Marathon Weekend 2016

Got back from a great trip, well for the most part. Will try to do a trip report of the races after I go through my pictures, but here's a quick rundown of how it went for me:

I went in with a glute injury from November that was healing, so took it easy at each race leading up to the full. Luckily, it kind of disappeared by the end, hooray for that! Set all PRs for slowest times ever, but whatever!
Expo - Went Wednesday night about 6:30, no lines, but merch. was picked over for hot items, but got a few things.
5k - fun time, stopped for Marie & Stitch & other random photos, 45 minutes
10k - Hello Darkwing Duck, long wait like 8 minutes but worth it. Stopped for Rats & Monsters too, didn't mind the rain at all, took it easy again, 1:26
Half - Easy pace again, took lots of random pictures/video, stopped for the Mime from Rapunzel & Mary Poppins. The fog was crazy how it ate the Spaceship Earth Ball, 2:34. Felt great besides the bank roads messing with my left upper leg, so massaged that out & was hoping for a great full around 5 hours to beat last years 5:12 which I ran with the flu......

......BUT here is where it turned to NIGHTMARE

Full -
We ate lunch at Pecos Bills after the half, I started to feel sick, bloated, like on the bus back to Sports my stomach felt like a balloon blowing up in it. We were to meet our brother and his family and then go to dinner, well I almost left, but then headed back to my room took an alcalseltzer & then just kept throwing up all night & diarrhea. I just kept watching the clock get closer to race time & was scared I wouldn't make it to the start. Well somehow got on a bus at about 4:00am, got to the start with a bottle of coke in hand as it is all that would stay down. So I was completely empty besides some coke & few saltine crackers. I started from corral F near the back so I wasn't in the way as I didn't know how I would start. My stomach kept cramping/heaving, so I walked a lot cause running just made me worse & I wanted to finish. Tried to get a little water or powerade in at stations but most would gag back out & cramp up the stomach. I cried a lot, my mom called even to encourage me, my back started to kill from all the speed walking, my shins hurt, I would shuffle run to keep my pace under 16 & somehow I finished in 6:50. Medical guy made me go to the tent (guess he thought I looked bad, oops) after I crossed the finish where they got me to drink a bottle of water & took vitals and finally I could leave. Got back to the room with still south end issues and couldn't even go to a park or really eat anything still....but I had my Dopey & Goofy medals!!

I realized later I actually didn't sweat at all during it as I was so dehydrated, the humidity didn't help how I felt so welcomed any breeze. I'm pretty sure it was food poisoning from the guacamole at Pecos Bills condimenet bar, why oh why did I eat that after the half. It's the only thing my brother didn't eat and he was fine.
I've never had this before but all symptoms point to it & I wasn't sick otherwise.

So....I experienced the full from the back, saw every corral after mine pass me on the way to MK, it was humbling to say the least, but I would take the flu last year over food poisoning this year any day as my stomach was at least okay last year. Those that say 16mm pace is a leisurely walk are full of it, I had to work my butt off with some shuffle running thrown in to get that under 7 time. And I even got a couple character pics, Scrooge McDuck thank you, near the end. Oh & that injury became such non entity it's crazy how things turn out!

Oh & I made the Orlando Sentinel pics from the marathon, I'm the one in Purple like Mr. Eggplant from Kitchen Kabaret clutching a bottle of coke & looking awful!

Good Job everyone else & Don't eat the guacamole at Pecos Bills!!!!!

I have said before that I my biggest fear. You rock. I would like to think in the same situation I would have tried to run too, to get the medals, but I don't know. Impressive!

@cavepig: I applaud you for your determination. I would have likely not even tried to make the bus, much less started the race.

Great job! I hope all is better know. I can't imagine how that experience must have been but congratulations.

Your determination is admirable and inspiring. I don't really know if I could run with stomach issues for that long. Congratulations.

You weren't the only one throwing up on Saturday @cavepig, I had my head in the toilet too...I figured it was the Jerk Chicken Salad from Flame Tree BBQ. Chicken can be a dicey call when eating out :worried:
Awesome job and incredible determination to push through and MORE THAN earn those medals...you are a champ!

Amazing determination @cavepig. I can't imagine being in that kind of shape knowing you still have to try and power through all those miles. I love the human spirit and how determined we can be..you are awesome.

A few random thoughts as I just got back to the real world last night:

Overall, as expected, it was a tremendous experience! Run Disney does such a great job of putting together a quality event.

The weather was tough. High humidity and high dew point are the exact conditions I struggle the most with. It’s not surprising it was the slowest winning time in the history of the event. For those who had good runs, major props to you because you really had to manager your effort.

Not much to say on the course changes. It seems they could have found more creative ways to extend the course other than the out and back before AK and that slight jaunt toward BTMR in MK.

My 2 youngest boys did the Mickey Mile on Saturday and I was disappointed by the process for getting your child. I’m surprised they don’t have a better organized way of retrieving your child. But, overall my boys loved the experience of the race and the expo.

On a final note as this thread starts to wind down I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for sharing your lives over the past year. It’s been great getting to know you and share my 2 favorite things…Running and Disney. I’m not sure when my next event will be (likely/hopefully Marathon 2018) so I’m hopping right over to the other thread so see you real soon!

Glad you made it through too, it's scary being like that knowing you are running a marathon in like 4 hours. Luckily I don't eat chicken or any meat, but I read about some elitest getting sick on a turkey sandwich one year at WDW. Crazy.

It's funny because I didn't ever even think of something like this happening, maybe like slight indigestion but not this. What's funny is I did go to Pecos to complain and saw a guy loading up on guacamole and about threw up & told my story to others in conversation about the races so hopefully they'll watch what they put out but as for me I'm not eating there again.

Thanks all! And congrats to everyone too on the their race(s) this weekend, it was really amazing!

Been home for a couple of days...am now caught up here. (I somehow didn't manage to log on the entire time I was at WDW.)

I had a great marathon and am calling it a mental PR. My time was actually like thirty minutes slower than two years ago, but this time I stopped for many of the character stops and rode Everest. I felt strong, but thirsty, for most of the race. I drank two cups of nasty yellow Powerade (where was the blue??) and poured a cup of water over my head at pretty much every drink stop. (A big thanks to @FFigawi for the salt tab advice. I think it saved me since I was sweating before the race even started!) I am not saying that the race was easy by any stretch of the imagination, but it was an overall a better experience for me than 2014 was.

I am going to miss this board like the rest of you. Will check out a few of the other boards mentioned above. Still serious contemplating the Disneyland Half in September. :)

Wow, where do I begin? I'm all packed up and ready to head home in the morning after 9 days, it has been such a great week.

Half - paced well, drank lots on course and ended up feeling great afterwards, legs weren't very sore at all.

Full - was so excited I only slept 2 hrs after the half, paced well, hit every single aid station on the course for Powerade & water. Ended up crushing my under 4-hr goal and have been beaming most of the week with a Goofy medal around my neck.

I'm so thankful to have been part of a RunDisney marathon weekend and while I don't intend on returning for some time, I hope to one day complete the Dopey.

Thank you so much to everyone on this thread who has been so supportive and encouraging. I could not have had such a great race weekend and days following had it not been for advice I took from the boards!

Wishing everyone a #RunHappy and safe 2016!

Quick question: is two years enough to train for the dopey if the most I've ever done is a half?
