Quick question...I intend to do research, but since Im on here...

I live in New England, but we might get married in FL if we can work out last minute details...

Im stumped on how marriage licenses work...if we live in NE but get married in another state, do we get a license for both? of the state we live, or the state we get married?! anyone done this before?

I'm pretty sure that you just need a license for the state that you get married in.

DH and I both lived in NC and we got married in MA ...where I was from. We needed a MA license , which required bloodtests. DH wasn't too happy because you don't ( or didn't ) need all of that in North Carolina.

oh my! :sad2: my fiance doesnt do too well with needles and were in MA. we may have to get married elsewhere once he hears that!!

You just need a license for the state you are getting married in, we got married in Florida and it was super easy, no blood work required, we just had to read this small booklet, sign some papers and pay the fee.

Pretty sure you need it only for the state you get married in. Do research it and also research what the requirements are for the state you plan to get married in. Some require blood tests, some don't (mine doesn't for example). Some require wait periods, some don't and so on.

Yep, my son just got married down here and he and his now wife went to city hall, filled out a form, paid their money and got their license. Be aware though you cannot get married the same day you get your license so don't wait until the last minute.

yeah see through some research, Ive seen almost a 3 days period in which you then will have 48 hrs to actually get married... :scared1:

so random ?

how do people get married in, vegas, or a chapel anywhere? if you do it as a spur of the moment, you clearly havent stopped at the town hall JUST IN CASE you may get married ....How does that work,,,:confused3

another question stemming from the original! oh how I love to learn! :rotfl:

Las Vegas is a completely different animal:

http://www.vegas.com/weddings/legal.html

Application:A man and woman who are unrelated and are both at least 18 years old may be issued a marriage license in Clark County. Proof of age may be required. Both must appear at the Marriage License Bureau in the County Courthouse, at 200 S. 3rd Street, 1st floor.

Blood test, waiting periods:In Clark County, blood tests are not required and there is no waiting period.

Some states have a waiting period. Nevada (at least the county Vegas is in) doesn't. But New Jersey does, so yes, all the weddings at chapels in Atlantic City aren't quite spur-of-the-moment. Maybe spur-of-the-weekend, LOL!

In Missouri, there is no waiting period, but if you want to get married at the county courthouse, they only do weddings one day a week. So your "wait" then could be anywhere from zero to six days.

We live in WA state but got married in Canada (Ontario) because both of our families live there. Like many PP's - no waiting period, no blood work, etc.

My DH's cousin got married spur of the moment at 19 (also in Ontario) and he and his GF chose to go one city over from where they lived because City Hall closed earlier in the day in the city where they lived - it was REALLY spur of the moment. :lmao: Perhaps a waiting period would have benefitted them as the marriage only lasted a few months...

Anyway, it's very easy to get married in a different state from where you live. Just do a google search for "______ state marriage license requirements" and it'll tell you what you need to do. Some states are have separate requirements for different counties - but a Google search will tell you that. Also, some states you have to apply in person for the license and some states will allow you to apply by mail and receive the license before you go. The only thing is that if you're going to need to go through the state that you get married in to get your marriage certificate or "official" copies - it can be a bit of a pain because you can't just run into an office if you need it really quickly for something.

Here, I'll make it easy for you;

you can apply for a florida marriage license thru the mail with the brevard county clerk. that's how most disney weddings do it when coming from out of state. very easy. the cost was 93.50, no waiting period, no blood work.

We got married on Leap Day in Daytona Beach and just paid the money for the license there, got a copy and filed it at the courthouse in our local town when we got back. We live in GA but got married there because they don't do blood tests and I don't do needles!:rolleyes1

we are from Mass but got married in Hawaii.. We just got the marriage license in Hawaii a few days ahead of time and we were all set!

GA doesn't do blood tests anymore. I got married Nov. 1st. Got the lic on the same day. They stopped it somewhere between 2001 and 2004. I had to have it for my first marriage and my sister did not have to have it for her marriage in 04.

I actually just got married in Atlantic City. There is a 3-day waiting period from when you apply, to when you can pick up your license. And you can't do either on a weekend. So I applied for mine on Monday, went home for a couple of days (we live about 3 hours away), then picked it up on Friday and the wedding was Saturday.

We had a relative in our family who was pretty dense. When he was getting married we had him believing, like a driver's license, that everytime he moved to another state he had to get it renewed. Four years after he was married his brother asked him when it expired. He explained to him that the reason he was married all these years was she would beat him to city hall and renew it before he could get there to cancel it. (Now for that ocean front property in Kansas).

Perfect answer!

We married in a certain county in Oregon, though we lived in Washington state. Googled the county and marriage license together, found the website, found the instructions. Super-simple.

And since we were married on a Sunday and had a delayed honeymoon, on Monday we took our license (with all the proper signatures on it) to the clerk on our own (our ULC minister had a baby at home in Seattle and left an hour after the ceremony to get back to his family), which was *surprisingly* romantic. :)

MA has gay marriages but they have the antiquated law about requiring blood tests? :confused3
