Marathon Weekend 2025

SAFD

What about a "Friends" or "Side Kicks" themed race? This would open up so many rare characters. Also, paired with this, I would love to see a relay option for the marathon. I remember seeing people mention that this used to be an option at one point. To have a special "team" medal would be epic.

I want to say this was in 2011, and it was one year only for the Chip and Dale Marathon relay. There were special C&D medals for the runners.

Logistics may have been the big issue. At the time, the hand-off point was right around the gold course, before we turned onto Bear Island. Getting half of the runners to a staging area there, with road closures, etc., I think was an issue.

Seems like they could take the monorail (or maybe they did?), but we also had more miles behind us by that point, since we looped through Epcot right off the bat.

SAFD: I desperately want an Inside Out weekend with a Core Memory challenge. I don't have the mental capacity right now to assign the characters to the various races, but I would want a Bing Bong race of some sort (and hopefully not kids races even though that probably makes the most sense because I want the dang medal! 🤣 ). Other than that, I just take what runDisney gives me and continue to shell out money to run the race weekends regardless of what the weekend theme is.

You could just go with my costumes from my Inside Out themed Dopey 2023 -- adjusted for non-MW distances and adding an IO2 reference:

5K - Fear and/or Sadness and/or Anxiety (What have I signed up for?)
10K - Anger (What do you mean, I'm not even half way through the mileage?!)
Half - Disgust and/or Joy (Start out disgusted at waking up the third morning in a row, end up joyful for finishing.)
Challenge - Bing Bong!

They could do some fun Ennui merch for the non-runners (like the Sleepy stuff at MW expo). And I'd love to see something with Nostalgia too.

Ok, the more I think about this, the more I want a "Take her to the moon" half marathon with Bing Bong as the "host." Core Memory is mandatory for the challenge. Haha!

Oooh, I’ve already got a costume and props for that!

SAFD: I am also in the camp that would love to do a night run. I wouldn't be opposed to having a "15k in 10 hours" challenge. Do the 5k at 9pm on say, Thursday night. Then come back and do the 10k at 5am. Heck, do an "all nighter" challenge. Run the 5k at 9pm, keep Epcot open for the runners all night long, then the runners can just walk over to the starting line for the 10k after hanging out in Epcot overnight.
I would do this one!

Similar to @BigEeyore , my mind first went to having a permanent Villians themed race weekend. That way, you could rotate through different villians themes every year.

If we're talking about a one-off though, I'd love for Spring Surprise one year to be themed after Disney on Broadway.

I audibly squealed with delight when they were playing the Papermill cast recording of Hunchback at the last Hunchback photo stop I was at during a race. (Must've been a musical fan selecting the music for that race, because they also had Camelot's C'est Moi at the Sword and the Stone stop.)

Ideally, I'd give some love to Aida, Newsies and Hunchback with the themes, but realistically I'd go with the following:

5k - Beauty and the Beast on Broadway the one that started it all.

10k - Mary Poppins "Anythig Can Happen If You Let It"

10 mile - "The Lion King" the longest running one.

Challenge - Hercules "I Can Go the Distance" with a West End debut next year

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that wants a Broadway themed weekend. If they could wedge it into Festival of the Arts time and throw in an afterparty with a performance from some of the Broadway stars, that would be even better.
Love this….id also gladly sub the 10m or challenge to be seize the day
SAFD: I want a Muppets weekend! As long as Muppet Christmas Carol is included, I don't care about anything else
Love this idea also can’t wait to see what they do or don’t do for the Swedish Chef 5k in November hope I will still be able to take a medal photoshoot in pizzarizzos party room after

SAFD aside from the obvious SW elephant in the room Id also love a villain themed race that’s not virtual or with a recycled line up and limited character interactions
Also Duffy

I've never seen Inside Out and quick-scanned this as a Big Bong race and thinking definitely no kids races!
Until I read it more closely I wondered just what rabbit hole we were going down here...

>> “Marathon weekend. So instead of going 5K—>10K—>Half—>Full, let’s do it in reverse.“

At first, I wasn’t sure about doing anything after doing the full, but without doing any races prior to the Full, I think I would be able to do the half the next day. So the more I think about it the more I like it. I really like the psychological aspect of a shorter distance each day!
The Reverse Dopey? Inverse Dopey?
I will note that this would have people in the parks on Thursday morning instead of Sunday morning as they complete the marathon, but that might actually have a certain appeal to Disney. Someone should get this suggestion to them.

And from a local restaurant, that is nowhere close to Orlando, an inadvertent hidden Mickey.

Yeah, you gotta figure it would be better to screw around with traffic around WDW on a Thursday morning than a Sunday morning.

And how much fun could we have with this theme??

FWIW during Gasparilla I have been doing the 15k/8k the past few years so longer first

There four race challenge is run the 15k… finish in time to loop back before the 5K walker wave goes off on Saturday than on Sunday run the Half than finish in time to loop back before the 8k walker wave goes off

We recently dropped cable and got YouTube TV, and with the savings we also decided to get YouTube Premium, which includes YouTube music. A benefit of this I didn’t realize initially, is that all the Disney background music videos I saved to a playlist on YouTube automatically transferred to Music - which means I can listen to the Happily Ever After soundtrack during the horrible parts of the marathon without needing a good data connection. 💖

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). This week let's talk about that insidious nemesis of runners everywhere. Chafing. If you run, you have to be aware and prepared to address it lest the post-run singing in the shower become screaming or indulgence in very un-Disney language. What are the chafing triggers that you look out for and what techniques do you use to address them?

SAFD: Chafing prevention is a routine part of running life for me and my preventative measures are based on where and how the chafing occurs. I finished more than one RunDisney race in my early running career looking like Andy Bernard after his rabies foundation 5k. Simple band-aids now prevent that from reoccurring. Another area I have an issue with is my lower back where the band of my compression shorts tends to rub. A well-placed piece of KT tape provides a perfect barrier for prevention. Finally, without getting into too much detail, there are certain nether regions that can get aggravated on occasion. For that, I find a quick application of Body Glide to be immensely helpful. Pro tip: keep a dedicated applicator for that area and label it "not for general use" to prevent mix-ups.

SAFD: I mostly use Body Glide and I’ve learned over the years to apply until I think I’ve applied enough - and then apply more. I’ve generally found I only need to reapply in the later stages of a full marathon. I’ve tended to rely on Vaseline at the first aid stations but I’m thinking of carrying a small body glide bar with me this year as the Vaseline can get messy.

SAFD:
I don't have much of an issue with chafing in general (my first experience with it was when I ran my first marathon and put a few extra things in my hydration vest which then made my sports bra chafe my mid-back, and there were definitely screams when water hit them.

ANYWAY, I sometimes use bodyglide (stick) but have switched over to 2Toms sportshield which is a roller and very silicone-y. I have found that tulle doesn't stick to it like it does to the bodyglide, and since I seem to default back to tutus for races, that's a big consideration. If I feel like the 2Toms is wearing off, I'll definitely stop for a vaseline stick at a med-tent.

But the biggest thing I have done is to wear undershorts that prevent thigh rub. My go-to are IAB "no ride pocket" or something like that. They have a 5in inseam, drop in pockets on both legs, and a solid silicone band around the leg seam. They. Don't. Move. Every single other brand of bike short that I've tried rides up my legs. Even the undershorts on some of my newer lulu skorts that have a dot-pattern gripper on the leg openings ride up (which is SUPER annoying, given the price of those!)

And test-running costume stuff, especially accessories.

SAFD: my go-to is Body Glide, not just on the spots I know have chafed in the past, but on the spots around the spots. I also switched to a different style of underwear for running, my previous briefs either caused the chafing where my legs meets my crotch, or allowed the very tops of my things to rub against each other and chafe. So now I have shorts-style underwear that keeps my legs from touching and doesn’t have seams where I don’t want them.

Thank you for dropping the short brand! I always wear old navy legging crops even in the heat just to stave off chafe. I've been ok so far, but man I wanna try shorts that don't roll or the seam doesn't feel weird against my other leg

SAFD: Been largely lucky that I don't have too many chaffing issues. However, I always use two small strips of Transpore tape (think it is sometimes called surgical tape) on the nipples, after finding out the hard way wearing a white singlet early in my running days.

The only other big issue I had was mostly my feet when I got into running, and after much experimentation, it was using the thinest Injinji toe sock with the thinest Darn Tough sock over top, and Gurney Goo in a couple hot spots that has thankfully been working for years now. On the rare occasion some other spot does pop up, I use Gurney Goo there as well. I don't remember who or where I got the Gurney Goo suggestion from any longer (might have even been here), but was one of the best tips I ever received.
