Marathon Weekend 2025

Trying to figure out what fancy features these medals will have:

5k: nothing?
10: def looks like a slider
Half: can't really tell but looks like Donald and Daisy are separated from the base in some way
Full: think Mickey and Minnie are on springs
Goofy: can't figure out this one either
Dopey: outer portion can be rotated to reveal the "finisher" portion

I think the medals are nice, nothing stands out as amazing, I feel like they are running out of ideas though (after so many years how could you not).

5k - Reminds me of prior years
10k - My favorite, very cute, love them "holding" the 10k
Half - Most unique, love Epcot in the background, colors are ehhh
Full - Cute but the marathon aspect doesn't stand out
Goofy - Very nice, lots of detail, nice anniversary call out without being in your face
Dopey - I love the design! I agree the color is a bit odd and I initially thought it was more of a gold (which I liked) but I see the colors may be somewhat misleading with the filters used...I am tired of purple medals so I honestly like the gold or whatever it is

I personally wouldn't mind if they went back to some of the older designs like the 2019 line of medals.

I liked the marathon medal a lot more when I thought it was just a static medal. It's a little too similar to the DL Half medal this past year (2024) with Mickey & Minnie on springs like that. I'm only running the Marathon this year, but I do like the Goofy medal a lot and I'm wishing I had gotten in before it sold out. I like minimal moving parts on my medals, and my favorite Disney Marathon medals are the ones i got prior to 2018, when there was less color enamel and it was more like an actual medal. Just my opinion but that's the aesthetic I l like.

That Dopey medal to me looks like the same texture as the 2014 or 2015 marathon medals maybe? (The two on the left in the attached picture) Which to me looks nice in person. Like a brushed gold. I'm sure you will know for sure when people get to see them in person.

You made me go look at my 2014 medal (my first Marathon) - I'm not sure I ever realized it was painted! But yes, that's a nice color and if the Dopey is similar it will look nicer in person.

Edit: Looking at my other medals and there's a similar yellow gold paint on the 2009 Half and 2017 Goofy.

I agree and although I like the DL half medal a lot I don't think the spring adds anything interesting and on top of that there's the risk that the spring breaks or warps or something. Just feels like they've boxed themselves into a corner and feel like they have to add something fancy to all of these.

That said I still like the full medal and tbh I like all of them.

2014 was my first marathon too! Maybe that's the reason I like that medal.

I agree with you on all of this.

To be fair, other races are putting tricks into their medals too. Are they copying Disney or is it just a trend right now? I did a 10K last weekend and my medal has 4 spinning parts, so it looks like a gyroscope.

I'd be perfectly happy to not have any moving parts. I preserved my medals so the paint wouldn't chip and now none of the moving parts can move.

There's certainly something to be said for the emotional attachment to a medal, but that was a nice looking medal. I feel the same way about the 2022 marathon medal which was my first marathon. I don't know if it's because I really love the design of the medal or if it's because it was my first marathon.

It's a definitely a trend and a sales tactic. I can think of a few races offhand where I've been tempted in part because the medals were cool, Gasparilla is one of them. There's a good reason they make a fuss out of posting these medals, helps sell the races for the next year. And I could see there being a bit of backlash if RD decided to scale back a bit, I'm sure some people have the expectation that they keep this up.

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). This week let's talk about that insidious nemesis of runners everywhere. Chafing. If you run, you have to be aware and prepared to address it lest the post-run singing in the shower become screaming or indulgence in very un-Disney language. What are the chafing triggers that you look out for and what techniques do you use to address them?

SAFD: Chafing prevention is a routine part of running life for me and my preventative measures are based on where and how the chafing occurs. I finished more than one RunDisney race in my early running career looking like Andy Bernard after his rabies foundation 5k. Simple band-aids now prevent that from reoccurring. Another area I have an issue with is my lower back where the band of my compression shorts tends to rub. A well-placed piece of KT tape provides a perfect barrier for prevention. Finally, without getting into too much detail, there are certain nether regions that can get aggravated on occasion. For that, I find a quick application of Body Glide to be immensely helpful. Pro tip: keep a dedicated applicator for that area and label it "not for general use" to prevent mix-ups.
I have had your precise issue in the past, specific to certain shirts.

otherwise I have more issue with chafing while hiking or backpacking than running.

Not sure if it’s been said, or if anyone shares the sentiment, but I’m happy to see Chip and Dale on the 10k again and hope it means this lineup is permanent. As much as I think the 10k should still be Minnie’s race, I understand why they have moved her with Mickey as a host for the Marathon. It’s cool that the other weekends change IP each year to fit their theme, but this lineup feels right for MW.

SAFD: I have been fortunate that I do not seem to chafe as much as I've gotten older. I do have to make an effort to wear running shorts or Under Armour underwear to make sure I don't have any chafing downtown but other than that I seem to be pretty lucky. Although, of course randomly yesterday on my 8-miler I rubbed a blood blister under my arm raw enough to start bleeding and it's driving me nuts today. But that was because I wore the wrong shirt (which came off at mile 5 and my neighborhood got to see me jiggling around for three more miles. Ugh) and I am going to have it removed soon I believe.

I will echo what a couple of the men have said in regards to nipple guards. I use NipGuards, which I grabbed as an impulse buy at my local running store before Goofy in 2023 and they have been an absolute life-saver for me ever since. They never come off and my nipples are completely unaffected after any distance. Highly recommend!

SAFD: I use bodyglide on my inner thighs, around my armpits, in my face, and under my sports bra. Seems to be where I have the most problem. I’m such a sweaty person! Sometimes I’ll put some on my feet and toes if it’s going to be a hot long run. This year, I have ditched my tank and just run in my sports bra. I get really hot and really annoyed with the shirt on my belly and tying it up would cause chafing. Thankfully the marathons I’ve run have not been in hot weather so I haven’t really had a problem with chafing during a race. My 10 miler last year my shorts rode up and I ended up with a very sore spot on the back of leg.

Also, I love the medals. And I start my official dopey training in 2 weeks so I’m excited!

I agree with the feedback regarding the Dopey medal, it seems too yellow. And to be honest I don’t get to excited by medals that spin, slide, open up, etc. I am most drawn in by the characters on the medal and the look of the medal. All that to say outside of Dopey, I like the way they look. I am very excited to see Chip and Dale!

I think the medals are fine, but it is becoming abundantly clear that Disney is just reusing the same art assets for each year’s medals. Maybe mirroring the characters in some cases, but regardless I’d like a little more variation than that. If only Disney could find someone on staff good at drawing cartoon characters.
