~~~ May 16, 2009 ~~~ Western Magic ~~~
Wow! What a group we're getting! :jumping1: Again, I'm SOOO sorry I haven't been updating or even posting for so long! For some reason, I'm still not getting my email notifications that someone has posted. :welcome: to all the new members of our cruise! I think I have everyone added to the 1st post. Let me know if I missed you. Thanks for those that PM'ed me your info.
Looks like it's getting close to booking time for excursions, Palo, etc. (which also means payoff date!). I'm sure as it gets closer, we'll all be checking in here more often with lots of questions, tips, get-to-know-you, and such. I'm glad the holidays are over so I can now focus on this trip! YAY!!!! :yay:
Disgirl--congrats on becoming a CPA!!! :thumbsup2
tigger2002--for us in 2007, Pirate Night was on Wednesday. We did Palo on Thursday, which was Captain's Gala menu (lobster, which you can also get in Palo that night--Justin did). Looks like this is the most recent set of Navigators, which helped me tremendously last time to plan. http://www.wdwinfo.com/Photos/DCL-Navigators/11-01-08-dm/index.htm I printed them off and studied them constantly so I knew exactly what was going on each day! :blush:
Cinda--your "not-to-miss" list looks great! :thumbsup2 Those were all things we did last time, too (except the dune buggies). And I'm glad to hear you're definitely coming with us!
To all those interested in the FE, I'm not going to take the reins on organizing that because we didn't do it on our last cruise, so it's all new to me! :scared: Anyone else that has experience with it can certainly take control of it! :goodvibes (Sheesh, I have trouble just keeping up with all the new cruise members!) :laughing: Maybe if someone provided some general info about what the FE exchange is that would be helpful to all those that don't know yet.
As far as DIS meets, we haven't really set anything up for sure...except the FKLP tour in KW!! If any experienced cruisers want to toss out some ideas of what you've done in the past, we can maybe decide some of the ones that everyone has the most interest in participating in. And just because it's set up as a "DIS meet," don't feel like you have to be at every single one of them either. We kinda hit & missed the ones last time. Here's some that were set up for our group last time:
***In the terminal. Most of us arrived right at 10:00, so we had quite a bit of time to meet & greet with everyone. The photos we all posted beforehand really helped us recognize each other from across the room!!
***The Mickey Pool (for those of us with younger kids) right after embarkation. I'm sure there may have been something going on at the Goofy Pool, too, but we weren't part of that.
***3:00 in the Promenade Lounge. I forgot about this one, so we didn't attend. Oops!
***Deck 10 for the Sailaway Party. We did have trouble finding everyone, though, so there may have been several small groups of us spread out. We had just a few others DIS'ers right around us.
***All the tastings had groups in it. Justin & I didn't do the wine or martini, but we did the tequila & beer with a few different people (note to self: don't do these back to back again! Yowza!!) :rotfl2:
***Palo? I think there was a group of people that arranged for Palo reservations at the same time/table/area, but we had our anniversary plans by ourselves, so we didn't participate in that one either.
***GC--Cap'n Marvin's stingray excursion. Our group had 3.5 families on the excursion boat.
***CC--far end of family beach.
***'Til We Meet Again (character show) in the lobby Friday night. As an impromptu meeting that was set up just hours earlier, we did end up with quite a group and probably ended up being the largest meet that I attended.
There may be other meets that we had, too, but I'll have to go back to the old cruise thread to find out for sure. Another way to meet up with other DIS'ers was to link dinner reservations for all that are early or late. We requested a specific dinner rotation (and got it) and asked to be sat with/near each other. Even though we were all linked, somehow our family still ended up at a table for 4. We did have all DIS'ers around us, so that was pretty cool, too.
I think we'll be cutting back on our "after the cruise" plans. We were going to stay at WDW for a couple days, but I think we'll probably rent a car and go to KSC after disembarking and then fly home the next day. With it being Memorial Day weekend, the flights don't start going down in price until Tuesday, so if we save $500 in airfare by leaving on Tuesday, we'll still have two more days of hotel/tix/food/souveneirs/etc., which I know would be much more than that! After watching the WDW DVD again, we know we want to wait a little longer to do MK when the boys are a little older and we can all enjoy some of the bigger rides. I just hope that Cirque du Soleil will still be there then! AK & Cirque were the two big things I wanted to stick around for after the cruise.
Since January is always Disney month at AAA, I think we'll transfer our ressies sometime in the next couple weeks to get some more OBC (depending on what they charge this time--I think they overcharged us last time). We had gotten some sort of welcome packet, but it wasn't until shortly before the cruise (we booked only 3 months out, but we still didn't get it right away). If we don't do AAA, we'll probably do DU since it sounds like lots of people are satisfied with them, but I think AAA's OBC is a little better, especially if you book on a specific day of the month. BRING ON THE OBC!!! :rotfl:
How does the transfer to a different travel agent work (eg AAA or DU)? I have booked thru a different travel agent. Can you transfer your current reservation to someone different and get the On Board Credits?
We are going to stay at Hilton Head for a few days after the cruise. I always book thru Priceline or Hotwire to get some pretty good deals.
We booked onboard last time, so right now, we have no TA and will transfer to either AAA or DU before final pmt is due for even extra OBC.
I've heard good things about Priceline or Hotwire for booking hotels, so I'll definitely need to check into that! (I'm all about getting a good deal!) :laughing:
hey guys - is anyone interested in custom lanyards?
I am looking into them, not sure how many total we have in our meet but that would depend on if I could do them all or have everyone pay.
So much has been happening on here since I last checked! I'm glad to see that even more people have joined, the more the merrier!!! :yay:
Like I said before I'm definately interested in the meets and the fish extenders, but I've never been involved personally in either. I've only read about both on the boards. If no one else volunteers for the FE I could try to put something together, but I'll definately have to do a little more research on what to do so if anyone is reading this and wants to take control, please do! :)
I do almost all of my reservations for hotels with Hotwire or Priceline. I have gotten great deals at Hilton Head, Nashville, Greenville SC, etc.
At Disney we normally stay at the Beach Club Villas.
Good thing it's a weekend, so we can be up in the middle of the night to book! Last time I was at the 75-day mark for new cruisers, so it was in the middle of the week, and I overslept by about 3 hours!!!! (started at 2 AM for CST) Of course, by the time 75 days rolls around, the "prime" spots were taken for Palo already anyway, so I took what I could get and just had to reschedule as soon as we got onboard. We got boarding pass #3 at the terminal and made a beeline straight to Rockin' Bar D to reschedule for our anniversary night and got it! :hug:
FYI--
105 days = Jan 31 (concierge rooms & Romantic Escape reservations)
90 days = Feb 15 (Castaway Club members--previous cruisers)
75 days = Mar 2 (new cruisers)
Here's a link to Tink113's post about KW electric cars in case anyone else is wanting to look into it. Shirley's contact sounds like a good one with one hour free rental with any 2+ hour rental. I think it'll be a good way to get around for the FKLP tour!!! (Sssssslurp!) I hope 3 hours is enough time to get to all of them! :lmao: (Although a walking FKLP tour would take longer, it might be better for working off all those pies!)
here's my last 90 day out booking experience from my trip report! We had a glitch that night and we say the refreshing fish FOREVER!
Saturday February 9th and Sunday February 10th 2008 ~ Pirate Law #68 ~ Pirates do not "IM". The only instant message allowed is a sword through the chest.
FINALLY! Three months to go – meaning - the famous BOOKING NIGHT. My day – well year - was not really going as planned. Ever feel like your life should be a sitcom? Just which one? Depends on the day here! I bet I could give those writers on strike some fantastic storylines!!!
Within the week both my car and Charming’s had had issues. His is ok for now, mine is pretty major. Transmission major. There was a fleeting glimpse of canceling but luckily my husband quickly squelched any momentary thought I may have had. See, he really is Charming!
There was a hint of excitement in the air all day. Does it matter that I was the only one feeling it? At least in my household. Tomorrow was my baby’s birthday so we did the birthday and 90 day celebration all rolled in one!
My plan was --- I was going to stay up, simple as that. Midnight, piece of cake! Plus, I had insurance….DIS insurance. Four families who were going to ensure that at least ONE would give me a wake up call! No worries in the Carlin Castle…..except….
As the day progressed I started doing that thing I do….worry, fret, over analyze, over think and just plain FREAK OUT about “the plans”. There are so many choices…which day was the optimum to book Palo, what excursion to take, you know, really important issues. I decided to sit down with Charming and go over what we had already decided to book, just for some reinforcement.
BIG MISTAKE…..huge!
He’s wanting all different things now…I was about to go over the edge…I can’t handle any last minute changes. This man is going to drive me to drink! I tried to hold down my frustrations as I fed the family and watched the clock. Haley was begging me to “come sit a me” and watch High School Musical 2 for the 2,749th time. “come on Mommy” as her little hand grabbed mine. I couldn’t resist. Charming and Samantha were watching something on the couch so off I toddled with my soon to be “free” year old.
I settled into the bottom bunk and Haley and I proceeded to belt out the tunes at the top of our lungs. Musical stylings a la V are always sure to please! Somewhere in between Sharpay introducing her Daddy to Troy and convincing Fulton to not let employees in the talent show the unthinkable happened.
I FELL ASLEEP!
I woke up, all was dark, Haley nestled in my arms and HSM2 was on the menu screen. In a state of panic, I probably said something inappropriate as I threw my sleeping baby along with the covers off me. Hitting my head in my frantic escape, I tore out of the bedroom yelling at John, who was sound asleep snuggling with Samantha. I got to the computer and it was 12:45am – OMG, 45 minutes late, I knew without a doubt Palo was gone.
As I was logging into the Disney Cruise Line site, which was taking forever to load, I ventured over to the DIS to exclaim all my frustrations and to see what everyone else reserved….here is my DIS posting on the infamous night:
1:06am omg, I fell asleep and woke up at 12:45! Now I can't get in!
At this point I am freaking!
1:10am this is terrible!!!!
1:14am oh my....deep breaths! I am having a wine! Where is John1?
Thought the wine would help calm my nerves.
1:16am quit counting fish people!
1:22am ARE YOU KIDDING??? DCL kicked me out and then offered me a survey!
DCL so not wants to hear what I think about their website right now.
1:23am I am wine-ing too!
Here's a way too expensive thing on Ebay that maybe someone will love!
http://cgi.ebay.com/Boutique-Bottega...QQcmdZViewItem
Hey, I am a gal who knows how to multitask.
1:25am CRAP I didn't confirm brunch.....
Charming is so going to kill me if he doesn’t get brunch.
1:32am someone needs to help me before I throw my PC in the pool!
1:34am omg, I need an intervention here...
1:38am my red headed temper is COMING OUT!
1:42am I can hear John snoring...the girls are sound asleep.....I could be enjoying this glass of wine and a lifetime movie - BUT NO....Why am I doing this again? Oh right, I am nominated for wife of the year…
1:43am are you kidding the pirate ship is booked?
1:49am I put on the Holiday
So now I am refreshing the DCL site, drinking, scouring Ebay and watching a movie….
1:53am I am so over these freaky fish.
If I never see that darn Mickey head made out of blue fish I will be a happy gal.
2:01am po'ed!
2:28am this sucks!
I do not want to do the ressie rush onboard to get Palo.................
2:34am I cannot even get on the site at this point. I am soooooo upset.
4:44am now watcihng the Da Vinci Code....I am going to be hurting tomorrow.
I think the bottle is empty by now.
4:52am 5am....I am hurting already
5:10am no one call me tomorrow! I am going to bed....5:17am!
6:01am it's funny - all the lurkers and non posters are now out!! Iam on, did not go o bed yet!
3:01pm 23 pages today alone! What a fiasco last night, DCL needs to do better than this!
Between 6:30 and 7 I crawled into bed and told John he would have to handle the girls when they awoke from the fantastic night of sleep I am sure they had. I didn’t get up until after 11am and luckily no nightmares of the freaky fish.
I called for Haley to come into my room – she did and I snuggled her and sang her Happy Birthday…then, just as quick, sent her off and I logged onto the DCL site to see if I had booked anything or what was going on…in my wine-o state of mine these were my bookings:
Castaway Cay – Stingrays
Castaway Cay – Couples Cabana Massage
5/17 Palo Dinner
5/18 Stone Therapy
5/19 Acapulco City Tour
5/20 Exotic Rasul
5/21 PV Las Caletas
5/23 Palo Brunch
5/24 High Tea
What was I thinking? I must have just clicked confirm on anything I could! I even included someone else on the high tea reservation! Basically, what it comes down to…..Palo brunch and dinner and the Acapulco City Tour. They entire time I am checking our reservation Charming is breathing down my neck wanting to know if I got Palo. Ahh yes, he can now rest easy. I am just thankful that I don’t have to make the mad dash to Rockin’ Bar D, I mean there is a buffet to get to!
The entire online booking for excursions was an absolute nightmare. Disney needs to do something about this. Many fellow cruisers were locked out saying they had not paid in full, when in fact, they had. Others were unable to book their children on excursions even though the children were within the age group specified. It was just terrible. I feel lucky that I have the Palo reservations because that is pretty much all I wanted.
Now the party can begin!
Time to mix up a batch of those Bad Girl Cocktails:
1 1/2 Absolut Madrin
1/4 oz Peach Schnapps
1 oz Sweet and Sour
1/2 oz Cranberry Juice
Mix in shaker with ice, serve straight up in a martini glass with a lightly sugared rim.
or do as I do, get one of those HUGE martini glasses from Michaels and just dump all contents and grab a straw!
V~tip ~ on the night of your booking, set an alarm!
Wow! What an experience! Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing this time! ;)
Well, we just got some awesome news today! Our (small) local airport just announced a couple hours ago that they are starting regular air service again next month. We had been without much of anything since last summer, except twice-a-week Vegas flights. We don't know the details yet, but we know they'll be to Kansas City (hopefully at least 2-3 each day), and then we can catch a direct flight from KC to MCO. Yay! No more driving 2 hours to Omaha and paying outrageous parking fees!! Just a quick trip about 10 minutes away with free parking! Or we could have MIL drop us off, too, if we don't want the car to sit there the whole time. I'm so excited about this! :yay: Now we can finally book our flights! Good thing Disney Visa is offering 5X DDRD on airfare right now. :woohoo:
:sad2: Well, my bubble hasn't completely burst (yet), but it definitely has a leak. I don't think the Grand Island flights are going to work out without some sort of huge layover in KC. Today's paper lists the flight times, and it's not what I was hoping for. This will probably get real boring, but I just need to think things through. Weekdays have 2 flights out of GI at 10:51 AM and 6:25 PM and arriving at 11:56 AM and 7:30 PM respectively, but the nonstop flights from KC to MCO on SW are 7 AM, 12:40 PM, and 6:05 PM. The only way it could work would be to have a 6-hour layover! The 12:40 won't work because my TA told me this morning that these airlines don't contract baggage with other airlines, so we'd need to allow at least 3 hrs to get baggage, check it back in with the other airline, go through security again, etc. (More on the TA below... :sad2: ) That still leaves us 3 hrs of "waiting" AND not getting to MCO until 9:40 PM! Last time, we had a late arrival, and we even got delayed 3 hrs! Instead of arriving at 11 PM, we got there at 2 AM (NOT FUN with 3&5 y/o!), shuttled to the hotel, checked in at 2:30, slept for a second, and got up to have breakfast & be ready for our car service at 8:30. (BUT, we were at the terminal before 10:00 AND got boarding pass #3! ;) ) Then when we come home on Sunday, it definitely won't work out because there's only 1 flight from KC to GI, and it leaves at 10:25 AM, but SW's earliest flight leaves at 8:40 AM and arrives at 10:30, so that's not even an option. :sad1: Sorry for all the boring details, but I just needed to work the numbers in my head to make sure it's not going to be possible. Thanks for listening...:laughing:
Anyway, about the TA, I stopped into AAA this morning to see if they have the bonus OBC day again this year, and she told me that we can only get one OBC! Since we booked with DCL, she thinks that's the only one we get! EVERYTHING on the DIS says you can combine them, so we were expecting that. I should be hearing something from her soon because the office had a Disney conference call scheduled as I was leaving, so she said she'd ask about it. I'm sure she's wrong (makes me sound :snooty: , doesn't it?) because I don't think she personally does much with booking DCL (believe me, the only reason we decided to use a TA again was to get more OBC!). Otherwise, we may be switching to DU instead (hopefully she doesn't "take over" my reservation until she finds out for sure and calls me!).
Welcome to the boards! I see you are from GA! I grew up in Moultrie (southwest) and lots of my family is in north GA. You and your DH are almost exactly our ages...(32 on the first day of the cruise and 36)!
We still aren't 100% sure we are able to go, but I'm going to pay off the cruise on Feb. 15 in hopes of not having to cancel by March 1... Since I spend too much time on these boards, it's going to be really, really hard if we don't make the trip.
morning, V is a happy girl today....GO GATORS!!
this cruise is what I booked in lieu of going to the game, although really wanted to do that too!
