Marathon Weekend 2016

January 2016 has the same day/date sequencing as the infamous FREEZING Marathon Weekend of 2010. Looks like we might be having much nicer weather this year, 53F/72F, so ENJOY ALL. My M&M McFlurry will be a cool treat at mile 15.

McFlurry John
That's funny...that was our first marathon and we are finally going back. This time hubby is doing the dopey and I'm doing everything but the full, which I have deemed the Minnie. (Also I broke my foot during that full in 2010 and haven't done another since).

How fitting :)

I'm sorry, I have not stayed off property during a race weekend before so I cannot give you specifics. My sister's friend stayed at Orange Lake for Princess Half. They left their resort at 3:30-3:45 am and sat in the car for a good 30- 45 mins because they were there early. Said there was no traffic and the drive was easy. Hope that helps a little.

I hope your household stays healthy this week and I'm sorry about all you are going through. I hope the race excitement starts to pick up for you and wipes your worries away, even if its just for the weekend!

Thank you. I know I will be fine. I was watching some videos of past marathons and it was starting to get me more excited.

I want that Disgust shirt!

ME TOO. I have been having tight hamstrings lately anyway, so it's perfect. If I can get one I may even run in it!

So ... my new problem is how I'm going to get through the next 24 hours.
My flight leaves in about 28 hours, so obviously I'm already on crazy all-Disney all the time mode.
But ... I have two job interviews within the next 24 hours. I don't know how I'm going to focus on that. It's going to be an interesting 24 hours.
(The good news is, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to schedule one of them before the trip, so at least now I'm feeling a little better about that).

Good luck with the interviews. Absolutely talk about the race and running if you get the chance and can fit it in naturally. I talked about running a marathon in an interview last spring. The owner of the company was so impressed. She made me an offer (I turned it down). She said anyone who runs marathons shows the kind of discipline she wanted.

I noticed that, also, and think it HAS to be a mistake. Right???

I would think this is a mistake. Given that this is FL and there can always be high humidity any time of the year I would think they would never go 5 miles without a water stop.

As other's have mentioned it's not just the distance, it's that the route is completely packed and everyone is moving really slowly.

Did you try a taper high heel run?

I've done both, but after reading a couple different studies I've stopped doing ice baths after my typical long or hard runs. That being said I'll probably do one after Disney because I'm doing goofy.

This article provides a nice description of the different thoughts http://www.outsideonline.com/1971446/recovery-ice-bath-isnt-always-such-good-idea

“What is your workout goal? If you’re trying to develop muscle strength, then the answer is ‘no.’ But if it makes you feel good and you’re going to perform better the next day because of it, well, the answer is ‘yes,’” Pascoe says.

Basically for me it's Ice Bath after the half because I just want to feel good during the full. After the Full I am going to try and recover and get back into serious Marathon training so I'll be doing an epson Salt Bath.

Interesting article. Thanks!

QOTD-
I will just add nuun into my hydration routine in the days before the marathon. No need for a clothes change, and race day hydration will stay the same as I am used to the weather since I live in FL. The only thing that might change will be shoes *if* there is a greater than 60% chance of rain.

thanks for the info I think I will just stick with the Epsom salt bath and avoid the Ice for now, I think ill be happier this way LOL

For those who have run in previous years, can you explain to me the route Disney wants you to take from the parking lot area to the starting line/corrals? I am just a little curious why it will take 20 minutes.

If you wait until 5 to leave the bag check area, it won't take you 20 minutes, and the porta potties won't have a line either.

So ... what's the rule on NSAIDs? How far before the race should I not take them?

I wore the wrong shoes today and my knees are killing me. I have to find different shoes to wear tomorrow, but before that ... I gotta do something about this knee pain!

Never take them before a race, especially when it's going to be warm like it's expected to be on Sunday. NSAIDs can stress your kidneys, making it harder for them to function properly. You'll need them in top form to help keep you from getting dehydrated in the heat. If you have to take them, you'll want to do so 18-24 hours beforehand. Tylenol would be a better option the closer it gets to the race.

question for some of you more experienced marathoners....Better post run recovery Ice Bath or Warm Epsom salt soak? and on another note IM OFFCIALLY ON VACATION and we head to Disney Wednesday!!!!!

Medical studies will tell you that neither one has the benefits that people claim they do. That said, I personally find that an ice bath helps reduce the soreness in my legs and speeds my recovery over the next 24 hours. I wear a sweatshirt, grab a beer, and hop in one after all of my long runs or bike rides if possible.

QOTD: Based on the current forecast posted earlier today. Will the weather require you to make any adjustments to your current running plans and goals?

Answer: Not too worried, starting to hydrate properly and looking forward to do doing stretches outside in Orlando temperatures as opposed to 28.4, which is Vancouver temperature right now. So, no huge changes.

I did get some pain under my right knee after running on Saturday, taking a break seems to have resolved it. Really hoping it won't be an issue but may slow down my marathon pace as a result.

10K is on FRIDAY!!!!!

Generally it is advised no NSAID within 24 hours before event.

Oops! Sorry!! I have to get up super early to fly Thursday too, but I don't think any of you would know the answer to when I'd have to get up then haha.

I find that most of the advice @FFigawi gives is "blah blah blah...grab a beer...blah blah blah". That said John, I think you give great advice! :thumbsup2

Love it! Besides, there's really no other way to make an ice bath bearable. I run so I can drink beer and eat pizza, and I'm not too proud to admit it. Well, ok, there's the health and travel and friendship stuff too, but mostly for the beer and pizza.

QOTD:

What is your preferred time of day to run and why?

ATTQOTD:

I really enjoy morning runs, although I rarely get the chance to. Something about watching the run rise and how much better I feel for the remainder of the day after a early morning run.

I would be on board if the rain happened a little bit on Sunday evening or Saturday evening to cool things down a bit. Unfortunately it never seems to do what I want!

ATTQOTD:
I'm probably alone in this but the times I prefer are different for training and racing! I do better if I race right away in the morning - probably because I don't have time to ruin my hydration or eat a bunch of junk! Training runs are easier on me if I do them in the evening!

QOTD:

What is your preferred time of day to run and why?

Prefer mornings, especially in the summer to avoid as much heat as possible. Sometimes it is a little tougher to get going in the morning during the winter, but I feel so good getting it done earlier in the day.

That's me to a tee...beer & pizza are easily my top reasons for running. Too bad there really aren't any great pizza places at WDW...now running the Chicago Marathon, that was a different story! Amazing pizza options...

QOTD:
What is your preferred time of day to run and why?

I run right before lunch every day, 11:30 or so. I'm lucky enough that I work right downtown and I am steps from beautiful running paths and trails that follow the river for miles in three different directions, and we have a gym at the office with shower facilities. Also getting to eat right after I finish my run is a good way to ensure I'm refueling properly.

Early morning. Most of my weekday runs start around 4 to 4:30am, and the weekend long runs 5 or 5:30. Love getting the workout done early, and having the evening time to spend with the kids, if they want me around....

QOTD:

I used to run exclusively in the mornings, while the rest of the family sleeps, but over the past month or so I've shifted to running at night, after dinner. It's not ideal, especially after big meals, but I'm just glad to get a run in any way I can.
