Marathon Weekend 2023

OMFG!!! Not to get too personal, but I was waiting for the results of a biopsy from a polyp taken from a colonoscopy and I completely thought that the general registration was tomorrow. I was fretting about getting my results prior to 10:00 when registration opens up. Cancer = No Goofy Challenge.
Hoping for good news for you today.

ALSO I love the Castaway Cay design so much. And I really love the pictures I’ve seen of the new Wish… I’ve never been on a cruise and it’s on my 40 before 40 list (I’m 31). But I also have the Poly booked for after MW which I am looking forward to.
I had told my husband I wanted to do the Castaway Cay challenge, but not in 2023. Then I saw the design and got major FOMO. I told my friend I need to get off the internet, because I already don't have enough vacation days for MW, I don't need to add a cruise afterwards.

Did anyone else notice the artwork is slightly different on the runDisney blog vs the virtual pages? The marathon and challenges look the exact same but the others have variations, with the 5k looking the most different to me. Does this mean there will be different shirts? Am I reading into this too much? 😝

I'm not sure any of them will be the exact shirts, more just the general theme. I think we need to ask the bus drivers which one is right. They have all the accurate info ;)

I noticed for Spring Surprise, the initial artwork on social media was different than the designs on the virtual page and the virtual page ended up being the race shirt for the in-person (and I assume virtual). I distinctly remember for Race for the Taste because I loved the initial artwork which ended up on some of the race merch at the expo. And I wasn't as crazy about the race shirt (just not as vibrant and fun as the original design).

I wish for a sign on what to register for. My heart (and I think my intuition?) tells me the 5K + Goofy (and maybe cheer for the 10K) but I worry I will have FOMO or feel like I’m succumbing to social media pressure about it not being enough (which I know is dumb. A full is “enough” on its own. Especially for my first one.).

Dopey Pros:
  • No FOMO
  • I have always wanted to try the 10K course
  • The 10K color is my favorite color
  • The consistent early mornings may help me get normal sleep before the half and full (as someone mentioned earlier)

Dopey Cons:
  • I hate Dopey as a character
  • I am worried it will sell out because of the hype and then I’ll miss out on a diff registration
  • Four days in a row feels like a lot to me in regard to early mornings especially
The registration is my birthday/anniversary present from my DH so the cost difference isn’t a factor. And I’ll be in the hotel the same amount of days regardless.

I’m being stupid obsessing about this right? I need to get off Instagram… kick some sense into me, grounded Disboard friends.

I recognize that I am definitely overthinking this and also that these are very much minor problems to have in life.

I also hate the Dopey character, but I must say that it didn't in any way diminish the accomplishment when I finished my first Dopey Challenge this past January. If anything, it helped me with restraint in the merch area, as otherwise I probably would have just bought one of everything that had the challenge on it.

Even with the hype, remember we are living in a rD bubble. I do think Dopey may sell out faster than usual, but my gut says it may still take a few days. The "outsiders" who are excited by the theme aren't likely to choose the $600+ challenge that requires almost a week of vacation just after the holidays. I think those folks (who don't go virtual) will go for the shorter or individual distances.

That said, in 2020 I did the 10K and Full and never once felt FOMO for Dopey. It was my first full and there was no way I was mentally ready for Dopey, but I was also able to be part of the whole MW experience without the pressure of a race every day. That break took some of the pressure off, and I was still able to keep the schedule by cheering on the half runners. I could also participate in some of the meetups and feel connected to this group.

I guess the bottom line is if you REALLY are feeling like you want to skip the 10K, why not? But I'd try to get the 5K registration quick, because I think that will go FAST. Your backup plan if something sells out can be to go for Dopey.

Thanks for sharing how it ended up working for SS. I know it's all speculation at this point, but I seem to have nothing better to do with my time 🤣
I want to say thank you for all the well wishes. Looks like I'll be training for the Goofy Challenge after all!
Fantastic news! 🥳

I'm probably not going to be be much help, but I love the 10K distance. It's long enough to get in the groove, but not too long to be really taxing. I really enjoyed this past year's course with all of the park time coming in the second half of the course.

IMHO The four mornings in a row is over-hyped at times. I found that it was very easy to get into a routine and getting up at o'dark thirty almost become "normal." But I listened to my body and didn't try squeezing one more ride into my park time. In fact, on Monday, getting to the park for early entry at 8 a.m. seemed a lot like sleeping in.

As far as Dopey, can you re-arrange it in your head? Re-theme the race for yourself? There are so many ways that you could go with this (custom sticker to cover up Dopey on the bids, custom magnets and "I Did It" t-shirts - which would also be A LOT cheaper) if you wanted to. I wouldn't let that be a stumbling block if you really wanted to do it.

And yes, my name is Amy and I am a runDisney enabler.

I did notice that! I personally like the 5k from the virtual page and the 10k from the blog (it seems more in the spirit of chip and dale). The others weren't different enough.

I had wondered about the park icons on the original 10K and half marathon art. Normally they have the icons corresponding to the parks you run through, so having all 4 on the 10K art and just the castle for the half (still there) was interesting to me. Or maybe it means nothing!

I liked the sunglasses on the 5K art so I have less FOMO for that race now since they changed it for whatever reason! 😜

Very random - I stopped in Old Navy at lunch to get a white tank for my company's tie-dye event. They had my favorite running leggings in brown, which sounds super weird and I normally wouldn't buy, except they're the perfect shade of brown for an Indiana Jones runDisney costume 😄
I saw absolutely beautiful brown leggings at Target, and couldn’t figure out what I’d use them for, so I didn’t get them. But then I was there with my grandma and she was like “those would go great with your Bruno poncho!”And she was right, of course.
