Marathon Weekend 2016

OK, people. I need you to talk me out of Goofy. Like, seriously - be honest. I was just planning to do the full, but now the siren's call of Goofy won't leave me alone!

You're probably in the wrong place to be talked OUT of an extra race haha! If you're thinking about it you've practical signed up already :P

Ugh. I know. I was planning to just do the marathon since I've never done a full and I'm doing the two challenges after that ... but the bling! And the challenge! And sure, why can't I do this! is just starting to seep into my thoughts.

I know for me and doing my first full I only wanna focus on that for the first one, im sure ill step up to Goofy/Dopey and some point for now I want to conquer this distance first and not have to worry about anything else (though im doing the 5k but my training calls for a 2 or 3 mile run around that time anyway to stay loose for the race)

See? That's what I'm talking about! Thanks, @Neoflynn.

Is there anyway you could fit a full marathon into your training plan between now and then so that it wouldn't be your first? I guess it depends on what level you feel you are at now. I'm training now for the Dublin marathon in October.

The bling.. it's all about the bling!

It's really hard because of the weather here in Texas from, oh, today on out. I'm doing a baby/beginners triathlon in July, and then halfs in August, September and November. I guess I can look for one in October, but I'll be well into full training at that point based on the plan I'm using that combines DLH, W&D and the WDW Full.

I'd hate to pay for Goofy and have to defer like I did for Tink - which I was NO WAY ready for, BTW.

I have three weeks to definitively make up my mind, but I know it's probably best if I just go for the full alone. It's right after the holidays (and NYE), and I like to eat poorly and imbibe too much during those, so to have to really cut it back for the challenge would make me sad for sure.

Ugh! I'm going to go back-and-forth on this until ... heck, I don't know. Hopefully they will both stay open for a while for me to get further into training to make a decision!!

Wow that's a packed schedule, I think you're right then to be thinking the sensible decision is to go for the full on it's own, I'm only just seeing your list of up and coming events! You don't want to push yourself and then sacrifice one of your other rundisney events because you've taken on too much. I'm so jealous you are doing so many events! We've to fly over from Ireland so it's really a one time a year thing if we're lucky although when we come over we tend to stay for a WHILE! Our trip in January is going to be 17nights!

Are you posting about your training anywhere? I'd be interested to follow along if you are :D

I've got TWO major charity events I'm heading up right now, that both end the first two weeks in May. After that, I promise my Training Journal here will be updated regularly! I've got all my notes, I just need to force myself to take time to write everything out.

17 nights will be awesome!! My parents still live in Orlando, so we drive out there and spend a minimum of 3 weeks at a time out there - so I'm with ya on the long visits! 18 hours in a car with one husband and three dogs will make you want to stay where you're at for a while!

I would say that it depends on how well you plan to prepare, because you have plenty of time to train for both and you are not new to running. If you can prepare for a sub 6 hour marathon then adding the half is just about adding extra miles on back to back training days. Being tired after the half won't cost you a finish for the marathon.

As always, the training is tougher than the actual races.

So, I just used the McMillan Calculator for my marathon time based on my first half marathon (that I was under trained for) and it puts me at 5:47. So, just BARELY sub 6 hours.

In the near month since that race, I've not run a distance longer than 3 miles - I've been focusing more on overall conditioning and strength training before the DLH Training Plan starts, BUT ... I have noticed a slow, but steady improvement in my times for 3 miles. So, as far as training is going ... I feel like I'm finally putting myself on the right track - and that's the ONLY reason I'm entertaining Goofy at this point.

Looking at the Galloway plan for Goofy wasn't super helpful - what would you suggest be the breakdown for back-to-back mileage days? Like, if my full plan has me running 13 miles on Saturday, should I shoot for 7.5 on Friday?

I know I've said it before, but the other reason I'm thinking about this is that I have the time and nothing stopping me from training. I mean, other than making meals and doing the dishes and other housewifey stuff.

(If you're playing along at home, I'm back to 60% Goofy, 40% Marathon Only).

I just checked my training logs from my 2014 Goofy and I maxed out with an 8 miler on Saturday and a 24 miler on Sunday, but I was running 6 days/week the last 3 months so the Saturday mileage didn't have to climb too high. You could easily do the same running 4 or 5 days/week. My plan for the Dopey in 2016 has me maxed at 10 miles on Saturday and 24 on Sunday, but I might pull back when the time comes - depends on how I feel.

I build out my training schedule for the entire year in January. I build in breaks for rest, time for strength training & time for speed training - but I always maintain my 25 mile/week base. The key to getting faster is tempo runs and intervals. The key to endurance is mileage. All of this while eating properly and getting plenty of sleep.

Remember - you can do anything that you put your mind to. Just build a plan and believe in yourself.

I did Goofy this year and was extremely happy I did it,for about 25 seconds yesterday the thought of doing it again in 2016 popped in my mind but I promptly brought myself down to earth.I pretty much know I'll be doing the full every year for the next 30-40 years if I can but Goofy and Dopey will be only on special occasions like the 10th anniversary of Goofy, like I totally have Dopey penciled in for 2018 but year in year out I rather use the money for other races and my body is also probably not meant to do multiple races back to back,I was limping around most of Monday after Goofy.I've also been going back and forth trying to decide on what races to do next racing season, right now I'm 99% certain to sign up for the Space Coast full and about 50/50 on possibly doing the Chicago Marathon if I get selected, given that all my fulls have been in Disney doing 3 fulls in 3 months along with probably 6 half marathons between October and March I'll be fine not doing Goofy or Dopey.I'm also not the biggest fan of the Disney half course,of course you're still in Disney and you run through MK but its basically a back and forth from Epcot on World dr.That's why I love the full, cause you run through pretty much everything.I talked myself out of doing the Gasparilla Michelob Ultra challenge in Tampa for a similar reason, its 4 races in 2 days but I was looking at the courses for all 4 and they're pretty much the same, run down Bayshore Dr with a few different areas for the two longer races,I'll do it some other year.I will tell you that if they showed the medals and race shirts before registration opens that would give me a bigger incentive to go from full to Goofy or Dopey.
