Marathon Weekend 2026

SAFD: I have always costumed or at least worn a character t-shirt for every runDisney race, but I'm a little burned out on it frankly and not sure I will this time. I'm running with someone who is distinctly not a Disney guy and he has played along twice already in group costuming with me but if he's not into it this time, I probably won't. It is fun to see everybody else though! Definitely adds to the fun of the experience.

SAFD: I didn't costume when I first did rD back in 2009 and 2011, and then for my return to running in 2022 I really embraced the costuming and had a lot of fun with it.
I know what "bounding" is, but if I'm going to do a character, I want to do it with as much fidelity as possible, so my costumes have reflected that. When I did Deadpool, I even had a mask that I wanted to wear, but it was too impractical, not to mention frowned upon by Dis, so I just wore my Deadpool baseball cap. But gloves and props? Oh yeah.
This year? I'd like to for the half, unsure about the full. I still haven't started on a costume yet, which is problematic. I've been focused on other priorities, and other than weekday training, just haven't started to get myself mentally spooled up for MW 2026 yet.
In my defense, I've been focused on getting one of my little airplanes signed off for flight.

SAFD: I love wearing costumes for Disney races. So far my plan is:
5k: Alien onesie (the aliens from toy story) for the 5k space theme
10k: Purple jumpsuit to be Gadget Hackwrench to go with chip and dale - also planning to make a giant wrench out of foam
Half: The idea in my head right now is to dress as a mighty duck - for Donald and Goofy's storybook seems to be sports comedy
Full: No idea yet but probably Dopey themed in some way

SAFD: I am also not a costume person. I am a hot sweaty mess when I run so I can’t even imagine having more on than I have to. I am always in awe of the people who go all out with them though!
Me too!!! I’m overstimulated with what little I have. Can’t imagine running in some of those costumes. I love looking at them though! Super fun to spectate!

SAFD: I’m more of a bounding girl. Partly because extra things just overstimulate me so much it adds to much mental fatigue. And partly due to expense. My other RD races, with the exception of a few cheaper costume items that pulled an outfit together, I don’t buy anything I won’t wear on a normal run/race/errands, etc. I can justify the expense to DH that way.

For the marathon though…I am doing classic Minnie. I know it’s not very original/creative but I was flipping through inspiration pics with my dad and he absolutely lit up when he saw a minnie outfit. He had a stroke a couple of years ago, which has altered a lot about his personality. The fact the Minnie costume had him smiling from ear to ear and everything else I showed him was an empty stare, it solidified it for me. Minnie it is; for my dad!🥰

Goodness, must be some dust in here getting in my eyes.....

SAFD: Had never done a costume until last year's 10k Group Costume and that was lots of fun. I do want to start getting a little more creative with my rD runs but haven't come up with anything yet for this year - mostly as I still havent' really been focused on MW.

I am thinking if I do anything this year it will be more bounding for the half. For the full I'll want to stay as close to what I'd normally wear for a run as possible.

If I do 2027 I'm going to have to start thinking about it right from registration.

I am still bummed that it was so cold and most of us kept our cold-weather layers on.

I’m so worried about it being cold! I’ve been studying all the weather models and they are all different! Ranging from miserable, cold, rain, to warm to hotter than normal. How is that possible?!

Since we’re talking costumes… my skirt for the full is 95% done! Just need to finish sewing the band to the skirt. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out if I do say so myself!
It’s gorgeous! You did a great job!

Because it is three months away and the weather can be almost anything. I've participated in five Marathon Weekends and have had freezing cold, so hot they shorten the marathon, a shortened half due to rain storms and everything in between. And that's from a small sample size.

SaFD: I do bounding more than costumes, but at least everything touching my skin is tech. I can’t do props since I don’t want to carry those, even for a 5k. I am dressing as Jane for one of the races at Princess and nixed her umbrella. I included it in a visor I got from Etsy.

SAFD: I love seeing the creativity of others but it's not my wheelhouse. I am a sweat demon and like to wear as little as possible when running. It's half tights, tank/loose run shirt and backwards cap for me. There is definitely some envy watching others get into the spirit and be super creative but I know I would be miserable. I participated in a Grinch Run last year, hated it. I was soaked even with the weather in the 30's and all the body cover was suffocating.

Run gear is tested and ready. I have a local half this coming weekend that I will test out my shoes that will be for the marathon in January.

Just pack for every possibility. Florida in January is ..... unpredictable. After MW 2017 where 3 days before they were forecasting hotter than normal weather that turned into a cancelled half due to a cold front that resulted thunderstorms and a full that started below freezing and never got warm enough to take off my jacket. It was so cold that morning they opened the merch tent before the race so people could buy jackets and hoodies.

I now pack for winter, summer and everything in-between. Don't trust the forecast even a few days ahead of time.

Every year, about ten days out, the subject of weather forecasts will come up. Every year, people will start to freak about one website or another's prediction that it is going to be hot or cold or rain or snow. And every year, all of the Floridians will remind the rest of the world not to believe the weather forecasts until, at most, 12-24 hours in advance. And even then, you still need to be aware that things could still change.

For race weekends, I have the following items on standby:

- For rain - A running raincoat (i.e. something light that breathes), a hat (keeps the rain out of your face), disposable ponchos (pro-tip: bring an extra one to cover your feet while waiting in the corrals), throwaway towel or cushion to sit on and keep your butt dry
- For heat - tank top, sweat towel, ice bandana, multiple water bottles, sunscreen
- For cold - throwaway sweatshirts, sweatpants, and blankets (if I see something cheap throughout the year, I pick them up), mylar blankets or ponchos (the ponchos do double duty as rain gear and are invaluable if it is both raining and cold), thin gloves, multiple packs of disposable hand warmers, a running hat, full length running tights and lightweight (non-throwaway) fleece jacket, arm sleeves (I cannot emphasize what a game changer these are!), I've also used my running raincoat as an additional layer, particularly if it's windy

If you look at this list, you'll notice that most of the items won't take up too much room in your luggage if you throw them in "just in case." For this year's MW, I wound up shipping my throwaway gear to an Orlando-based friend since I was doing Dopey and my friend was also doing two races so I had 6 blankets plus my sweats and shipping was cheaper - and easier - than bringing an extra piece of luggage. I was so incredibly grateful to have them and even ran the first two miles of the marathon wearing my blanket (note: you need to dispose of the mylar blankets before you start).

I know that this is a controversial opinion, but I would rather have it be cold than hot. First off, I'm from the Northeast so I'm used to it, but also there are many things you can do to stay warm. There are only so many things you can do to cool off in the heat.
