March 13th 2011 Fiesta time on the Wonder!

I posted in the main forum but thought I would share here, as well. DH was laid off from his job yesterday. Worked for his employer for 15 years and in less than 15 minutes, it was all over and he was on his way out the door. DH is the primary bread winner and the news is devastating but we are choosing to remain positive and look at this as an opportunity for a brighter future.

So, there's been immediate discussion about budget and money and...cruise. I don't want to make a knee-jerk decision about the cruise but I want to make the right, smart decision. Clearly, as a family, we are looking forward to the cruise but are debating if it's right for us to go now?

If we decide to cancel, does anyone know how much of our funding DCL will keep?

Jac...I know you are also from Chandler. Where did he work? I thought layoffs around here were pretty much done?? This also happened to us before a trip to Disneyworld and we decided to go ahead and make it the best trip ever.."we deserved it"!! When we got home he got a call for an employer and I thought what if I had decided to cancel and then we got that news and there was no reason to have cancelled!! He did take the job and it has turned out to be FAR better than the one he had before! Just try to remember that sometimes when a door is shut that another window is opened!

Attention moms of cheer participants! Madeline and Taylor want to know which girls can do standing tumbling on hard floor. They will probably have Ash doing standing tucks. If anyone else can do that or standing handsprings on a regular floor, let me know, they want to put it in the routine. Neither older girls wants to, I think they are planning on just basing a simple stunt and not doing too much themselves.

Kenna can do a standing backhandspring...

Jac,

So sorry to hear this about the layoff. I'm sure you've called DCL or your TA to better understand the travel insurance provisions.

If you get 100% of your money back, I'd think long and hard about going that direction. Prob a wise choice. Ultimately though it is YOUR choice so do what is right in your heart!

If you lose much of your money OR especially only can postpone it to a later date, I'd encourage you to still join us. As others have said, just be prudent with your onboard purchases and excursions. This will be a real escape for your family and have a great positive impact on everyone's outlook and energy...ready to face the job hunt.

OMG Jac, I am so sorry to hear this! This must be very scary for all of you. As many others have suggested, since you have already paid for the cruise and flights , you could try to claw back on shore excursions etc.. and still make the trip. We live by the mantra when a door closes a window opens even though it is the hardest thing to hear sometimes.

You are in our thoughts.

Hello all of you been there done that:

We have been intending on having a family portrait done for a while now. With the upcoming cruise with both a formal and semi formal dining night (so we'll have nice clothes with us), we thought it would be a nice idea to have this done on our vacation.

Is it possible to arrange a private session with the Shipboard Photographers? Where would I do this? Is there sitting fee? I have not been able to find info on this on DCL's site.

Also we are travelling with another party. For the various photo ops throughout the ship; embarkation, on the way to dinner, etc can each group do a separate pose and then one with all of us together? Or do they basically take one quick shot and then herd you along?

Thank You
EGP

Normally you can only "reserve" a photographer for special events like weddings, vow renewals, etc.

You do have many, many opportunites for family portraits and I've not ever felt rushed. I'm sure you'll get some great pics. They do let you mix up the groups. Oh, and no sitting fee. All the shots are on "spec."

Hope this helps. I am so sorry to hear of the job loss. Our prayers are with you!!

Thank you! We did buy DCL Travel Insurance and I found the brochure. If we decided to cancel, we'd get 100% of our cruise price back..

I am SO sorry.

Thank you. I was just telling my DH, it feels like there's been a death in the family. The sun is so bright today but it feels so dark, all at the same time. Strange.

JDBlair, What kind of a room do you have? Can you downgrade to save a little money?? I hope you don't have to cancel.....You might need this trip to get your spirits up & deal with reality when you get home~!

We have a oceanview room on deck 2. I think the ship is full so I don't think we can downgrade. I haven't called about it though. But I think you're exactly right about the spririts. I think going may not be the smartest decision to make but what it would do for our spirits would be priceless.

I am so sorry to hear this news...:grouphug:
I hope you can still come along......since the cruise and flight are already paid in full......and the refund might not be enough to justify canceling.
I can imagine it must be a very scary time right now.

Our first cruise we were on an extreme tight budget. We decided to pass on all the port adventures and alcohol on board....no spa treatments...
We did not spend a lot of extras, and it was one our favorite cruises. A lot of wonderful family time, at the beach, and on the ship.

Thank you!! I think it would be less scary if we knew exactly what was coming. There are so many unanswered questions: How much will he get in unemployment? How long will he be unemployed? It's so much easier to plan for these things when you know how long it will all last! LOL :rotfl:

There have been many times in my life when money was tight and I look back and remember how creative I was able to get with money and made it in to a game of sorts.

That is awful! We were in the same boat a couple of years ago. My husband has a new job now but about 1/2 of what he use to make. I say go ahead and go on vacation, you've already paid for it! Make some memories, even if you can't afford to do any excursions. You just won't get enough of your money back to make canceling a good option.

Good Luck and I'll be praying for you!
Misand:sad1:

Thank you for the prayers. They are truly appreciated. I'm sorry to hear that your family went through the same thing. It's just not been great in this country and so much stress on families. I really hope these corporate greedy jerks sleep well at night!

DH worked for a architectural firm HQ'd in Kansas City. They've been struggling really bad this past year. There's just not a lot of building going on and so it hurts firms like DH.

I absolutely consider this a blessing. DH's company has been laying off since last January and it's been incredibly stressful. Just this past November I finally told DH I didn't know whether to hope he'd just hurry and lose his job so we could move on from this nightmare. Looking back, I see that I must have come to peace with the fact that he would probably lose his job soon and began preparing myself for it. I'm a firm believer that God will provide, He always has and He always will. I just also know that it's done on His terms and involves a lot of trust on our part.

Thank you. At this point we've just decided to move forward as though we're going on the cruise. We know we have the option to cancel or postpone if we have to. But for right now, we're gonna plan on going with the understanding there will be no excursions, bar tab, etc. I told DH we'll get to find out what it's like to cruise on the money you paid for the cruise and not much more!

Thank you. That's very nice of you. This is a door that needed to be closed. DH was miserable there and quite honestly, it was making all of us miserable. In a sense, we're relieved it's finally over and we can move on to the next thing.

:grouphug: I do appreciate everyone's kind comments and support for my family. I know we're "strangers" in a sense but it's been very comforting to read your responses. I was telling DH it feels like there's been a death in the family or something. It's been a strange day. But I'm thinking positive and I'm looking forward to the future with an open heart.

Missing cabin numbers for: Sabrinaoxox
Disneyluvbug

I need them for the fish extender list, I sent you both an email tonight! Thanks!

FYI - we live in Kansas City and tonight at Target I found little buckets with shovel and watering can for the beach in the toy section for 3 bucks. They are large enough for the kids to have something fun to play with in the sand but small enough to not take up too much packing space and was the right price!:thumbsup2 Thought I would share!

I told DH we'll get to find out what it's like to cruise on the money you paid for the cruise and not much more!

:cheer2:Welcome to the Club!!! We have found we'd much rather bring extra people with us on a cruise than spend money on extras...last cruise we took our parents, this cruise we're taking 3 extra kids...there really is soo much to see on your own and not have to spend money on excursions...for me, just soaking up the culture....meeting smiling faces and enjoying the blessings of being with friends and family are the TOPS!! :)

Hope y'all keep on the track of going and things pick up for your dh!! We had 2 house payments for 31 months...essentially the mortgages/utilities were what he made in a month..dh has been working 2 jobs for 3 years to catch up and get us to the point of no debt..I've taken on writing classes (homeschool 3) for other families and we have cut our misc (food/gas) budget from about $1500 a month to $500...we're just creative with rice/beans/veggies and do NOT eat out 1/10th what we used to..maybe once a week if that.

Hope to see you soon!
Tara

JDBlair,
our sincere condolences regarding your DH recent job situation. I can certainly relate to his situation. Perseverance is the key. Good luck.

We have friends that just returned on the Wonder last Sunday. The daily "Personal Navigator" handout noted that brunch could be had in the Triton dining room from 9:00A.M. to Noon. Anyone know if this is worth the effort?

Our prayers are with your family in this hard time. Remember God's timing is not to early, not too late but just perfect! My DH was laid off about a year ago and he is now taking care of the home and our 2 year old. I am working full time and this is a total unsuspected switch of roles for us but it has worked perfectly for our family and God has provided wonderfully. Turn to your faith and you will find that peace.
Teresa

Jac just got on the board for the first time today and I'm sorry about your husbands job. We had the same experience two years ago, husband was sole provider but god took care of us, I found a job 3 months after he got laid off and he was called back to his job 9 months later. God will provide. I have to say those 9 months were stressful but we look back at them and smile now knowing what we were able to go through and be ok at the end. It really show you how strong you and the family are. What is it that your husband does? I do hope you can still come on the cruise. Kathy

Is it too late to be added to the fish extender list?? I tried to pm dicecat, but I didn't it wouldn't let me because I didn't have enough posts yet:goodvibes

The buffet is great , but can get busy, and usually serves the same type of breakfast each morning......still delicious, but redundant after a while.
A buffet is also served in Parrot Cay as well....if you didn't already know that.

The buffet on deck 9 is a cafeteria style buffet and Parrot Cay is a restaurant style buffet .
Parrot Cay is a tropical restaurant, colourful, loud, and the waiters wear tropical shirts.

Tritons is a higher end restaurant, the nicest of the three restaurants you will dine in on your rotation. (the third is Animators palate and is like a cartoon setting... Black and white and does not serve breakfast or lunch).Tritons is a table service, sit down and order from a menu restaurant. Our favorite! I love the table service, and this is where we usually chose to dine in the morning.
Is it worth the effort? Not quite sure what you mean. We take our time dining so yes, it is longer, but more relaxing , and a nicer atmosphere.

I'm sorry, we are closed! But I'd be happy to add you to our general cruise list, and keep you in the loop for the meet and stuff. When you have 10 PMs (and you can post several times with one question each or something) send me: Names, ages of kids, dining seating, hometown, occupations, cabin number, and what you are doing before and after cruise (like a hotel stay or just going home) and email address.

Sorry about the FE, we closed it last week!

Woke up today pumped!! So excited that in 4 weeks we will be getting our cruise! So much to do and so little time! Today I am going to attempt to make shirts for our family and bows for the girls. Finishing up our FE and packing! I don't know if I can hold all this excitement in much longer! :yay:
