May 14, 2011 - Eastbound TransAtlantic

I'm a bit sad that they didn't move us up from 9d to 9b before filling the 9's with GTY's, though. I think we are out of the running for an upgrade. I won't even try at port, because the most important thing to me is keeping our connecting door. With them filling up the ship, before moving us, I don't think the connecting door rooms will be left. So we will be happy with what we have ;)

Thats the thing If I Pick a room I picked it for a reason to just change it I could be upset.

I.E I booked a Aft balcony(being on the back was same cost as being on side) on my NCL crossing if they bumped me to a mini suite I would have been pissed.

Some ppl want lower decks , some know the reviews of a room or had that room b4 etc. was very surprised to see then just bumping NCL would call if no answer you don't get moved.

DCL does things differently from year to year, even from cruise to cruise. Last year, those with a stateroom number tended to get better upgrades than those that were GTY for the EBTA and the first few Meds. No one, that I know of, was called before their upgrade. But then they changed their upgrade "style" and for the Med. after the one I was on, the GTY's got the HUGE jump, leapfrogging over many others. So, you never can tell and it is hard to guess what will happen.

I did read about one very upset cruiser (last year's EBTA) who was upgraded from 12 GTY to a 10. She did NOT want the split bathroom. She called DCL and had them put her into a 12.

Congrats to all those that got upgrades! :thumbsup2

That is probably why you didn't get upgraded. They only have a few of those on the ship.... and they are usually in demand.

still no cabin # for us, we are in a 9D GTY. I have often thought that you stand a better chance of an upgrade if there is only 2 of you in the cabin, as opposed to a triple or quad. Those that have gotten upgrades, how many peeps in your cabin?

There are 3 in ours. I am on an industry rate and have cruised 5 times on DCL before. I was guarantee 5C or better and got 5B

Well after reading all the posts from you guys I went and checked my booking this morning. I originally booked our cruise in September or October 2009. I had done an inside with three people, then when my mother decided not to go I removed her and switched us to an oceanview 9A. We were assigned cabin 7012, today I looked and they moved us to cabin 7030 which I think has a verandah now????? I am so excited if that is the case.

That is great! :thumbsup2 I'm sorry that your Mom is no longer able to go, but this was a nice little turn of events.

I will miss that she isn't going now, however looking forward to spending some time with my husband.

On another note I had seen you were on my FE list, however you don't have a cabin #, but just says deck 1?? Have you been assigned a cabin yet?

Hopefully everyone will start to list their cabin #'s I hate to have the gifts and then not be able to know where everyone's cabins are. Definately not taking the laptop with me, but will print out the sheets before we sail.

I also think I will put stuff on my calendar in my Ipod which might come in handy.

Oh too does anyone know if we are mailed luggage tags for the port or are they somewhere to print online? I just wondered because I had previously been told I should have received a welcome packet when the cruise was booked and I never got anything. Just hope I don't miss anything else that is supposed to be mailed.

7030 is a Veranda room. You can check out where your room is and what category it is at

I don't believe this is so. You do have a better chance of an upgrade if there are 3 or fewer of you as every cabin on the ship will hold 3 people. If there are 4 in your party you reduce the number of cabins that will hold the group, thus reducing the chances of an upgrade. We've been upgraded as 2 and as 3 in a cabin as well as not upgraded as a solo cruiser, a and a group of 2.

The more cabins there are that you could be upgraded to, the better the chance of an upgrade.

Yes, they do upgrade the nicer cabins first--if they are moving anyone from a 5 or 6 to a 4, that will happen (gives them a little extra room). That opens those 5s and 6s for the people in inside cabins to move to...so the 8s and 9s will see upgrades to 5s and 6s. Then the insides will see upgrades--again, normally to a porthole. However, they do not fill every "nicer" cabin on the ship. I've been in an inside cabin when there were empty porthole and balcony cabins. Some are kept empty in case there is a cabin problem where someone needs to be moved; some are just empty because they are!

If you booked something "special" like connecting cabins, you decrease your chances--there are relatively fewer of these on the ship. SO, I don't think the poster was "passed over" for an upgrade; I think that she didn't get one because there wasn't a connecting upgrade to move her into.

We are lucky--our cruise isn't full. People have been getting used to upgrades in the couple of years. With the economy improving and the ships filling, I suspect upgrades will go back to "few and far between" status. However, I've certainly enjoyed these years!

OK, NEW TOPIC

I mentioned this before, but is anyone interested in doing a book exchange? We did this a couple different ways last year. The easiest was that one person hung a bag outside her cabin. If you had a book you wanted to donate/exchange, you dropped it in the bag. If there was one there that you wanted, you helped yourself. Any books left at the end of the cruise were donated to the crew library. If there is interest in this, I will volunteer to hang the bag outside my cabin.

The other system involved meeting times, etc. which I found more cumbersome although it did make for meeting some people. SO...interest? I can't see any reason NOT to do this as it is so easy.

Hi!:wave2:

Thanks for your offer to handle the book exchange but David & Adele have already offered to handle this for the group. They will also be the location for the DIS UPDATE white board. They are in cabin #6092.

A reminder for anyone new to our cruise to go to the first page of this thread and then to the spreadsheet. Clicking on "Events Description" gives a good overview of things that DISers have planned for the group. Once a week, I click on each topic to see if there are any updates and it also gets me excited to see how close we're getting!!

Thanks for everyone's help in making this a great cruise!

See you real soon! :yay:
