This was our second Disney cruise, and my 10th cruise overall. Overall, we had a terrific vacation, and rebooked onboard. It’s a beautiful ship, and my DS just loved being on “Mickey’s boat.”

I know there’s a lot of Disney vs. Every Other Cruise lLne on these boards, but my opinion is that DCL complements the other lines. There’s good and bad, pros and cons on all of them: So here’s what I really think of the whole experience, weighing in our past cruises, too.

The good things:

The ship: It’s classy, and very well kept. Fresh-water pools are a terrific touch.
The room: DCL has the best designed rooms afloat, I think. All the space is so well used, and the bathrooms are genius. The theming is great. Love having a bath tub when you have small kids. We were very comfortable in our category six room.

The food: The food has come a long way since we sailed in September 2004. All our meals were flavorful and well-prepared. The wraps, fruit and veggies by the Mickey pool are great.

Castaway Cay: As everyone has said, a beautiful island, with many Disney touches and Disney theming.

The disappointments:

The ship service was good, but not great: Frankly, I’ve had better service on other cruises. Our dining servers were good, but to me seemed most concerned about the bottom line, which for them is how we’d fill out our survey card. Our stateroom attendant was one of the most indifferent I’ve had on any cruise. We got off to a bad start when there was no ice or even glasses in our room when we sailed. We had to call TWICE to get them. And at one point later in the cruise, I was heading down the hall, and she handed me my ice bucket to take to my room. Our DVC magnet was stolen from our door, and when I asked if I could get another one, she told me to go check with the DVC staff onboard. Any other cruise I’ve been on, and she would have asked herself. This isn’t deal breaker stuff, but it’s not top notch, either.

The ship was really, really crowded at night: The public areas, like the atrium, just seemed jam-packed in the evening, much more so than other ships we’ve been on. We retreated to our room for the quiet.

Some evenings, there wasn’t much for adults to do: Particularly the Pirate’s Night. Everything else on the ship closes for this party, which goes on too long. It’s fine if you want to go there, but if you don’t, the rest of the ship is pretty much shut down. Sessions was nice, but underused and the piano player wasn’t often there. There was never anybody in the disco when we passed by.

Oceaneer’s club was an absolute zoo some nights: My son didn’t want to stay there some evenings because it was literally a madhouse, just jammed with kids. He begged to go back to the room so he could lie down. The staff was great, though. I singled out them in the comment cards. There was lots of free time in the clubs, and I think my DS may have been more engaged if they were doing activities in there. Also, since they didn't like down until 10 p.m. (kinda late for 3 & 4 year olds) he really preferred to go back to the room so he could lie down.

The dining options: Topsiders is pretty small for a buffet area. I really like the Windjammer Cafés on RCL. These get better each time I sail RCL.

Mixed: Palo’s brunch was superb, dinner was just OK, partly because the dining rooms are so much better now. It took forever to get served at Palo at dinner.

Adding these all up, I'll be looking around to see if perhaps the Freedom of the Seas or one of the Princess boats will be a good fit for us for our next cruise, particularly if I can get a mini-suite for the price of our category six we have booked now. I like the idea of the freestyle dining on Princess, as well as their freshwater pools.

And the new RCI boats look amazing. I'll eagerly be reading their trip reports to see if its the right fit for our family, or if Disney remains the best, in spite of the high prices. In-room sitting would be another benefit for us, since DS likes to go to bed early after he's been swimming all day.

Hope this helps people who are weighing all their options...

Thanks for fair, unbiased report. We are booked for our fifth DCL trip later this year, but I think it maybe time to move to RCL, NCL or Princess. My oldest is 19 now and his younger brother is 13. I don't know that we have to keep doing the Disney thing...although it served the purpose at the time when they were younger. Both boys are use to cruising and I would like to try some other lines. I'm really concerned that my 19 year-old will be bored to death on this cruise, since he is too old for the teen club and too young for the bars. They don't seem to have any activities for the late-teen to early-twenty year-olds.

I appreciate your honest opinon.

Thanks,

Thanks! I'm glad I haven't been flamed yet...I was sort of waiting for it. I love WDW and DCL, but the prices are prohibitive at certain times of the year.

Hi Jodifla!

I'd also like to thank you for your truthful expression of the pro's and cons of a DCL cruise for your family! I am a huge fan of Disney and their cruise product, but I think at times people here lose sight of the fact that there are other cruise lines that also do an excellent job of providing family cruises. I'll be interested to hear what cruise you choose for your next family vacation and how it goes for you.

Don't worry about getting flamed, you just gave your honest opinion. We've done 3 Princess cruises and I have a 4th planned on the Crown for 11/4 out of San Juan and can't wait. I just booked us on the 7/23 4 night Wonder cruise only because I couldn't get on a Princess ship to save my life! My kids really would have prefered Princess, but are looking forward to the Wonder cruise.
Honestly, there are pros and cons to every single cruise line, there really is if everyone is honest. I think if you venture to another line and go into with an open mind you'll love your family cruise just as much.

I feel you did a great job with what you had to say. Thanks for the report

Hi Jodiefla,

Thanks for the rundown. I am 25 and my husband is 33 and we will be doing the Disney cruise too. We've done Priness and Royal Caribbean so I know that Disney will be much different. I too am a fan of Windjammer's and we're trying to mentally prepare ourselves for the kid-crowd on the Disney cruise. But....we're such big Disney fans that we wanted to try it and let loose and have a good time. I'm glad to hear that you liked the staterooms. The books keep saying that they're 25% bigger! The inside of the Disney Magic seems like night and day compared to the ultra-bright modern white centrums of RCL. Still, loved reading your report and cant wait to try out the DCL. Thanks!
:thumbsup2

Loved your trip report. I too loved how big and roomy the buffet was on the Explorer. Also, loved the deck space, the huge amount of deck chairs, the option of going to the Promanede. Loved the junior suite! Loved sailing from Miami!

I'm kind of in the same boat as DisneyGirl. After 3 DCL cruises, we were ready to change. My sons will be 17 and 14 on our next cruise. This past Spring we sailed the Explorer of the Seas. Loved it. We are booked for the Freedom of The Seas April 2007. My son's can't wait!

RE: Fresh Water Pools...The FOS has them and soon all of RCCL's fleet will have them...or that is what I have heard....so that shouldn't be a concern anymore.

We have sailed 3 DCL cruises and now 2 RCCL..Mariner and FOS. Loved them both and will probably continue sailing RCCL since our boys are older. We too, noticed the night life for adults on DCL was nil....and we are not partiers but now that our kids are older, we enjoy staying out dancing, wallking around, gamgling etc on our vacation!

Thanks for a great report. I agree with you on many of your points. We have 2 sons. Our oldest is 8 and our youngest just turned 5. We are on the August 5th Eastern Magic and looking forward to it. This will be their 5th cruise and my husbands and my 11th cruise. We have loved all of our Disney cruises but with out a doubt will try one of the new RCI ships and also take them on Princess. My husband and I sailed on the Caribbean Princess and loved it.

Last year while the Magic was sailing out of LA we learned a hard lesson. We took our sons on the CCL Glory Eastern. Let me say the ONLY good thing about that cruise was St. Thomas and St. Martin. There is no way in the world I would take a step back on that ship in my life let alone with children.

I blame myself bc I am usually more prepared and research everything to death. But our TA let us down and I did not check up on him. It was horrible. With that being said we will sail the Magic again and with our sons still young possibly a few more times but we think it is getting close to time to try out RCI and Princess.

PS: I agree about the kids clubs. The staff is great but it is crowded and you can understand why we have TV shows on like "Nanny 911" (lol).......my children tend to back away from the chaos.

Yes, for us one of the biggest disappointments was the Pirate Party night. Everything else on the ship closes for this, and to us, it's just not that big of a deal. We would have preferred to have been in the piano lounge or something else adult, but no....just the Pirate Night Party was going on for two hours, nothing else was happening on the whole ship! And of course, this was the one night we felt we had to be to bed early, because of the early morning wakeup call in St. Thomas, so by the time the party was ending, we were heading for bed.

Thank God for variety, else the Magic would be crowded to the hilt. We are forced to try RCCL next summer because the Magic won't be here. Our Alaska Cruise on HAL made us realize how special the Magic is, This Sept 30 & Oct 7th will be our 6th & 7th Cruises on DCL. We're 64 & 63, hope to have many more. The smoking on other ships will keep us coming back to the Magic. The Grandkids are 17 & 12 and also love the Magic, don't think another ship will ever replace her for us. :cool1:
