Mass shooting at Fort Hood- Killeen

Are they now saying that the other two arrested were NOT involved? That makes PTSD more likely if he is the only one involved.

Planogirl, they released them so I assume they're saying they weren't involved. However, they are looking for another gunman (other than the one they already had.)

Holy Moly! They just said that he was a Mental Health Professional???

It was also reported a while ago that he was about to be deployed and had made statements that he didn't want to go.

No offense to mental health professionals--but that field is not immune to psychological challenges.

I had a friend who went for her Masters in that field and she said you would be amazed.

My last psychologist had also related to me that she suffered similar issues as mine--the reason she conveyed this was to say that "I'm not alone" and to demonstrate what she does to deal with her issues. (she seemed polar opposite and she said that she is now, but it had been a lot of work for her.)

While it is weird-again, not uncommon for someone in that field to have any number of psychological issues that the general public also suffers.

He is a psychiatrist who worked in mental health on active duty who did not want to be deployed to Iraq according to CNN. They also reported he is from Jordan.

The suicide rate among mental health professionals ranks #1 or at least it did when I was practicing in the late 70's and early 80's.

They keep saying that he had 2 handguns. How the heck do you kill 11 people and injure 31 with just those???

i don't know if this has been posted but the Austin American-Statesman newspaper has set up a Twitter feed for their coverage.

There are also several aggregate lists by news organizations

and the Huffington Post has a real time set up of 3 twitter lists.

Actually, I've heard (and again no offense to mental health professionals) that a lot of people who go into the field have some sort of background with dealing with mental health issues in their own lives (either with family members or themselves) and go into it for that exact reason.
They are now saying that the other person that they were looking for is in custody.

Not so wierd, really. Some people go into mental health related fields to help themselves sort through their own issues.

Anyone can have problems and mental health workers are not immune. Maybe thats why some psychologists or psychiatrists are able to relate and be more empathetic with their patients.

Depending on the caliber of the handgun and the proficiency of the marksman, it could happen.

The standard-issue US Army sidearm is a 9mm Beretta semi-automatic that holds 15 rounds in the clip. Military ammunition is full metal jacket, and at close range, if it only hits soft tissue, it will keep right on going. It is very likely that in this situation multiple victims might have been hit by the same round, if they were standing in close lines.

I heard an interview with the base commander, and when asked if the gunman had reloaded, he said that he didn't know. It's really easy to reload this gun, though -- it's designed for very fast handling.

Mental health professionals do tend to be proned to psychological issues. I am in the field (psychology degree) and have worked with mentally ill clients so I can think I can say that without offending. It is a statistic I heard in my very first clinical psychology class and I have also heard that they tend to have a pretty high suicide rate. We really don't know if it is something about that personality that draws them to the field or if it is the field that affects them. Either way, they are definitely at risk like everyone else, and possibly more so.

Sending many good thoughts to the family's of the victims and shooters .

Someone who worked with him is saying that he had said "Muslims should stand up to the aggressors" and that we shouldn't be in the war (and other comments of that sort.)

Now they're saying that he may have been bullied due to his ethnicity and that the two they released MAY have actually been trying to take him down.

CNN says a Press conference will take place within minutes.

Heart goes out to all effected by this.:grouphug:

My husband had 3 workers on base at the time of the shooting. Praise God they are all ok! They are on lock-down & can't get out but thankfully they are ok!

Praise God indeed! It's always nice to hear some good news in the midst of something like this.

Where did you hear that? Considering his line of work and rank, I'd be skeptical of that.

His cousin claimed that in a phone interview with Fox News (I'm assuming you were asking about the first thing.)

I could have been a little clearer, huh?

It's hard to imagine a Major working in a hospital being bullied, I guess it could happen, but it seems unlikely.

WTH? Now they're saying in the press conference that the shooter is not dead (nor is the civilian police officer) and that he's in a condition where his death isn't imminent but there were still 12 people killed and 31 injured.

This whole thing is so...weird. I wonder why they couldn't release the info that he was still alive hours ago.
