Mass shooting at Fort Hood- Killeen

What a horrific act of violence. My heart and prayers goes out to all of the servicemen and their families.

I was thinking the same thing. On CNN, it sounds like they're leaning toward placing the blame on PTS syndrome from tours of duty overseas.

It's heartbreaking to watch the coverage on TV. I can hear the emotion in the voices of the military people they're talking to, and I just know these are people who are trained to control their emotions.

Terrible, awful, tragic, horrible. :(

They just reported he recently converted to Islam :confused3

I think that some people are jumping to some creepy conclusions based on a name. You could be right but you could also be quite wrong.

I really cannot believe you said that.

I can.

A mass shooting and the shooters name is Malik Nadal Hassan?

I will say that is SURPRISES me because it seems like American's of Middle Eastern descent try very hard not to be grouped in with people who do stuff like this (not the best wording - I know- forgive me) - so I can't see why an avg American would do this. I hope this is just a man gone crazy with PTSD - and not terrorism within our own military.

Flame away..

That's what DH said, the PTSD.

I was thinking this too (especially given that this was at the FRC). But with three suspects supposedly involved, doesn't that make it seem less likely that it was caused by PTSD? It seems PTSD induced violence is usually carried out by a single person. I could be wrong about that.

I'm not surprised it was said either. It was my first reaction when reading the name (and reading the fact that he had just converted to Islam definitely reinforced that feeling), but not necessarily the right one. It could have been a lot of things other than internal terrorism and I hope it was.

Maybe on a smaller scale.

Mass killings/injury of this nature are rare. (or it wouldn't have made the news).

There was another mass killing in Killeen in 1991 at a Luby's. George Hennard killed 24 people.

I was born at Ft Hood and both my father and stepfather were stationed there. I spent the first ten years of my life in Killeen. I am in shock.

Boston Tea Party, the story was on "The 15 Most Shocking Mass Killings" (or something like that) on E! News the other day. They focused on a woman whose parents were both killed. Her father was killed first, the woman escaped and told her mother to follow her but she didn't (she stayed with the father.) The woman is now (or was when the special was made) a state lawmaker who has worked to have the concealed weapon law changed. She had a weapon but it was in the car in her glovebox.

I remember reading about that shooting. :(

I was just saying that it was rare--and this act goes beyond your typical murder-suicide. (did I just say typical?--that sounds so wrong. :()

Oh my God, how very sad, our DIL at Ft Bragg called me concerned for their friends. :worried:

My heart breaks for Ft Hood, as my first thought was some poor soldier stress out, had gone off deep end. :sad2:

God help these poor families, our dedicated military, and all they sacrifice.

I agree. It does seem like it had a purpose far more nefarious than simple murder.

They just said on Fox News that a source at Ft. Hood says the two suspects they had in custody have been released and they are looking for another (and of course one was killed.)

This is what DH (USMC veteran) and I were just saying. PTSD doesn't sound very likely considering what is being reported right now. It sounds like something that was well planned, and with multiple shooters, that just doesn't match up to PTSD.

Holy Moly! They just said that he was a Mental Health Professional???

It was also reported a while ago that he was about to be deployed and had made statements that he didn't want to go.
