Prologue: Getting With The Times

Times truly change.

I wrote my first WDW trip report here on the DIS back in 2001. Like most of the reports of the time, it was fairy brief and straightforward. It basically outlined what attractions, restaurants, entertainment, etc. I had done on the trip and inserted a few photos of the trip I had scanned (which was somewhat of a novelty in trip reports in the days before everyone had a digital camera). There was no cast list or mention of others that I was vacationing with, slim to no storytelling elements, and, like every other report I can recall reading back then, no pre-trip report.

Times really have changed, haven’t they? ;) I don’t think anyone on the DIS would consider most trip reports today as being brief or straightforward. Instead they are photo-filled epics that no longer have to start after returning from the world, but can begin weeks or months (maybe even years?) before arrival. Well, I've been reading these for a while and began to think that perhaps I’ll finally get with the times and make my trip reports a bit more modern. Perhaps even I could begin my next trip report with my very first pre-trip report!

And here it it!

Well, enough with talking about the report- you want to hear about the trip! I’ll be getting to more detail in the next few posts, but I will say that it’ll be a true family vacation at with Mom, Dad, and their grown sons Meeko (me, of course) and Buzz. We’ve been going to WDW together for more than 20 years now, and even though Buzz and I are all grown up, we still enjoy hitting the parks and keeping the tradition of visiting Disney as a family alive. We’ve got reservations for a three night stay at the Caribbean Beach and are set to arrive next month!

Well, I hope that’s enough of an intro for now. Stay tuned to meet the family. :surfweb:

Things sure have changed on WDW Trip Threads. Thanks for bringing your pre-trip on board. I've been asking for help, because this pre-trip board has really taken off and I just don't get to much time to get here, I'm usually watching the regular Trip Reports Board. Glad to see you here.

Thanks for the reply OhMari. It's nice to be here. :)

Chapter One: The Cast

Before we go any farther, it’s time to introduce my family and tell you a little bit of our Disney history.

Me (aka “Meeko”) The author of this trip report. I’m probably the most energetic member of the family, and can be somewhat dramatic at times. Obviously, since I’m a DISer, I enjoy visiting the Disney parks, but music and theater are among my non-WDW interest. My favorite Disney park is easily Magic Kingdom, and I’m also into meeting and photographing the characters and collecting their autographs (Exhibit A: My Web Site). My favorite attractions are Tower of Terror, Peter Pan’s Flight, and the Beauty and the Beast show, and my favorite Disney movies are Beauty and the Beast (animated) and Mary Poppins (live action).

DBrother (aka “Buzz”) Buzz is funny, fairly mellow (or least, more mellow than I am usually), and even now is still one of my best friends. If you’ve read any of my other trip reports, you may remember Buzz from my Pirate and Princess Party one from earlier this year. He’s an artist and works primarily with photography, but has always been interested in animation and cartooning as well. Like me, Magic Kingdom is Buzz’s favorite park, but really enjoys watching the animals at the Animal Kingdom too. Buzz’s favorite attractions are Splash Mountain, Tower of Terror and Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, and his favorite Disney movies are Toy Story (animated), Pirates of the Caribbean (live action). He’s also into the classic animated shorts.

DMother (aka “Mom”) I would describe Mom as being caring, smart, and very outspoken. She’s somewhat of a history buff and enjoys genealogy. She also likes to read (mysteries are among her favorite books) and sew, and she is a wonderful cook. World Showcase at EPCOT is one of Mom’s favorite places in WDW, and she’s especially interested in the restaurants and entertainment there. Mom’s favorite Attractions are Soarin’, Impressions de France, and The Barnstormer and her favorite Disney movies are Lady and the Tramp (animated) and The Moon Spinners (live action), but her new favorite is Ratatouille.

DFather (aka “Dad”) Dad is kind of goofy at times, but we love him anyway. He’s our resident garden lover and also likes solving sudoku puzzles, performing magic tricks and playing according (sometimes to his family’s dismay). At WDW, he’s defiantly the member of out family that knows full well that the benches in the parks aren’t just for decoration and can find one and properly make use of it before you can say, “Where did Dad go?” Dad’s favorite attractions are Tower of Terror, Soarin’, and Lights Motors Action, and his favorite Disney movies are The Nightmare Before Christmas (animated) and Pirates of the Caribbean (live action).

The four of us going to WDW together has been a tradition in out family since Buzz and I were toddlers. Once a year, we’d pile into the car, drive to Orlando :drive: , spend the day at Magic Kingdom and (since we’re Florida residents) drive home afterwards. :drive: This worked out fine for us kids who could sleep in the back seat after an exhausting day at the park, but it wasn’t exactly fun for the tired parents who then had to stay alert and battle the traffic all the way home. :faint:

We did these day trips for a number of years until one year, Mom had a business conference at the Swan hotel and the rest of the family joined her for the weekend, including a day at the Magic Kingdom. That put an end to our annual daytrips to WDW and started our annual vacations there. :teeth: It was then we really started to see things in the “World” outside the Magic Kingdom- EPCOT Center, Disney-MGM Studios, Disney Village Marketplace, and Discovery Island. A lot has changed over the years, but the tradition continues. Even now, we still return to WDW every summer.

And that beings us to this year. Another summer… another trip. We’ll get to that in the next chapter.

Chapter Two: The Planning Begins

To begin this chapter, here’s a brief lesson in Disney history. :teacher:

In summer 1997, Hercules and George of the Jungle were in theaters, Test Track’s opening was delayed a year and a half due to technical difficulties, Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean received a controversial rehab to make it more PC, and because of the Magic Kingdom’s 25th Anniversary, Cinderella Castle looked like this:

castlecake-97.jpg

Summer 1997 was also the last time our family stayed at the Caribbean Beach. Ten years later, we decided to go back.

Before that trip, we had stayed there a number of times. We liked the hotel, but more often than not, we wound up there because it was always the easiest one to get reservations for. Once other large hotels like Coronado Springs and Pop Century opened up, booking rooms anywhere else but the Caribbean became easier, so we stopped staying there.

Fast forward to 2007. :teleport: As we all begin to think about going to WDW this summer, the Caribbean Beach was near the top of the short list of places we consider staying. In fact it might have been at the top. In fact, it might actually have been the entire list. After the four of us had talked about it for a while, I got a call from Mom and Dad that the reservations were made! :yay: We’ll be staying at the Caribbean Beach for three nights in August.

We’ve had good luck in the past with August. Last year, the crowds were very manageable (possibly because, unlike this year, Florida schools were already in session by the time we went), the weather was beautiful, and we had a wonderful time. Hopefully, we’ll see something similar this year and that the crowds and weather won’t be too bad. But it’ll still be summer, not to mention storm season, so at this point, I’m just going to wait and see how things will go with cautious optimism. :bitelip:

Here's a few more pics from our last trip to the Caribbean Beach (please excuse the quality: they are 10 years old after all):

Next up, planning for the theme parks and making ADRs.

Chapter Three: Itinerary and ADRs

I’m almost certain that planning for WDW means something different to every member of the family. All of us are usually extremely involved with picking where we want to stay, but beyond that, all of us seem to react to planning in different ways.

Personally, I couldn’t consider myself an over-planner. I’m not the type that sets up some sort of do-or-die schedule that cannot be delineated from (well, at least not most of the time :teeth: ). I do like to have some sort of idea of what attractions or entertainment we are interested and have some sort of rough itinerary for each of the theme park days. That way, we can be sure that we hit the attractions at the times when crowds won’t be too much of a problem and know that we’ll be able to see time-sensitive things like shows or character meet-and-greets.

For Mom, planning rarely extends past checking out Disney restaurant menus online and thinking of what restaurants we should eat at. Besides that, she's usually up for almost anything. Ask her about if there are any attractions in particular she wants to see, and she’ll most likely say something along the lines of, “No. It’s up to you, but I’m not going on ___________ [Fill in blank with a name of one of the following thrill rides: Space Mountain/ Splash Mountain/ Rock n Roller Coaster/ Expedition Everest]. You guys can ride it if you want to, but I’m not getting on it.” Mom's not really into a lot of the thrill rides anymore, so we'll probably keep them to a minimum this year so she won't sit out of too many rides.

Dad is usually less involved with the actual planning, but will usually throw in a random suggestion or so of an attraction he wants to go on or what he wants to pass on (this year, he has no interest in Splash Mountain). His main role in planning is to make the ADRs for the trip and purchasing the tickets.

Then there’s Buzz. He’s usually is the first to plan, but for this trip, every time I seem to bring it up, he says that we’ll plan latter since we have plenty of time to plan. Ever since he and I planned out Pirates and Princess Party trip (including hotel reservations, ticket purchasing, etc.) in less than two weeks, I think he doesn’t see any point in planning too early anymore.

In short, we’ve still got a little planning left to do still, but by now we do at least have a rough itinerary:

Day One

Arrive at WDW early in the morning

EPCOT
  • Attraction Priorities: Gran Fiesta Tour Staring the Three Caballeros (New for us) :donald:
  • ADRs: Les Chefs de France- lunch
  • Other Dining: Yorkshire County Fish Shop at United Kingdom- dinner (weather permitting)

Day Two

Animal Kingdom
  • Attraction Priorities: Finding Nemo- The Musical (New for us) :fish: , Kilimanjaro Safaris, Conservation Station, Primeval Whirl
  • ADRs: None
  • Other Dining: Restaurantasaurus- lunch

Return to Caribbean Beach for the evening
  • Dining: Old Port Royale food court- dinner

Day Three

Magic Kingdom

  • Attraction Priorities: Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor (New for us) :sulley: , Splash Mountain (Buzz and Meeko only)
  • ADRs: Liberty Tree Tavern- lunch

  • Dining: Old Port Royale food court- dinner

Return to Magic Kingdom for the night (Buzz and Meeko only)

Day Four

Leave for home after check-out

We'll be using the Florida Residents 3-Day Play Passes which is a good deal ($40 a day for three days). :thumbsup2

I'm sure that list will be updated with a few new Attraction Priorities in the next weeks, but that's the plan in a nutshell.

Great pretrip report...I am the planner in my family. I just tell DH when he needs off from work and he just follows...as long as BOMA is on the plan.

I too live in Florida (outside Fort Lauderdale)...we go 2-3 times a year.

Or first onsite hotel was CBR....figured perfect since DH is from Jamaica. Now we like to try different ones.

Your DH definatly reminds me of Dad in reguard to planning. He'll do what he's told, but not too much past that. Sounds like your DH has great taste too. Boma is my favorite restaurant too. So delicious. ::yes::

We usually go to WDW as a family 2 or so times a year too. Definatly a benefit of being a Floridian.

Thanks for the reply. :) Glad to know you're enjoying the report. Still not use to writing pre-trip reports, so hopefully it's ok.

Chapter Four: Characters and Meet-and-Greets

With each day’s rough itinerary in place, it’s time to turn attention to characters. :mickeyjum :tigger: :stitch: :figment:

Getting character photos and autographs are one of my favorite activities at WDW. Usually, I like to try to find a few characters that I’ve never met before, and this trip will be no exception. Since I’ve already found most of the major characters, it’s getting a little trickier though. I’m pretty much down to the new characters and the obscure characters.

As the trip has been drawing closer, I’ve been checking out sites with character information and reading the DIS to find out which characters that I’ve never gotten photos of will most likely be out at the parks that we’ll be visiting. After that, I compiled a list of the characters to look out for while I’m there:

Chicken Little… In the years since Chicken Little started appearing in the park, I always seem to miss meeting him. Hopefully this year will be different, but now I’m beginning to hear that he’s becoming more hard-to-find. If he’s out, he’ll probably be at Mickey’s Toontown Fair at MK.

Jiminy Cricket… Jiminy use to be one of the most infamously rare characters in the parks, but within the past year, it seems like he appears fairly frequently at Conservation Station at AK. Nobody in my family is a big fan of going to Conservation Station, but hopefully we’ll make it over there this trip.

Marie… The white kitten from The Aristocats, Marie has appeared very regularly for a number of years at Tokyo Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland, but is now making her first appearances at WDW. It defiantly doesn’t sound like she’s out daily, but if she’s out, she’ll probably be at France in EPCOT.

Roxie & T-Rex… These two dinos are original characters (not from any film or TV show) and seem to be regular visitors to Dinoland U.S.A. and Dinorama at AK. They’re also two of the newest characters to WDW and this will be my first trip to AK since they first appeared.

Stanley… Honestly, I don’t know hardly anything about Stanley or his show on Playhouse Disney. Because of that, I’m not sure if I’d even bother meeting him if I saw him in the parks, but I’d figure I’d at least keep the possibility open. He’s is apparently sometimes found at AK near the main entrance.

Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee… I’ve seen these two out for meet-and-greets almost every year, but I always pass on this and never stop to ever get photos and autographs from them. Perhaps this is this is the year to finally meet them. If they’re out, they’ll likely be at the Mad Tea Party in MK.

I’m hoping to be able to find at least five new characters on this trip, which might be a bit on the optimistic side given that a lot of the eight above can be on the hit-and-miss side. Then again, you never know whether or not you'll see a rare character in a random location either, so it's hard to predict. We'll just have to wait and see if I can meet my goal or not.

Chapter Five: Old “New” Characters

While we’re on the subject characters, I thought I’d share a few pics of some of the characters I got photos of for the first time in the past year. Enjoy!

Last but not least, another character from the Pirate and Princess Party- Captain Jack Sparrow.

Hopefully this upcoming trip will have its fair share of new character photos as well. ::yes::

Chapter Six: Busch Gardens- Our Theme Park Warm-Up

We’ve made it to August. It’s beginning to sink in that the trip is this month! We’re not quite at single digit dance time, but getting this close has to count for something. Ahh, why not? Let’s dance!

Buzz and I were in Tampa earlier this week, so we figured that while we were there, we’d fit in an afternoon at Busch Gardens. We both have the Busch Gardens Florida Resident Fun Cards, which allows unlimited entry into the park through the end of the year for only a few dollars more than a single day’s admission ticket. (a great deal- wish Disney would do this ;) ), so it’s really easy to just pop over when we can. Since now we’re only a few weeks away from the family trip to WDW, we figured that Busch Gardens might be a good warm-up to prepare us for hitting the theme parks while we’re on vacation. After all, what better way to prepare for all the walking in the summer heat (and, on that day, rain), standing in lines, and exploring theme parks than by visiting another theme park?

Of course, as long as we’re doing all of those things, we might as well do a few rides. If you’re familiar with Busch Gardens, you know that the main attraction here is it’s collection of roller coasters. Buzz and I hit the three best (in my opinion)- Montu, Gwazi, and SheiKra. They’re great, thrill-filled coasters, but they’re defiantly not the type of rides that Mom or Dad would climb into. Don’t expect to see any rides like these to be in the WDW trip report. Recently, SheiKra just reopened from a rehab to convert it into a floorless coaster, so this was Buzz and my first time riding the “new” version. It’s really not too different, but it’s just as thrilling as ever. My favorite is Montu though, the inverted coaster with the Egyptian theme. I almost hate to say it, but I think it just might be better than any of the coasters at WDW (well, Everest might be better, I can't decide). So much fun.

lions-1.jpg

Along with the coasters, we also managed to hit a few of the park’s animal habitats- Edge of Africa and Myombe Reserve. Buzz is especially into seeing the animals, so seeing these are a definite must. Both habitats are pretty comparable to the Pangani Forest trail at AK and have primarily the same animals with a few differences. Unlike AK where you only see the lions from the Safari, at Busch you can get closer to them on the Edge of Africa walking trail, allowing a much better look at what beautiful creatures they really are. :simba: This time around, there were two younger lions that I'd never seen at the park before. They really were cute- but so big, even when they're young.

lions-2.jpg

The lioness in the area wasn’t quite as friendly due to people pounding on the glass to her habitat. At least one of them was a Busch employee (but not a zoo keeper) in full uniform! You'd think they'd know better than to harass the animals.

We also ducked into the Marakesh Theater once it started to rain again and saw the "Mirage Canteen" show. It's a cute little musical review with a 1940s theme and a thin but fun plot of a mysterious USO-style canteen that comes back to life in the dessert. I've been interested in the music of that era for a long time, so it was right up my alley. :thumbsup2 It's not exactly Buzz's thing, but I think he enjoyed it too. Plus, I was able to get more practice on taking show photos before heading off to WDW.

miragecanteen-1.jpg

A little jive and some tap dancing. They're singing the Andrew Sisters' song "Hold Tight (Want Some Seafood Mama)" which explains the costumes.

miragecanteen-2.jpg

The show's romantic leads meet for the first time at the beginning of the ballroom dance number.

miragecanteen-3.jpg

What World War II-era musical review would be complete without a big patriotic finish? "Strike Up The Band!"

Well, that's about it for Busch Gardens. Now it's back to all the last-minute planning for WDW! :tink:

Chapter Seven: Photo Scavenger Hunt (And Single Digit Dance!)

We’ve made it to single digits! Let’s really dance now! party: party: party:

Preparations for the trip continue to go fairly smoothly. The biggest news right now is that we finally bought the tickets for the parks (Florida Resident 3 Day Play Passes). We just barely beat having to pay a higher price by getting the tickets two days before the big ticket price hike earlier in the month. We may have procrastinated in getting them, but at least we didn’t wait too long.

Lately, I also just finished up compiling a list for our family’s photo scavenger hunt. I originally tried doing a scavenger hunt as just something to help me take pictures other than the usual pictures of park icons and characters I usually get. I printed out a list of about 50 words that correspond to things you’d find at WDW and cut them up into slips of paper. At the beginning of each day, I’d randomly draw out a few slips from a bag or something and have to take a picture of whatever was on the slips. The rest of my family seemed to like the idea, so the next year, all four of us did the scavenger hunt. Everyone seemed to have fun, and Mom even used some of the pics from the hunt to decorate pages in her scrapbook.

It really hadn’t crossed my mind to try doing the hunt again this year until Mom asked if we could to do it again. Apparently, it was a hit. I went back to the original list and changed a few words out here and there in order to prepare it for this year’s trip. Here’s the list as it is now:

  • Artwork
  • Attraction Sign
  • Bird
  • Boat
  • Book
  • Bridge
  • Cat
  • Clock
  • Directional Sign
  • Dog
  • Doorway
  • Entertainment
  • Fast Pass Machine
  • Favorite
  • Fish
  • Flag
  • Flower
  • Fountain
  • Gift Shop
  • Hat
  • Hero
  • Heroine
  • Island
  • Joke
  • Kodak Photo Spot
  • Landscaping
  • Light Post
  • Menu
  • Mickey
  • Mountain
  • Movie Tie-In
  • Mural
  • PIXAR
  • Plaque
  • Poster
  • Pressed Coin Machine
  • Restaurant
  • Restroom Sign
  • Sidewalk
  • Sign in language other than English
  • Something being built or refurbished
  • Staircase
  • Statue
  • Toy
  • Train
  • Transportation
  • Trash Can
  • Villain
  • Water
  • Window

What do you think? I'm hoping all the items will be general enough that they could be found at any of the parks we'll be at (EPCOT, AK and MK), but specific enough to where we'll get some cool photos. I'm also planning on posting all the pics I take from the Scavenger Hunt in my Trip Report once I get back from WDW, so you'll get a chance to see the ones I get.

Well, back to preparing for the trip. Did I mention we're in single digits yet? :rotfl:

party:

Chapter Eight: A Few Random Updates

The trip is almost here. Less than a week to go! The planning is pretty much complete and everything seems to be going fairly smoothly, so there’s really not all much to report. Pretty much all that’s left to do is to pack and waiting for next week’s entertainment schedules to be released so I can print them out before we leave. Mom and Dad have said that they were interested in seeing some of the street entertainment at AK this year, so we’ll defiantly want to get some of those schedules before we leave since I don’t think they’re printed in the park Times Guides.

Buzz has been getting some Disney music ready for the car trip to Orlando. :music: In years past, he’s always just dubbed a mix tape of some Disney music for the trip, but this year we decided that we’d go the more modern route and try buying some songs online and dubbing them onto a CD. Everything went great, until we realized that the car’s CD player doesn’t seem to work. It turns out nobody had ever tried to play a CD on it before, so we have no idea how long it’s been non-functional. :confused3 Not sure what we’re going to do now about the music though. We might just have to turn that CD into a mix tape.

Well, that’s about it for this chapter, I think. I’m not quite sure if I’m getting the hang of this “Pre-Trip Report” stuff. I’m never sure what to write about. Hopefully it’s still entertaining enough. How am I doing?

Chapter Nine: A Pre-Trip Ends

More likely than not, this will be the last chapter to my first trip report. I guess that there comes a time when all pre-trip reports must end. Fortunately, that means that the trip is about to begin! Buzz, Mom, Dad and I will all be heading to WDW in just a couple of days. Right now though, we still have to do all those last-minute things you do before a trip.

The website where I get the WDW entertainment schedules was updated on Saturday, so I went ahead and compiled and printed out cards with the times and locations for all the characters I’ll be looking for this trip. They’re all color coded to denote whether they are characters I’ve never met before or characters that I don’t have autographs of.

charactersheets.jpg

Speaking of printing, all the slips for the family Photo Scavenger Hunt are printed out and ready to go too. I couldn't think of a creative Disney-themed way to store them, so they'll be waiting in a small Tupperware bowl until they're drawn. All the slips are at least in this Disney font, so that's got to get me some creative points. (Can you tell that I've never been to any of the arts and crafts boards here on this DIS? ;) )

Buzz managed to take the CD that he burned with music for the car ride and dubbed it onto a mix tape. Still can't figure out why the car's CD player won't work, but at least we will have music.

The packing is pretty much done (or at least my packing is). Camera batteries are being recharged as we speak, the fat pens for autographs have been tested and appear to all still write, and everyone has at least one poncho per day just in case we hit one of those normal isolated summer thunderstorms that are being predicted for this week. :umbrella:

Well, I believe that's about it. I'll be sure to start the actual Trip Report after we get back. Hopefully, I'll come back with plenty of pictures to make the Report more interesting. Until then, we're on vacation! :teeth:

Thanks for the pre-trip report Meeko!

Can't wait to see the results of your photo scavenger hunt! Such a cool idea!

Thanks for the pre-trip report Meeko!

Thanks Sarah. Glad you liked it. :) Thanks for reading and responding.

I'm back! :cool1:

I know a lot of DISers are really bummed when they get home from WDW, but I'm happy. We had a great trip and had so much fun, but it's nice to be home too. I'm excited about starting the trip report too. I'm not sure if I should start it by just continuing in this thread or having it moved to the Trip Report Board or if I should just start a new thread there and post a link to the Pre-Trip. Anyone have an preferences on what would be better?

And for those of you who want a taste of what the report will be like, I have a Character Report on the Theme Park Attractions and Strategies board which lists all the characters that I spotted this trip. I feel the need to say that The Chararacter Report does contian Spoilers, so if you want to be surprised when you read the report, you might want to skip this for now. Otherwise, check it out. There are a few pics in the report, but I promise there will be many more in the full Trip Report.
