I keep making the same mistake. I talk about WDW and upcoming trips with co-workers and family members (except for my bride who's in deep like me :hyper2: ).
It's like swatting a beehive. Why are you going back there? Aren't you sick of it? It's soooo expensive. How many times are you going to ride the giraffe ride?
I should know better by now :sad2: It just happened again today.

My wife and I have traveled to different locals (Pacific NW, CO Ski Trips, etc) and it was great but as far as a resort goes we don't think you can beat 42 square miles of Walt's Disney World. The availibility of things to do (or not do) and the quality is to good to resist.

They just don't get it, and I know you all do. How many of you play your DVC and your Disney fandom close to the chest?
Thank Gang,
Mark

We do NOT play our DVC and Disney addiction close to the vest. Some of our friends "get it" and some don't. The ones who do are usually happy to be invited along to enjoy our DVC too! ;) We even have had friends "get it" enough to purchase their own DVC contract! The ones who don't "get it" never will, but I can't help bringing it up to them anyway, because I like to needle people! :teeth:

I have been going to WDW since the early 70's (grandmother then) - so we got teased alot - but after I brought DVC - the teasing almost ended - like now that I own DVC I just gotta go anyway.

some people understand it - the others just don't - I think they are jealous....

I dont think I really talk to people about it that dont already "get" it. lol Maybe its a self-defense move :rotfl:

I love it, and my family (excluding immedite, DW, DS, DD) doesn't understand. At times I think they believe they are too sophisticated to engage in such juvenile excitement ::MickeyMo . I'm still working on my younger sister though. There might be hope there. :earboy2:

Luckily I have a co-worker right across the hall who's also a DVC member so we share with each other when others just shake their heads. ;-)

;) Everytime i see my dsis, she is always making comments like
" how long are you in before you go back home to the kingdom"
or
" It was nice of you to make that long trip in from the kingdom, will you at least be here for a few weeks or are you planning on going back home right away"

This past christmas we took my side of the family ( Dsis & her family, Dbrother & his family, dm & dd )"Home" with us and they sure didnt mind going "Home" with us.

Maybe they get jealous :rotfl:

I had asked dneice if she would like to go back with us for easter and i was going to pay for everything for her , i made the arrangements even decided to stay at the poly w/ concerige just for her. a few days before we left i finally call dsis to ask if dneice made up her mind and dsis said she will rather stay home with her friends... :sad2:

 Then...

i even asked dsis and her girls if they would like to go soon as the kids get out of school, i found $89 round trip airfare , i was using points for the room,
we would take the ME and we would take disney transportaion if we wanted to go anywhere. besides the cheap airfare we would have to pay for food, big deal you have to eat if you were home. Do you believe what she said...
"There is other places besides the "kingdom".
I said....
"Yep, but you cant stay for free & fly cheap." ;)

Thank you for the disboard, so we can tell each other our plans to go "Home" :teeth:

Apparently, you can only ride it once. It's really fun but wilder than you'd expect. I wanted to try the wildebeest ride on our next trip but it seems the Animal Kingdom Lodge has some sort of "black list" 'cause I can't get a reservation, even though I know plenty of rooms are available. Despite the vet bill and forcible detainment, it was worth it.

Friends and family that don't get it are why I spend so much time with all of you on the DIS!

We go approximately once per year at approximately the same time. I don't bring it up except to let those who need to know that we will be gone from xx/xx/xx through xx/xx/xx. For some reason, parents (in their 70's) and the kid (in her 20's) need to know where we are all the time, LOL!

Best wishes -

I hear ya. Some people will just never get it. My own Mother is a non-believer. She has never come with us and never will. Never brought us to Disney when we were young. Just the other night she was telling me of a relative who is down there right now. She made a comment about how it is nice for the kids. I replied that yes and it will be wonderful for the adult members of the family also, that Disney is for everyone. She just laughed and said that no it's just for kids. I hung up and felt like Sandra Bullock in "Ya Ya Sisterhood", it was all I could do not to bang the receiver of the phone!! LOL!! I try to talk about Disney to only those who believe in the magic. That's one reason I love these boards!!!

Most of our family doesn't get it - my dear SIL told us after our last vacation that "There's a big world out there and I don't want to waste time repeating the same vacation over and over!" So we usually don't even talk about our plans to family at all. But our next door neighbors are DVC members and they are only too happy to talk about "home" any time at all! :earboy2:

I too was not a believer at first but my DW said she wanted to go there
on the honeymoon and I said lets go to an Isand but reluctantly decided
to go to WDW. Ever since it has been more exciting each time back especially
now with our DS who turns 3 in November. Just get that special feeling
walking down main street towards the Castle in the MK. We finally decided to take the plunge and just purchased SSR and already have ressies for 11/13
thru 11/18 DS b-day present.

What I really don't understand is those people who have places "up-north" here in Michigan that they go to EVERY weekend!! Why is THAT so acceptable and going to Disney once a year (sometimes twice :goodvibes) NOT ok? No one EVER questions people when they say they are "going up north this weekend". There is alot more to do, in my opinion, at Disney even out of the parks than there is up-north every weekend!! We just don't get it. People assume that all there is to do is go to the parks at Disney. Do they not realize that there is a whole, big "world" out there at The World?? GEEZ, I so know how you feel!!!! It does get pretty frustrating always explaining why we are going to Disney!

One of the things I find odd, however, is how many of those "don't get it" folks GET that you have points!

They may think it's expensive, and all of the above, but that doesn't keep them from offering to rent "...points you don't need!" Unfortunately for them, we NEED all of our points.

I guess most people think of WDW as a VERY expensive place to visit over and over again, but those same people don't know about DVC, APs, DDE, etc. I assume they think of their "place up north" as paid for while all they see is $$$ when thinking about WDW. Let 'em head north, means shorter lines for us. ;)

I guess I am sort of one of those people that "don't get it" My parents and my brother and SIL both "get it" My problem with them is this:

They don't go anywhere else. Ever. My parents either travel to Disney or to Cape Cod, MA. My brother goes to Disney or a Disney Cruise. There is more to the world.

I do see the magic of Disney, we now own at SSR and have owned points at OKW for 8 years or so, but, we go other places. That can either mean making 2 major trips in a year, or taking a year off from Disney to see other things. We have done Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and many driving trips to other states.

I have no issue with going ot Disney every year, but I am not going to let that limit my family's experience with the rest of the world. I would never question a person who wanted to go to Disney every year, I only question where ELSE they have gone lately.

How about you all. Where else have you gone? Where have you wanted to go but haven't yet? Where else are you planning to go?

:grouphug:

I don't get the "up north to the lake" thing either! I grew up in the area of Minnesota where lots of folks go to be "up north", so it isn't a vacation for me! Besides, if you have a cabin on a lake, all you do when you get there is maintenance! I'd rather have Disney do the maintenance and I can enjoy the parks! :teeth:

My SIL is one of the ones who REALLY doesn't get it. She wont even let her kids go with us! They went with us once when her youngest (twins) were 10. They went the week between Christmas and New Years, refused to plan ahead or listen to suggestions, and had a horrible time because of the crowds! DUH!

I agree with you Tramp as we travel quite a bit outside of Disney as well. I hope we are able to continue traveling as much as we do when our family grows, but our kids will definitely know there is a world outside of Home and Disney. ;)
