Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 03/2009

Lori, great looking car:thumbsup2

Happy Birthday Tricia (arminnie):cool1:

kmores - are you still out there? Feel up to sharing some advice? IIRC, you have some experience with karate / tkd / martial arts with DH. My oldest is showing interest in lessons, and I'm wondering if you had any references in the BR / Gonzales / Prairieville area. If not, any tips on what to look for in a reputable school? This is totally new territory for me, and I'd really appreciate some guidance.

Kathy - How'd the weekend go? All settled in? Thought about you when I read the headlines about swine flu hitting Sorority Row. As if y'all didn't have enough to worry about already! Hope it all went smoothly.

hey gal - I am still out here...had a lot going on and was busy out of town this weekend, then getting miss g ready for school...

I think that price is a factor, but cheapest isn't always the best. i have a friend up there who used to run a school - i will ask him for you...it is hard to determine how "good" a school is. many of them are happy to take your money, but there are registration fees, tuition monthly, uniforms to buy, sparring gear, and belt fees are some of the fees that add up quickly. get him to try a class out. if they refuse, something is wrong. many will try to get you into a 1 or 2 year contract, betting that (like most of us who try gym memberships) that you probably won't stay the whole time. however, they will get your money long after your little guy tires of the experience. that is what they bank on....so try to find out the exact amount of everything before you get into it.

I'm not sure what they're talking about, he said they turned the dishwasher on yesterday and it stunk. The shower water too.....:confused3

I'd love to be hired as house mother.:upsidedow

He mentioned "Walk On's" for lunch, know anything about it?

it smells like eggs in some places. i used to have a convention in BR every summer - i wouldn't wash my hair the whole time i was there. i still call it "egg water"

ooh Kat makes me want to drive up there with you! (shrimp monica)

:wizard:..... so the rules to stay in your kids life during college are FOOD, food, and more food-and not only that, GOOD home cooked meals....hmmmm, I better learn to cook a little better then!!

WHy does our pain make our kids laugh???? Ash laughs at me if I tear up over something she does, says, or whatever. Haley seems to get it right now! She'll come give me a hug.

I am now having 4 extra kids over!!

Lori
heck Kat = you can adopt me and I will come over for your food! (grayce can be your niece ;) )
dropping off money also helps....mom would hand me a $20 and say "don't tell your dad!"..then along comes dad with another $20 "don't tell your mom!"
Lori - I'm bummed you had to spill the beans on the trip secret, but I think you will enjoy the trip anticipation even more WITH the girls than the stress of keeping it a secret. Were they on to you at all? I know you suspected it.

Serena - I'm glad to hear her first day went so well!

Kathy - I know you were worried about what your role would be once Kyle left home, but it sounds like you're finding your niche JUST FINE! And I'm NOT surprised it involves food! :rotfl:

We have had 6 days spent mostly in meetings; we have two more days before the kids come on Thursday. This morning we started out the day with Crisis Management (Ya know, school policies for things like hurricane evacuations, tornado warnings, fire drills, lockdowns, etc...). :headache: Nothing like 9am on a Monday "ARE YOU PREPARED?!?....Did you SEE this weekend how fast a storm formed in the gulf?!?" uhhhhhhh yeah... continued with "Do you KNOW what's down the road a bit? How about FURTHER down the road? Have you SMELLED the swamp?!? You don't need to report smelly air. That is NOT an emergency." :lmao::lmao:
Lori can't believe your trip is so soon! Bethany - I am glad to see you can find the humor in any situation! and it would be interesting for New York to get the first hurricane of the season....

Happy Birthday Tricia!!!!:bday:

Glad to see you back Kristina, I'd be happy to adopt y'all.;)

Now, I know it is the wrong DAY, but we had RB&R this past weekend at a friends, so having it Monday was out for us. I had it in my plans for this week so it has been cooking all day long. I found a ham hock and sued that for the 1st time(usually use a leftover hambone). I am not sure how much I am in the mood for it since we JUST had it, but it smells godd and I am making cornbread with it. It was just too easy to make with 6 kids running rampant most of the day here!

Lori

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRICIA!!!
I hope it's a good one!

Kristina, It's good to see you here! I've been missing you. How is your pretty daughter? All ready for school?

Lori, I wasn't in the mood for beans yesterday either. :confused3. Something must be wrong with me. I cooked "beer can" chicken yesterday, but Beer Can Chicken Monday JUST AIN'T RIGHT!

Lori

Hey Y'all,

It's the last day of summer for us. School starts tomorrow. :sad1:
Thanks for asking. We found out that she got the teacher we were hoping for!! Last year when it snowed they wouldn't let the kids step off the walkays ( I'm guessing insurance issues) Well this teacher took each student outside (individually) & took thier picture out in the snow. We are going to try putting her on the bus this year. She is scared about that, her Mom spoke to the bus driver & she seemed very nice too. So we're hoping that goes well.

I hate the last day of summer vacation:( I'm glad she got the teacher she wanted. That can make the biggest difference in a child having a fantastic year.

ya THINK he coulda took one a little closer!!

A boy and his toys!:rotfl: It's a very cute car.

Happy Birthday Tricia! :dance3:

Someone has to explain it to Piglets... :rotfl2: I have no more home improvement projects in the works for now.. thank goodness. We got a brand new roof a month before Katrina.. so you are so right about being storm magnets.

:rotfl2: At least they didn't bring scratch and sniff stickers... could you imagine?

School starts on Thursday so I took my boys to Wal-mart for new shoes today. Usually I buy brand name shoes for them... but they asked to go to Wal-mart because they saw the shoes they wanted in the Sunday circular. $22 and two pairs of shoes later.. they were happy boys. I will admit that you will see Fletcher coming a mile away... he insisted on LIME green and gray shoes.

Yeah, I need some help....:rotfl:

Ewwww to scratch and sniff stickers. One (or more? all?) of the places I lived had electric and natural gas run by the same company. About once a year they would send out a scratch and sniff paper for natural gas.

I'm looking forward to seeing these shoes you speak of...:lmao:

Yeah, planning meetings are a little bit different here, huh? But, really, 6 days with 2 more to go??? Just how much is there to discuss? I'd be meeting-ed out. I'm hoping they're worth your while, unlike the colored dots lecture you had last semester!

Yeah, there are a lot of meetings. Most of them are productive, because you only go to the ones that apply to you. There is a schedule of "breakout sessions" on specific topics, and they are about an hour or so long each. Only a handful of them were for the whole staff. Otherwise we have been doing preparation or planning, and there is PLENTY of that to do!

And :rotfl2::rotfl: about the dots. I'd forgotten about that meeting! :lmao:

Thanks for asking. We found out that she got the teacher we were hoping for!! Last year when it snowed they wouldn't let the kids step off the walkays ( I'm guessing insurance issues) Well this teacher took each student outside (individually) & took thier picture out in the snow. I hope the rest of the meetings were more productive!

Awww, that is sweet about taking the kids out in the snow. :goodvibes It sounds like she CARES, which from what you said about the other teacher, I'm not so sure.

Oh, that meeting was sort of productive too...aside from the crisis topic being mandated annually (I believe), I suppose it IS important for the staff to know what to do in an emergency. It was the presentation that was a little....funny.

SOoooooo, anyone else enjoying the Hannah Montana movie tonight?

SOoooooo, anyone else enjoying the Hannah Montana movie tonight?

No, my DD15 saw the movie and loved it when it was at the theatres. She'll probably get it for Christmas.

I just got back from walking the dogs. Jackson, my sheltie, is kinda overweight. I took him to the vet today for his yearly checkup and he is a whopping 36 lbs!! I am now giving him the light dog food and walking him twice a day. I know I should have been doing this all along, but its just so darn hot outside.

Happy Hump day ladies....

Lori - DD hasn't asked for the DVD yet. We saw it in the theatre as well.

Shovan - I'm glad DD got the teacher she wanted....I agree it makes all the difference.

DD is trying to get used to having a locker and actually learning how to use the locker. She is having a bit of trouble though. She said it is a mad house trying to run from class to class especially when its across the campus.

OM Goodness FloraFauna 36 lbs....what you been feeding Jackson???

Lockers take some getting used to from what I remember. Rie just carried her books in a backpack because she was worried about getting to class late.

Rie is still sick. She has been on an antibiotic and got a steroid shot on Monday. She came down last night and slept with me because her chest was hurting- Tim slept on the sofa, poor thing. I hope she doesn't have bronchitis but I have a bad feeling. Rie has missed school Friday, Monday, and now today. This afternoon , I'll go to get notes from a friend that I can copy.

Julie, I hope Rie feels better soon:hug:

Terry, lockers are tough to get used to. I had nightmares about using them and getting to my classes on time:scared1: She'll get into the swing of things, though. This younger generation catches on to stuff faster than we did:thumbsup2

Jackson is a big boy. He also likes to lay around a lot. I felt bad making him walk outside with all that fur and all the heat. But things have to change. I was feeding him ProPlan (which is what he has been eating since he was a puppy). Now, he is eating Science Diet Light.

Today was the 1st day of FIRST GRADE! :sad1: I need a crying smiley. Chris took off the day & brought her here to catch the bus. But the bus was late, so Chris put her in the car to take her to school. As soon as Bob & I closed the door & walked to the kitchen, I heard a bus. I ran outside, but the bus was already rounding the corner & she was on it. Chris said Alexis so the bus coming & started screaming "Stop the car! That's the bus!" She said she stopped & the child unbuckled & jumped out into the street! Luckily not in front of the bus! I'm sad I missed it, but she said she was excited & happy. Chris followed the bus to school to meet the teacher, carry the very large bag of school supplies & go to church with her. I told Chris I'd come to church, only to realize I haven't driven yet with that darn neck collar! I decided the 1st day of school was not the best time to try it.

I need to try that! I never have but have seen those doohickeys you put the can in and chicken on-do you use that?
Lori

Lori, I do have one but couldn't find it without digging through too many heavy pots & pans, so I did it without. I've been fixing it for a few years now, & never needed the can holder to do it. You just prop up the chicken on the can & with it's legs. I did it on the grill, but I've also fixed in the oven, placing the chicken on a pan to catch the drips. They come out so good, crispy skin & juicy inside!

I hate the last day of summer vacation:( I'm glad she got the teacher she wanted. That can make the biggest difference in a child having a fantastic year.

We always have spaghetti Mondays. I don't where it comes form but it's easy! Yesterday, I made shrimp spaghetti.

I hope she has a good year too! Spaghetti Mondays? Isn't the reason for redbeans Mondays was because Mondays were laundry days, so a meal that cooked slow & long was best for harried housewives? So spaghetti fills the bill also. Spaghetti shrimp? Do you use the same kind of sauce as regular spaghetti?

Gosh Bethany, The school sounds really together! Are you sure you're not dreaming??

I do think this teacher will be good, she has a son in the same grade as Alexis.

SOoooooo, anyone else enjoying the Hannah Montana movie tonight?

Oh dear, I guess I should record it.

Wow 36lbs! My cousin's little pomeranian had gotten overweight & the vet had her change to light food, cut back on portions & replace it with canned green beans! I had never heard of that before, but her dog loves the green beans & he's taken off those extra lbs!

Happy Hump day ladies....

Terry, Isn't she in 5th grade? That must be tough & kind of scary for her. I remember going to a new school in 6th grade, changing classes & running to the locker. I was scared to death those 1st couple of weeks!

I'm so sorry she's still sick & missing school! I hope that steroid kicks in today & she starts feeling better! Prayers for that. :flower3: What did the dr say she has?

Awe  to you my friend. This is definately the week for heart strings being pulled. :sad1:

Yes DD is in 5th grade...I too thought this was early since most schools have lockers in 6th. :confused3

I remember how challenging it was for me and I was in 7th grade. Hugs & prayers for Aly.

Poor Rie, continued prayers for her.

Not feeling well today, I'm pretty sure I'm just missing my boy.:sad1:
