So glad I am in the Sunshine State now!

My "oddest" story? The DMV opened a branch in a mall where I worked! Great! I can renew my drivers license! Only they dont take cash! HUH? It says here "for all debts public and private"!

Sorry! No cash!

Argghh! My lovely car has been valued at $1,250 for, um, three years now, I think? WHY doesn't the value go down as the car gets older? Because this idiotic state "needs" its annual $31.25 from me.

Katieeldr, your excise tax should go down.. mine does and I have a Lexus SUV, 4 years old... and it is like 300 or something dollars a year. Stupid taxachusetts...too funny that Mike kept this on his board.. LOLOL He is a former MA person, he knows the score. Deliver me from MA taxes..

Well in their infinite wisdom, they realized they were loosing tax dollars, so they made it legal to buy beer on Sundays as long as the store was within 10 miles of the New Hampshire state line!

Many states have an annual tax on cars similar to Mass's infamous excise tax. New Hampshire does.

Massachusetts achieved notoriety because long ago theirs was "66 dollars per thousand", namely use 6.6 percent instead of 2.5 percent in the calculations above. It was like paying the sales tax twice when you bought the car and paying the sales tax again and again year after year.

Although Mass. was reputed to have somewhat higher liquor prices compared to New Hampshire, for many years in the NH liquor heyday (pre-1980) there were some stores far from the border including one where the Cambridge Galleria is now (near MIT and the science museum) with prices lower than New Hampshire's.

Yes, you can! In fact, you can buy all liquor on Sundays, from noon to six, statewide. Just, if you want to buy any in a supermarket - only three stores from each/any chain, statewide, are permitted to obtain a license to sell. Local examples of which I'm aware: Stop & Shop in Malden (don't know if they all types, or just beer & wine); BJ's in Danvers; and Trader Joe's in Cambridge sell wine.

Oh, and on the four Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas (the original baby step to the current law), they can be open normal hours.

Okay, well, now they're taking cash or check only, except for licenses (or license testing?) they'll take a credit card. There are no more mall locations, afaik - and they're MOVING some long-located registries. I went to Reading late last month because I couldn't find my current registration, and was amazed how easy it was to park... until I got to the door and saw the notice with directions to the new location in Wilmington. That was another interesting experience - there were more people in line to check in/get numbers, than there were people seated waiting to be called. I got my number and it was called as I started walking toward the benches!

For Mike's enjoyment and entertainment and just general informative purposes - and, okay, to let off a little steam

Voters had a chance to abolish the state income tax, but the better-funded anti supporters' scare tactics (higher property taxes, never mind that this would have required a city by city Prop 2.5 override vote by, again, the voters) worked.

There is a move to increase the gasoline (and so, diesel) tax by fifteen, nineteen, twenty-five, up to, possibly, forty cents per gallon. Why does diesel matter? The additional cost to operate delivery trucks will be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices - have consumer prices dropped to pre-gas price-spike levels? I don't think so, and now in Massachusetts they'll go higher.

The Legislature wants to INcrease the state income tax, despite - never mind the move to abolish it - a previous, successful vote by residents to drop it to five percent... which they then overrode/ignored.

They want to increase the sales tax to 6 percent - sure, it's 'only' one percent, but it's a twenty percent increase.

They want to increase the tax on meals (I think to the same six percent).

And then there are the infamous, looming toll hikes - in some cases, by 100%. I don't know about you all, but now it's going to cost me twice as much to get to work?
