Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 09/2009

Bethany, I can bring you to the sugar cane.. it isn't THAT far.. nor is it THAT interesting.... IMHO, the pictures really do do it justice.

Yea, I'd have to second that. I know in Raceland it gets pretty messy. And you end up getting stuck behind the large trailers carrying the cane to the mill, and it takes forever to get around them :lmao:. And while I can't remember if there's any smell to the cane itself, the mill processing produces a smell like nothing you've ever smelled before. :scared1:

Not all sugar cane is the old fashioned peel and suck kind:rotfl:. I thought it was all the same too but it isn't. The cane he grows has to go to a mill to get be processed.:(

:faint: There are different kinds. :headache:

That is what I wondered?!!! I had NO idea.

The only kind I remember was on the side of a road, my dad picked a peice, cut it around the sides and in 4 pieces for us to suck on. It was like sugared soft bark! My family worked on one ages ago. Hey maybe THAT was what we did when they lived on Evergreen Plantation! Remember I told you my dads side used to live on Evergreen, but weren't the wealthy owners?

I need to find out this info!

Do ya'll use the mill in Raceland? Just love driving by that place this time of year. Such a "lovely" aroma :lmao:.

No, they have a mill in Thibodaux, Lafourche Sugars.

:faint: There are different kinds. :headache:

It looks like a cross between corn and grass. :confused3 Now I want to go out there and see it in real life. What's it sound like when the wind blows through it? What's it smell like? Who's up for a road trip?!? :rotfl:

It does look like very tall grass. It really doesn't make any noise when the wind blows through it. It has no smell while it's growing. When it's at the mill, it has a strong, musty, too sweet smell.

:hug:I hope your refi goes through soon. We went through a "How will we pay the bills?" at one time. I can identify with the lack of sleep over that.

Kat, still praying for Kyle.

Good morning. It is so beautiful outside today.:goodvibes

We got back in town late last night. We had the best time in WDW!

I loved the Food and Wine Fest and would love to go back again:lovestruc

It was a different experience, going without our kids, but really fun. Some things we would do and I would really miss them, other things I was kinda glad they weren't there because they would have been bored.

I loved, loved, loved eating and drinking around the world. My favorite was the Cork, Ireland booth. We ate the lobster and fisherman's pie paired with Bunratty honey meade--delicious. I liked the honey meade, it was a little too sweet for DH though. My husband loved the France and Cape Town, So. Arica booth, seared beef tenderloin with sweet potato puree and mango BBQ sauce.

I'll post some pictures later.

Ya'll have a good day.

I have a story to share! Lorie vs. the Big Raccoon
:scared1: Sorry for the goldfish loss. I can't believe you were able to go back inside & back to sleep! I would've been soooo keyed up, I would've met DH at the door! No more coon hunting with out your "eyes" in, though, OK??

If anyone has a prayer to spare, Kyle's baseball try-out is tomorrow at 4:00. He asked me to ask everyone I know to say a prayer.:flower3:
P&PD on the way!

Do ya'll use the mill in Raceland? Just love driving by that place this time of year. Such a "lovely" aroma :lmao:.
That's the smell of $$$$ - well, it used to be. DDad just retired as manager of a 1000 acre cane farm, so I know all about grinding season. I grew up just a couple of miles down the bayou (ahem..down wind) from the Raceland mill. Yep, the aroma's pretty special! :rolleyes1

The aroma I do love, and associate with this time of year, is the smell of the burning cane. Yeah, not so wonderful for people with allergies, respiratory issues, or those that don't like the smoke & ash, etc., so thankfully it's not needed as much anymore, but I do love that sweet, smoky smell.

It does look like very tall grass.
Because it is a grass!

zipuzee - Just had a "duh" moment, and the brain clicked when you mentioned driving through Raceland. I never "saw" your last name in your screen name until now! Do you have relatives on the bayou?

Mary - My favorite part of F&W is cruising the booths too! Two that you mentioned are on my "must-try" list, Ireland & South Africa. Can't wait to see your pics!:goodvibes

Mary - glad you had a good time. Bob and I enjoyed our last trip, our first without kids, but not our last. Course, they are all grown up now and on their on (for the most part):cool1:. We enjoyed the F&W Fest so much that I'm not sure that we'll ever go again at a different time. Course, when the day comes and I have grandkids, that will change!

Kristina - I'm sorry that the refi is still dragging around. I know your situation well, unfortunately and understand what its like waiting for help you know is there, but just out of reach. I hope relief will finally come soon.

We do indeed! While DH's parents' lived here in the metro area for as long as I've known, his aunts, uncles, etc. are all down the bayou. We used to go down there all the time, but don't make trips anywhere as much as we used to. Unfortunately, the last few have been for funerals. So if you know any Uzee's or Foret's, sure bet its a relation. Interestingly enough, when DS chose a college, he went to Southeastern in Hammond, where he met his wife. Happens that she grew up in Houma, so they were spending a lot of time down that way. They still go down there, but her parents recently moved to St. Tammany to be closer to their kids and grandkids.

Lorie, I just read your raccoon story:rotfl2: I was laughing at the image, but raccoons can be mean. Please be careful.

Kristina:hug:

Kathy, please let us know how Kyle does. I will be praying for him.

Also Kathy, you won't be dissapointed with those two booths. Just thinking of all that delicious food has me wanting to go back.

Hey y'all,

Gosh I'm having a hard time keeping up!

Bethany, You are too funny!

I've had two DUH moments reading this morning. I didn't know there was more than one kind of sugarcane! When we went to visit family down there, we'd just walk out to the field & someone would hack off a stalk & split for all the kids.

Unfortunatly we don't visit anymore, too many funerals & time has passed. I do still have some cousins & two aunts in Thibodaux but that's it. :sad1:

It's funny but thinking about that nasty smell from the mill, brings back such good memories! As kids the drive from Westwego to Raceland or Thibodaux seemed like forever. But we knew we were close when we smelled that smell. Lots of cousins & fun outdoor play plus great food! I can smell it all now first the bad, then the good smells from my Aunt's kitchen! Mmmm gumbo & pap pies!:cloud9:

Another big DUH! I know Lauri's last name but never realized it was in her tagname!! :upsidedow I wondered what zipuzee meant?!! Gosh I'm slow.:sad2:

Kathy, I'll be praying for Kyle today! :flower3:

Kristina,:hug: I'm sorry the financing hasn't gone through yet. I'm praying for you friend.:flower3:

Mary, WELCOME HOME!!!!:goodvibes I'm so glad you enjoyed the F&W Fest! We love Bunratty Meade, I have a bottle in our bar. Both of those dishes you mentioned are new this year, I can't wait to try them! I'm so excited now about our trip!

:yay: Reading Lori's TR & now hearing about F&W!!! Yippeee, woohoo!!! :dance3:

Hi ladies. I too can attest that the smell of the sugar cane mills is aweful...There is one in St. James on the river road as well. I think it closed then reopened again. I also hated being caught behind those DARN SLOW tractors. :headache:

When my DH and I first started dating he thought the sugar cane fields were corn fields....he was from NOLA and evidently had never seen a cane field before. :rotfl:

Mary glad you are home and you and your DH enjoyed yourselves.

Kristina  to you. It will get better.

Hey all!

What a beautiful day! We have the doors and windows open and I'm loving it!

Sheryl, I didn't know Bunratty Meade even existed. EPCOT can be very educational:)

ok, all you couples with older kids who go to WDW every F&W fest!!! I am looking forward to "those days" with my hubby!
It sounds fun!!

Paul wants to go back to DL just me and him again........but not any time soon.

Well, I got lots of Christmas shopping done this past weekend- got the kids a Wii-it was on sale for $199 at various places- it'll be a family gift from Santa, plus I'll throw some stuff in thier stockings. I did buy the extra remote thingy. See how much i know about games? I have NO idea what all the gamey language is or what games are cool to go with it. I am getting 1 extra game and my mom will get them one. Any games any of you with a Wii really LOVE???

Lori

Sheryl - Do you know if they show the LSU games at Gretna Fest? We may have a problem now.:sad2:

Tim and I stayed at the Bunratty Castle Hotel in Ireland! That was in 2000 on our second honeymoon. We had the best prawns in the restaurant. There's a mock up of an ancient Irish village behind the castle. At the Potter's Shop, I bought myself a butter dish. My housekeeper broke it. That was the one thing she broke that broke my heart. One day maybe Tim and I can return so that I can replace it.
