planned any of our excurstion yet, however one of our friends was on the Repo and loved the Baja thing. My husband will probably do that.:moped:

We also have a reservation for Palo on the last night late. We really only go for the dessert..which is to die for:faint: but we are not into some of the food they offer. I have a terrible mushroom allergy and it seems like everything is cooked with it! So I have to be very careful. I really enjoyed the Brunch....not a tea drinker but the scones and sandwiches were wonderful. I haven't been able to make this res. is anyone doing this? Is it not available for our cruise? Maybe a group of us want to get together and do this.

Have we decided when to meet the first day? I think sometime around the sail away party..maybe before. We always like to watch the ship pull out of port and the channel from the front of the ship. All the times (3) we have had a dolphin escort. Really cool. Anyone know what the set up is in LA?

Sorry to ramble but I feel so out of the loop..plus I am trying to procrastinate other things I should be doing:duck:

Until next time!!!!

Karma--yes this is my name:banana:

:wave2: Karma - seems that the Palo thing is a reocurring nightmare. On the repo - many people could not get it. Then booking here same thing. It looks like the best thing to do is hightail into Rocking Bar D once you board and ask for a reservation that way. Hint, the earlier you get there the better. I have a friend sailing this Sunday, I can ask her when she gets back how the 7-day has been running.

Anyway, in regards to Cabo, may I suggest you have a back-up plan just in case the power that be are not cooperating? I know when we pulled into Cabo on the repo, we were scheduled for a 9:30 excursions only to have the 3rd party operators cancel all water excursions due to the water conditions.

So please be aware of that and have a 2nd and 3rd choice in waiting.

Hope this helps - your all going to have fun!

Thanks for the heads up. I am always worried to schedule excursions outside of Disney because of those problems that can come up but sometimes we can get a better price. I am just having a hard time doing any excursions...maybe I will just hire a taxi and do our own thing:confused3 .

Thanks again for the info!
