Membership extras for resale purchasers

I am a current resale owner and my daughter is considering a resale purchase. Does the current year change in discounts available to new resale purchasers include the ability to purchase the Disney Gold Pass annual pass and Tables in Wonderland?

Neither of these are accurate. Resale purchasers after 4/4 are not eligible for "Membership Extras." That includes "certain" discounts. Unfortunately, there is no definitive list of what those discounts include.

My understanding is that the Gold Pass discount is a "Membership Extra," and not available to a recent resale purchaser. The Table In Wonderland card does not seem to fall into that category. I believe all members are still able to purchase the TiW card.

Not sure what was inaccurate about my post.

But regarding the TIW card -- it is available to only Florida residents, annual passholders, and DVC members. I'm not certain that post 4/4 resale purchasers are considered "members" eligible for TIW.

Has anyone with a post 4/4 purchase gotten TIW yet? I would've been in that category, but we added on 25 points direct to make sure we got access to TiW and the AP discount. When I talked to the CM on the phone, he did say that TiW wasn't available to new resale purchasers -- however, it is possible he might have been lying or was misinformed. I guess we won't know for sure until someone tries it out.

I think there is a lot of disinformation being put out there by DVC. You won't find a lot of things in writing on the website about post 4/2016 resale purchases, so you have to rely on what the CM's are saying.

The guides have shown a distressing tendency to tell people stuff that is undoubtedly untrue, like how resale won't be able to switch at 7 months and will be perma-restricted to home resort.

Gold pass is definitely excluded per the membership extras disclosure. Not sure on TIW but you could find out with a quick call to TIW: "... call (407) 566-5858 (Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. EST)"

Only the travel size board games though. Need to buy direct to use the full size sets.

Disney Vacation Club is doing a second iteration of DVC resale restrictions on “incidental benefits”, which will be effective April 4, 2016. In summary, this change in incidental benefits states, “new purchasers of Disney Vacation Club® ownership interests not purchased directly from Disney Vacation Development, Inc. will not have access to Membership Extras, including Member discounts on dining, shopping, Member-exclusive events, and certain special Membership offers, as well as Disney and Concierge Collection options, already restricted for secondary market purchasers as of March 21, 2011.” It is important to note that access to Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake Tower (for a Member staying at WDW), pool hopping privileges and no nightly rental fee for DVDs will still be accessible to all members. In addition, core Disney Vacation Club Membership privileges such as Home Resort Priority and use of other Disney Vacation Club Resorts will remain unchanged. All DVC Members will still be able to book stays through RCI and Buena Vista Trading Company.

The main impact of this will be for any new Member joining DVC via resale on or after April 4, 2016 (and for those whose only contract is through resale and was not closed and recorded prior to 4/4/2016) as those Members who already have a contract purchased, closed and recorded prior to April 4, 2016 whether direct or resale will still be unaffected. However, will this negatively impact the value for all Members’ contracts? This answer really depends on whether the buying public believe this restriction on “incidental benefits” makes a difference, and if so, how much of a difference?

I understood TIW to be a "special membership offer" -- which means post 4/4 would not be eligible.

Based on everything they took away, I do not see why TIW would be available. The only work around is to buy an AP -- but if you're going to buy an AP to get access to TIW, you might as well get a 25 point add-on so you can get all the other benefits, including the discount for the APs. It gives you access to the $549 AP, which is quite a bit cheaper than the $749 platinum pass. If you are a family of four (and were going to buy APs), that's $800 savings right there...which is equivalent to getting a $32 per point discount on the small add-on...and that's just after one year.

I know you didn't ask this question but I'll offer one bit of advice. If your daughter is hung up on the perks, have her buy the bulk of her points resale and then purchase a 25-pt add-on contract direct from DVC. That is sufficient to gain access to the perks. It will obviously cost more than buying all points resale, but likely far less than a direct purchase.

My guess is that Disney has instructed CM's that a blue member card must be presented to obtain discounts or benefits. TOTWL is DVC only so any card will do and they still want their $95 and they are under contract so exchanges are included for all members. Pool hooping is becoming more restrictive and they are taking away the DVD players from the rooms so any member can rent the DVD's, they just can't always play them.

My feeling is that they are looking at the small direct sales to determine if they are happy with the amount of money made verses the work involved and how all of these small contracts are affecting reservations. I expect that a new minimum purchase requirement is coming.

Not having interest in TIW, I think it comes down training and intent. TIW says you need a DVC membership card and photo ID at a Guest Relations outlet.

Do they care what color the card is? We don't know.

Similarly, showing the member card st restaurants and other locations... how much training is the average CM getting on "THIS DVC card is good, and THIS one is bad and nooooOOoooo?"

Given that CMs at resorts can't even get transportation schedules right, I think expecting effective training in DVC member card colors is optimistic at best.

I think "Non-members" will get no discounts at all, seems to be supported by the letter that @Karabear15 posted.

Disney information and policies are frequently contradictory or unclear. For instance, on tablesinwonderland.com: "If you are a Disney Vacation Club Member, visit any Guest Relations location at a Walt Disney World® Theme Park or Disney Springs™ to purchase your Tables in Wonderland membership. Please present your Photo ID and your DVC Membership Card."

However, I simply called and ordered it over the phone and they sent it to me by mail. Thus, I never did show my blue card. Now I do have one, but I'd be a little surprised if TIW has electronic access to membership status data. But then again, maybe they do. I have no idea what happens or what is done between my call and receiving the TIW cards in the mail.

Does anybody want me to call and ask? Don't think I won't do it!!

The capture that I posted is the legalese that came along with that letter. It's common for Disney to use overarching language that leads you to believe one thing, while the actual specifics are much more nuanced.
