Holly - definitely have the school call him!
Well, they called him today the same three times they called me. The 3rd call was to tell us he's not allowed to come tomorrow to the first day of spring break day care, and they wanted him picked up right after K at 3:30 because they didn't want him coming to the after school care. :scared: Yup, he was that out of control. The teacher couldn't even get him to lunch because he couldn't stay focused enough to walk single file with the other kids to the cafeteria, so he had to stay behind and was brought his lunch in the office.

ANYWAY, it worked! He called me on his way to pick Tyler up to tell me about all the phone calls today, I told him I already knew, and he finally said, "I feel so bad for him because when I talked to him on the phone he felt so down on himself because he's trying so hard but can't make his body cooperate. OK....I'm willing to give meds a try, but I'm afraid we'll lose the happy kid that Tyler is and that he'll become zombie-like from the meds."

I assured him the doctors don't want him like that either and they'd adjust his dosage if that happens, but that we can't let him continue to have trouble every single day. And neither of us can keep getting multiple phone calls a day at work or miss work when he's suspended. AND to let Tyler flounder isn't fair either. The school psychologist told me today that his IQ score was extremely high, but he's just not able to get that knowledge out academically. How frustrating must that be for him to know that he knows the stuff he's supposed to know but can't get it out.

SO.....GREAT NEWS ---- DAD FINALLY SAID YES TO MEDS!!!!!! Not that I'm all for it, sure it makes me nervous too, but I think sometimes it's needed in conjunction with the other therapies when the situation is extreme.

Now I just have to make sure there's no CM blackout on Sunday or Monday. It's Memorial Day weekend, isn't it?

He knows about most incidents, but is still in denial. About meds, 2 of his sisters had bad experiences with regular meds, so he equates that with what's going on with Tyler (despite many people, including the psychologist, telling him he can't let the past rule what he does with Tyler because the factors are completely different). At the time his sisters were treated, their doctors told them once they reached a certain age, they could just stop their meds cold turkey. One has suffered from depression and the other has had 2 suicide attempts. He's afraid of the same thing happening to Tyler.

I can tell you that one can suffer from depression and attempt suicide w/o ever having been on meds....in fact meds are what have helped me.

I guess I can understand his hesitation but still - tell him to do the research and talk to the drs....meds have come a loooong way since his sisters were on them.

Well it has been a while since I have been on the boards. My DH Grandfather took a nasty spill down some steps and lay there for a few hours until he could crawl to help. We have been sitting with him at the hospital and rehab for the last few weeks. He is home now and on the mend! Thank God for that.

I am now back to mostly lurking trying to catch on to the thread. It moves so quickly and has so many people who are very close. I envy that. I never seem to catch up.

Has everyone gotten their staterooms yet?
What about after cruise plans?
Any news on guest speakers or entertainment?

I am getting so excited and ready to go!

To everyone that needs it here is a huge :grouphug:

I hope everyone is doing well, and God bless all of you.

Kristie
Oh, how awful! But I'm glad your husband's grandfather is on the mend.

Hi Everyone, I am still alive, just running my kishka's off. I think I am now about 200 pages behind on this thread so if anything interesting has happened or there is something I should know about, please pm me with the details or the page # for me to look up.

Holly, Your ex may never see the course that you must take to help Tyler. Mine never did and I finally just had to tell her "either get with the program or get out of my way!" Bottomline is do what you need to do for your son. You have my support and if you ever have any questions I can help with, PM me.

Ok, I am off to work again and I hope by the weekend I can try to catch up. Wait until you see the boys in their new suits on the curise! WOW!
Thank you! Fortunately, the school calling him multiple times today when he had a bid due at 3pm did wonders with "helping" him agree with me and the drs. :thumbsup2

Tell him that's why you have better doctors!!! I hope he doesn't remain stubborn and gives it a try, for Tyler's sake.

Holly - that is fantastic news! And as you said - the drs will be monitoring him and won't let the real Tyler go away. Keep us informed.

This has nothing at all to do with you not being nice (which is so NOT the case anyways)....this has everything to do with what Tyler needs - and if 3 drs say he needs meds....then....he needs meds (and trust me, I'm not one to rush to put anyone on meds, let alone kids--we are a society of over medicated kids IMO). Maybe if the school does contact your ex after every incident then your ex will "see the light". If not, maybe Ian "knows someone" as he lives in Chicago :lmao:

Hang in there
:rotfl: Yup, I think he definitely saw the light today! Especially aftre trying to figure out real quick what to do with him on short notice for tomorrow! ;)

This is GREAT news Holly. It's not fair for it to be so hard and frustrating for Tyler to know what is right and still not be able to control himself to do it. He needs more help.....the meds will enable him to achieve that along with the other therapies. It's not scarry. DGS Kris is still on meds for ADHD and has been since he was diagnosed as a little boy. He does sooooooo much better on them. It really will help Tyler not hurt him. This is GREAT NEWS!!!:woohoo:

All of this is exactly what the psychologist told him. And I also told him depression and suicide attempts also can occur with kids who really are struggling and left untreated. :sad1:

Try to get the extended release Adderall because it helps with the zombie effect. The meds are different now then they were even 5 years ago. These pills are sometimes not covered because they do not have a generic. It is worth a try. Both my friends kids are on it. One was on Riddlen for a while and it made him a zombie. You may have to try different brands to get the right one but don't give up.

Yup! The most recent Dr feels the other 2 therapies won't do any good without meds to help his mind be able to focus on what he's supposed to be doing and remembering in OT and behavioral therapy. :thumbsup2

Holly maybe ex is on the right road now. Maybe he sees that Tyler may need more than just words to help him. I hate when you know a kid is trying their best to be good but just can't.

Thanks! Good stuff to know. I've heard that everybody reacts differently to meds, and it could take a very long time to figure out what works, so I'm glad he agreed so we can start trying now before school starts in the fall.

Exactly.....you gotta give him a fighting chance to make it work. I agree that meds are not the only answer and should not be used in every case, but should be evaluated on an individual need basis and all of Tyler's doctors concur that it will help him. Try it. It will be so good for Tyler and his self esteem. Right about now he must be losing confidence in himself and that is not good. He needs a fighting chance to be as normal as possible so that he can build up his character. He is such a sweet little boy and doesn't deserve all these burdons on him right now. I'm glad he's getting the right help. What a relief!
