My dad was born in 1924 so he vividly remembered the Red Car. He also talked about what growing up in Los Angeles was like when where he lived in Alhambra was considered the outskirts of Los Angeles. After the Long Beach earthquake of 1933, he and his siblings went to school in tents.

Some history about the 1933 Long Beach quake:

The Long Beach earthquake of 1933 took place March 10, 1933 at 5:55 pm Pacific Time, registering 6.3 on the Richter scale and causing widespread damage to buildings throughout Southern California. The epicenter was offshore, southeast of Long Beach on the Newport-Inglewood Fault. Forty million dollars property damage resulted, and 115 lives were lost. Many of these fatalities occurred as people ran out of buildings and were hit by falling debris.

The major damage occurred in the thickly settled district from Long Beach to the industrial section south of Los Angeles, where unfavorable geological conditions (made land, water-soaked alluvium) combined with poor structural work to increase the damage. At Long Beach, buildings collapsed, tanks fell through roofs, and houses displaced on foundations. School buildings were among those structures most generally and severely damaged.

The earthquake eliminated all doubts regarding the need for earthquake resistant design for structures in California. So many school buildings were damaged that the Field Act was passed by the California State Legislature on April 10, 1933. The Field Act mandated that school buildings must be earthquake-resistant. If the earthquake had occurred during school hours, the death toll would have been much higher.

My Grandmother used to talk about that quake. She lived in Long Beach at the time. They owned a ski-ball concession at the Pike at the time. My mom was born at St. Mary's. My Mom's family was from CA, and my Father's from Montana. We moved back and forth between the two places during my Growing up years. I lived on El Toro Marine base 'til I was 3. Then it was off to Montana. It was like being a Ping Pong ball. :rotfl:

I was also reading on the main board about the character breakfast changing - that the characters no longer visit the tables but do some sort of show. Anyone following that?
Thanks!

I don't keep up with it. In three cruises we have never made it to a character bfast....

Just wanted to let everyone know...I wrote to Mandy/UKangel who was our original champagne girl who had to cancel this cruise, but we were scheduled to do a mini meet on Nov 1 at WDW. I asked if we were still on for the meet and I heard back from her today that it's a go. I'm so happy because we clicked so well....but we're keeping in touch and doing the mini meet. YEAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Hopefully we will get to cruise with her again in the future.

You be sure and give her a big hug from all of us!

Marilyn, smores are graham crackers, Hershey candy bar topped with a HOT marshmellow, fresh from the campfire. The hot marshmellow melts the chocolate a bit and is very yummmy (this coming from a girl that doesn't really like marshmellows).

Now, if you dine at 50's Prime Time Cafe at MGM, that isn't exactly what you get...not enough chocolate on their version in my opinion.

Off to hit the shower, Peg and I are off to the movies!

I am and if that is the case I think I will just skip it. We will ask our servers when we are on board in Dec and skip if it as described.:sad2:

By the way, ANgie's BDAY is Mar. 10. But not 1933.:rotfl: :rotfl:

March is a good month to have a birthday!!!

Thanks Jackie, (and holly too - I couldn't 'quote' you as you posted within my quote).

The smores sound wonderful and if I am dining anywhere they are served in November I will have to give them a try. We do toast marshmallows, but nothing more.

I remember the Pike as a kid and hearing about my Dad and his friends riding the roller coaster.

I know there are not many Gators here...but Ike Hilliard is going to be a BUC now!! Yeah!

Whenever I am in Oregon, I always forget at least the first time I need gas that you can't pump your own gas. The attendants always know you are from California when you get out of the car. Vice versa you can tell if someone is from Oregon as they wait in the car for someone to pump the gas.

I always turn my gas cap to hear it click three times for the very reason you mention above. When I get my gas in Oregon, I still get out of the car to turn the gas cap. My Suburban will read the check engine light until you get more gas if the gas cap is not tight enough.

Oregon and New Jersey, I think it is NJ, are the 2 states where you cannot pump your own gas. We have been made fun of because of that, but I like the idea. No spilled gas, no stepping in gum, and no freezing your.....self. :rotfl: :rotfl: It is especially nice in the rain. I think it is a little safer all the way around. Plus it does provide a lot of jobs for the teens. And, despite what we are told by the 'pump your own' fanatics, Gas is NOT more expensive here than elsewhere. They keep putting it to a vote here, and we always vote NO. I am beginning to wonder what part of No they don't understand. :rotfl: I do know how to pump gas, simce I managed a gas station/carwash when I was 19. Looks like I will get plenty of practice when we hit the road in the RV. ;)

Yes, March babies are great! ;)

You can't really get authentic S'mores at a restaurant since you really need the campfire to roast the marshmallows. Just not the same toasted over a burner. I like mine just toasted brown, DrHug likes his burnt!

You should have seen DrHug when I was dragging him, kicking and screaming like a little girl onto that Cyclone Racer at the Pike! :lmao: :rotfl: He was a big brave soldier - in uniform at the time too! - and I was literally dragging him to ride it! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Wow, Thanks for that pic Noel. That was the scariest Roller Coaster I have ever been on. I last rode it in March of 1968, when Angie drug me on it. Helicopter gun missions in VietNam didn't scare me as much as that coaster. Whew. FUN.:scared1:

And I did not scream like a little girl! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

We have only one gas station in our city that pumps for you. I love using it in the winter so I don't have to freeze and it doesn't cost any more than the other stations. :thumbsup2

I rode it also and it "cured" me of roller coasters forever!!!
