Is there a place on site to go to a Catholic Mass? We are staying on site with out a car. Thanks! Stephanie

missing one week of Mass isn't bad, just say a little prayer on your own. I knew a preist that was done there and didn't do mass,,go for it, have a fun time AND don't think about it

With all due respect, you're mistaken. Practicing Catholics should know that the Catholic Church teaches that the faithful are obligated to attend Holy Mass (Eucharistic celebration) on days of obligation. Those who deliberately fail in the obligation of attending Sunday Mass commit a grave sin.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church put is thusly:

"The Sunday Eucharist (meaning "Holy Mass") is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. [Canon Law # 1245] Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin." (C.C.C. # 2181)

At the very least, if the OP feels unable to make it to mass because of the circumstances described, she should ask her pastor for dispensation. She might also explore the various car services that could take her to and from the Queen of the Universe shrine. (It's a beautiful church, by the way!) Her situation is not unusual, and the people at her Disney hotel will be more than happy to help her facilitate transportation.

IMHO, if you're spending a few days of fun in Orlando, you can take an hour or two to let God know how grateful you are for it, and pray for those who are not as blessed.

Hi:
We've been attending Mary Queen of the Universe for several years now and we are becoming annoyed at the ten minutes talk given by the priest, before mass, about the gift shop located in the back of the church. We decided this year to attend Holy Family Catholic Church which is located near WDW. I have read several responses from people who have attended Holy Family and they say is more like a family church then Mary Queen of the Universe. I hope they are correct.
I don't have a web site for Holy Family Church but I do have a telephone number so you can call to find out about mass times. 407-876-2211.
If you take a Taxi to church remember to ask the driver to come back and pick you up after church.

ABSOLUTELY!! We can dedicate 1 hr to God while we are at WDW...as for the gift shop fiasco in the Church...well it is a Catholic church after all :rotfl:
I know when I joined the church I was astounded that they charged money for sunday school and vacation bible school having been Baptist before...but I realize the purpose!

BTW I said that VERY TOUNGE IN CHEEK!! :teeth:

I am also interested in mass close to the WDW...we will not have a car though :confused3

We've always gone to the shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe church also. If anyone is upset about mass not starting at the exact time - so be it. I realize the reason they must do this is due to the fact that SO MANY people are out-of-towners and do not realize how long it takes to get from the vacation spots and to park due to the long lines of getting into the parking lot. They might just make these announcements for people so that when mass does begin it is not constantly interrupted by late comers. Also, the first time we attended we didn't know what they had to offer. I even told my husband we need to make sure we visit all they have to offer. It is really nice.

I loved this church and for it to not be my home parish - I felt at home.

Devoting just ONE HOUR on Sunday morning or Saturday evening is not much to give back to God - it is your obligation as a practicing Catholic. I think what may have happened with the poster that said missing a week - was they misunderstood and thought you had to attend daily. Let's not forget that a lot of individuals do not understand (or want to for that mater) Catholicism.

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church....As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do."
—Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, preface to Radio Replies

When we are traveling with my brother, who is a Catholic priest, he says Mass for us....as he did yesterday here at BWV. I am very grateful for that, believe me.

We are not fans of the Queen of the Universe Church. IMHO, we have met several clerks who work in the store that are downright nasty on several occasions. As for Mass starting late, that is unacceptable to me. We no longer attend Mass there, but when we did, we used a taxi as we rarely rent a car. Starting Mass 15 minutes late is just not right. Not everyone has the luxury of staying there for an indefinite period of time. As for the stragglers, I have heard several ushers giving them quite a dressing-down. You can't have it both ways. If I can make Mass on time - which I do - it can start on time.

Here is the website for Holy Family Catholic Church in Orlando.
http://www.holyfamilyorlando.org/

We've been there as well as Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine. We truly enjoyed both places. We've also taken a cab when we didn't have a car. Back in 2003, Mears shuttle used to do a pick up at the resorts for Mass. I'm not sure if they still do that, but you can as when you check in.

Enjoy!

We went in May to an earlier mass and it did start on time for a change. I was surprised.

...of arriving at the shrine 5-10 minutes or so after the posted mass time. That way, we usually miss the schpiel at the start :teeth:

Having said that: since the shrine isn't a parish, per se, they rely entirely on donations from tourists to survive. It's useful, I guess, for them to remind people of that. Also, the gift shop is really excellent, and well worth a visit.

I'm close friends with several catholic priests, I was born and raised catholic and went to catholic schools from K-12th grade. According to all of my friends that are practicing catholic priests, in good standing with the church, when on a vacation, it is acceptible to skip mass.

I was told, if it becomes a hassel (especially an expensive one, like paying for a shuttle or cab service) then it is okay to take some time out of your Sunday for prayer. They suggest to just put the money you would spend on a cab or shuttle in the collection when you return to your home church. Help the poor and the church as opposed to cabbies or an out of town church.

I figure this makes sense...we usually drive, so its not a problem for us, but I get frustrated with the queen of the universe shrine....I feel like i need binoculars. its so distant and the gift shop..sigh...

...all I can tell you is what's in the catechism, which I posted earlier. You might ask your priest friends if they are aware of this. A lot of people aren't.

I'm also a practicing Catholic. I'll be ordained a permanent deacon in 2007.

We go to Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine every time we're in Disney - the 6pm Sat evening mass is a good option. It's not too far, and we feel good about having a little bit of time to peacefully spend with the Lord while on vacation. Then we carry God with us through our vacation in many ways. Thank God for the blessing of us all being fortunate enough to be able to go to such a sweet and joyful place like Disney! Peace. :sunny:

It's remained civil, but it is still off topic.

Once again - the question was is there mass on site. The answer is no.

PLEASE don't turn this into a debate.

TOLERANCE is a good trait for a deacon.

It also says in the bible "Judge not lest ye be judged"

Greg K is correct....

2181 Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin

If for some reason you didn't want to pay the taxi-cab fare or feel like taking time away from your Disney vacation to go to mass, then please fess this reason up to your parish priest and ask for a dispensation for that Sunday's obligation. Don't fib and say that mass was unavailable where you're going on vacation. Our priest even goes to lengths to promote the website masstimes (in our parish bulletin) so that parishioners will know what is available and can plan accordingly.

We don't miss mass unless we're sick and/or having a baby. Mom of 4 with one on the way.

Just a note -

No one was judging anyone else. Just trying to relay the correct facts.
So many people get all bound in a ball when you do so. It's the same for everything else in the world but most people get tightly wound when "religion" comes up. I just try to put out the real deal and whatever someone decides to do is up to them.

But this is the case with so many other threads - off the original topic and/or question. It was posted by someone that something missing mass for that week would be okay. That statement needed to be corrected that's all. What is so wrong with that? If someone states something as incorrect in any other thread do they always get the "this is off-topic" blurb? I am new here so I haven't noticed too many of those yet. And some topics that I have looked at have been off from the original post.

If someone said that you could go to Liberty Tree Tavern on certain days and get 40% off of your meal and no one corrected them it wouldn't be right. A little different situation used as example. Lots of people have questions regarding the new AP system, lots of questions - VARIETY of answers - variety of opinions. The case for Sunday obligation just happens to have a set a guidelines to go by - the Catechism of the Catholic Church - as was stated. I do understand that this is not a religious forum and do not plan to use it as such. If one wants that they have plenty of sites available for them to go to.

Grave sin??

:earseek:

This is exactly why I left the RC Church and became an Episcopalian. Wound up liking the Episcopal Church so much, in fact, that I became an Episcopal priest!
