Looking for a not-too-sweet Mashed Sweet Potato recipe... I love sweet potato, but not when it is sticky sweet.

I'd make them like you would regular mashed potatos and go from there.

I boil them first and then peel them (so much easier). Then using a hand blender I whipe them with some heavy cream, butter, cinnamon, and just a touch of maple syrup.

We love them 'plain'... I chunk them into aprox. two inch pieces... I don't peel because the skins just slide off after cooking. Boil until tender, pull off the skins and mash with real butter and a few tablespoons of milk or half & half.

They are naturally sweet enough for me... but MariDisney's version sounds good too.

Ooooo, those do sound good. Did you use red potatoes. I have white, and idaho. I really hate the idea, of going back to the grocery, after my 2 hour trip tonight.

I'm sure any potato would be fine. :)

We love the sweet mashed potatoes that Outback "used" to have, so my mom went to the website and found the recipe for them so we are making them Thursday...

BTW: Mom put the sweet potatoes int he microwave and pressed baked potato and she said that the skin came right off, while they were still warm...

I agree. I love sweet potatoes. And find that they are sweet enough on their own. I don't like them with marshmallows, sugar or syrup added. Too sweet! My favorite way to serve sweet potatoes is simply bake them. Add a little butter and sour cream. Yummy. I'll probably try this recipe for Thanksgiving...it is a Garlic Sweet Potato Mash. Looks very simple but good.

My mom used to make them like Rella Bella, except she would also add a very small amount of vanilla. :goodvibes

Wow, I'm from Australia and have never considered that people would add lollies, sugar or maple syrup to their veggies.
You learn something every day!!!!

I always make them mashed, that's the way my hubby likes them. I don't do recipes, but IMO it works better to go by taste anyhow because some are sweeter naturally than others. I just add butter and a little bit of brown sugar until I get the flavor I'm looking for. I've found that lots of people who always detested the yams/sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving love them this way.

I bake them first, take the skins off, then mash them. Add butter, some brown sugar, and bourbon :)

When I mash mine I use a little brown sugar and cinnamon, also to cut the sweet I had a little OJ to mine. Gives them a little somethin different.

Oh Trish... here's a "traditional" Thanksgiving version.
Just so you know how non-traditional we are saying we don't like them sweet! :goodvibes

SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

1 can pineapple slices
2 lg. cans sweet potatoes or yams
3 tbsp. butter
1/2 c. maple syrup
Cinnamon
Mace
Miniature marshmallows

Spray baking dish with Pam. Drain liquids from pineapple and sweet potatoes. Reserve 2 slices of pineapple for top. Slice up sweet potatoes. Line sides of 8"x8" baking dish or 3 quart casserole dish with pineapple and pour sweet potatoes into dish. Sprinkle cinnamon and mace over sweet potatoes. Pat with butter. Put extra slices of pineapple on top. Pour maple syrup over mixture. Bake for about 30 minutes at 325 degrees.

Put a layer of miniature marshmallows over top of hot mixture. Place back in oven and bake until top of marshmallows has turned golden brown. This casserole can also be prepared in a microwave oven except for the browning of the marshmallows. Check your microwave directions for cooking time. to brown the marshmallows, heat oven to 425 degrees and cook for approximately 8 to 10 minutes, or until marshmallows are toasty or golden brown.

Yes, it's an unfortunate tradition I wish they would do away with.

Boston Market makes the worst sickly-sweet, sweet potatoes.

Don't they get they are called "sweet" potatoes because they are already sweet? :confused3
