Marathon Weekend 2025

SAFD: Oddly enough, my chafing issues seem to have decreased in recent years. Unforutnately though it means I'm not as consistent in preparing for it! I used to use BodyGlide but then switched to Squirrel's Nut Butter which worked better for me but does feel more greasy. The other area I would have issues are the arches of my feet and toes. I discovered Foot Goo and it has always done the trick.

I wear bike style shorts that are usually 6-7 inches long, so that covers thigh chafing. Janji pace shorts are my go to, I have 3 pairs and want more. I also like Crowned Athletics bike shorts and Constantia 50 mile shorts, although I’m not super fond of the Constantia fabric so I probably won’t buy any more. I definitely want more Crowned shorts but they don’t have many options.

For long runs, I apply Vaseline around the bottom of my sports bra, the tops of the straps, and my bikini line. So far I haven’t had any huge issues, but we’ll see as I get into longer runs.

Thank you for dropping the short brand! I always wear old navy legging crops even in the heat just to stave off chafe. I've been ok so far, but man I wanna try shorts that don't roll or the seam doesn't feel weird against my other leg
I will say, it took me like 2+ months to get my shorts and it seems like the whole “company” is perpetually on the verge of closing because their availability is super weird. CVG might be comparable but I don’t know.

I will say that the shorts material seems pretty comparable to the old navy powersoft, but not as stretchy/more compressive.

Ah that's helpful, thank you!

SAFD: Ironic that this is this week's topic, considering it's the number one reason I can't imagine doing a half a day after the marathon.

Maybe TMI, but I get very bad chafing on the inner sides of my foot near the arch. Usually, I feel my skin completely split between mile 16 to 20 depending on how diligent I've been with my precautions.

I've tried every sock and shoe combo under the sun, but the only thing I've found that helps is routinely moisturizing the area in the days leading up to the race, the morning of spraying a couple layers of liquid bandage on the surface, then adding a layer of petroleum jelly (bodyglide didn't provide enough of a barrier.) Unfortunately, KT tape made the problem even worse. Fortunately, it's only been a problem at the marathon distance.

SAFD: In addition to plenty of BodyGlide, wearing a shirt that doesn't move is a big help in preventing chafing too. Whether it's a tri-style compression top or a regular running top held down by a fuel belt, almost anything is better than a baggy running shirt flopping around.

SAFD:
I have been pretty lucky, I don’t chafe too much. But when it is really humid I tend to have two areas that create not so great moments in the shower post run! To combat this on long hot runs - just about every Disney World marathon I can remember - I use SNB in an unmentionable region and I wear a longer undershort that does a great job protecting my inner thighs. These two steps have made a world of difference for me!

SAFD:
For me, for super long runs (marathons) or really humid or rainy runs, I use 2Toms on my toes. Body Glide did not work to prevent blisters, but 2Toms and toe socks usually does the trick. For other areas I’d rather not mention, I use a Body Glide cream - Skin Glide. It is pretty easy to apply.
When I first started to run, and I wore ‘swishy shorts’, deodorant worked great to prevent thigh rub chafing issues.

SAFD: My go to for chaffing is the Gold Bond Friction Defense stick. I like it better than Body Glide because it rubs on thicker. I throw this on the inside of my legs, along with wearing compression shorts for long runs. For marathon runs, I will also cover the lower part of my arm pits with it. As a gag Xmas stocking gift, my wife got me a box of men's nipple covers for running. These actually have been a heaven sent. I have worn them for each marathon the past three years and they work like a charm.

SAFD: I used to use Body Glide, but now I use Sport Shield wet wipes because it so easy to carry a pack in my running belt. I don't chafe much, mostly because I wear compression shorts with at least a 4" inseam, and I make sure all my costumes have tech gear any place that touches my skin. The one place, and it's why I'm so picky about sports bras, is on both sides of my torso, under my arm pits if the bra isn't the perfect fit.

MAFD: I'm going on travel for the next 9 days and didn't get a run in yesterday, but cool(er) temps this morning had my motivated to get in one last run before being on airplanes and tour buses. I looked for a race in Dublin for next weekend, but didn't find one. Anyway, 3.7 miles at a mid-10 pace to start my morning. If I get a chance this coming week, I'll try to get in a run or two.

As for chafing: I've posted before about the men's tights with a phone pocket that I've found. The creams and glides are ok, but history shows that I need the physical barrier for my large muscular thighs.

I've used Injinji socks in the past, including last January and I still wind up with some blisters on my little toes during the full. I will definitely try the Gurney Goo, as I just ordered some online. For a half, I don't seem to have issues with foot blisters, but this past Jan during the full they surfaced right around BB. Grrr.
I have some of the adhesive nip guards, and cannot recommend them enough. Even a half leaves me feeling very tender there if I'm wearing a moisture-wicking shirt, and I can't imagine what a full would be like. Money well spent.
