Marathon Weekend 2016

I saw you in the 5k with the stormtrooper outfit & thought how cool! Awesome outfits at all the races & wow for running in the Leia outfit for the full, that humidity was rough, did you cook?!

Stormtrooper wasn't too bad, time sucked as I stopped for Stitch at the end and he left due to an eye issue and never returned, so that was 15-20 min wasted in line.
Vader for the 10K was hard, real hard. The rain just added like 15 lbs to the costume due to the cape just absorbing it all. That and having to walk the boardwalk due to it being very slippery.
I was dying from the heavy humidity in the Fett costume. Why I ever thought what a great idea it would be to run 13.1 in a full sleeve head to toe PADDED costume....
Minnie Mouse as Slave Leia was so much better. First half went by in a flash, shaved almost 30% off my Saturday time but the last 6-8 miles was pure hell. It was my first marathon and I did it as part of the Dopey Challenge, so that was to be expected. I was very surprised I did it with the wig on the entire course, I thought for sure I'd ditch it before mile 20 :p

edit: *sees new mod status on @rteetz * lookin' good....

I don't post too often, but thought I would add my flickr album from Marathon Weekend for anyone interested. Because of some on-going owies, I could only spectate at the marathon but did take some pictures and videos. If you were running through Epcot at around the 1:30 pm time frame on marathon day it's possible you were in one of the two marathon videos. https://www.flickr.com/photos/12843394@N00/albums/72157660957824604/with/24011413260/ You might note some pictures of Marathon Santa as well. Marathon or not, injury or not, I still had a great time and plan to return!

I read on facebook that the guy dressed as the giant mickey bar (that was stuck on his back and towered above) somehow when Stitch hugged him Stitch got 'hurt' or something so that sucks he had to leave for others. Yes props to keeping that wig on!

Well I am a new mod but I'm supposed to be specific to the news and rumors board.

Well folks, I am way behind on reading everything. We spend last week at the parks after the marathon and had a great time. Our two year old had a blast, as did we! Unfortunately, when we got home DW got sick early Friday morning, followed by DD later that day. Before I found out about it being a stomach bug at the house I registered for a local half marathon on Sunday. Somehow I made without getting sick and had a decent race. Sunday night, it was my turn to get sick and missed work yesterday. Feeling a bit tired today, but the worse is over. Will try to catch up on everything when things calm down a bit here at work.

......BUT here is where it turned to NIGHTMARE
I don't know how in heck you even started, let alone FINISHED!!! Amazing, truly! Against my better instincts, I joined friends for an 'Ohana meal Friday night - and would've been a total wreck had I been running the half the next day. I have a cast-iron stomach and it takes a LOT to mess me up, but those greasy noodles did me in, lol! I stayed in and made all my own food before the full. :)

I did have a final topic of discussion. I always meant to throw this out there in recent weeks but then it got busier as we got closer to the race.

So many people have said they intend to do Dopey in 2018. It already sells out in minutes as it is. I guess I am wondering if they are going to increase the fields for these races that year for the anniversaries to be able to handle the amounts of people who want to do them? I remember hearing a podcast with the race director for the 20th Anniversary and they increased the fields for that race so I would have to think they will for the 25th, right?
I sure hope not; the races are overcrowded as it is! I think they've really hit the ceiling on how many runners they can stuff onto a course... but the bean counters may have other thoughts.

-During the half marathon, there was a runner in mile one repeating "on your left" the whole time. Some runners had nowhere to go, and instead of simply passing a few people on the grass, she just kept saying it louder and louder. Led to some shouting as congestion prevented runners from letting her pass on the left. She then yelled at someone to get out of her corral. We got a kick out of it, especially since she was only running about a 10 minute mile and placed in the exact right corral. Not really embodying the spirit of a Disney race.

I'm not sure why people would think yelling on your left would get people out of your way. I usually use it just so people don't cross over into my line. I actually gave up even using it for that shortly into the marathon because I was usually passing people both on the left and right at the same time.

I definitely noticed more people giving out things to the runners, thank you to those I got the smarties and the Swedish fish from.On another note thank you Disney for not cheaping out and giving us good chocolate entering DHS,I don't know if it was last year or two years ago I was expecting chocolate and got fruit snacks instead,I like fruit snacks but I was expecting the chocolate, not happy!!!The pieces of Dove this year were great,I must have taken like 6!!!
It definitely seemed like there were more people out during the marathon than prior years.

Oh I almost forgot but waiting in corral F for the marathon a gal who's bib clearly said O starts to hope over the guard rail thing, & I was feeling awful and grouchy so yelled "your not supposed to be in this corral", she says "I know", then precedes to jump over smashing into me and smashing my foot, then slithers to the middle. Her friend who looked embarrassed since everyone was staring since I was loud (hey I was sick) by it all apologized, but the other girl could have cared less if she hurt anyone. I had to hold it together as I about lost it when she smashed me. First time I had witnessed a corral hopper, she just acted so entitled.
We say 2 girls climb into D with O bibs.

We also had a guard come through D asking to see people's bibs to make sure they hadn't snuck into the wrong corral.

I think the way they would do that would be to extend the number of corrals. In theory it shouldn't drastically increase course congestion but it would mean the race would run longer. Even if they don't do that I could see them allocating a higher percentage of bibs to dopey.

Totally agree! I feel like the full was way more congested than when I ran two years ago. I can't imagine there being even more runners.

Big giant NO to increasing the fields at the races. They just DECREASED the number of WDW half marathon registrations a couple of years ago and it's still crowded.

Obviously they want to make money, but at a certain point it gets unsafe if there are too many people on the course(s).

Getting some time to be on my laptop instead of just being on my cell.

but I was viewing the marathon right before mile 5 and a few people were running across the street to give things or get things from their spectator friends/family since we had to be on the side of the road opposite of the running lane.

I was looking for you and maybe a sign when I got there. I think I went by there about 7:15

So good to meet @FFigawi and his lovely wife as well as @SunDial in China briefly today... hope you made it all the way around, I was feeling giddy after one margarita!!

It was nice to meet you too @dancingtodisney. Met up with @FFigawi at Canada and had a very nice lunch in France. It was a very nice afternoon. Glad to meet up with him and his wife. Wealth of knowledge.

I'm kind of really sad the weekend is over because that means this thread is going to end. I really loved all of the advice, planning, cheering, and just amazingness that has happened in this thread.

I'm sad to see this thread wind down, too. I enjoyed the discussions here over the past couple of months. Hopefully some of you will be hoping over into the 2017 thread. Just a little over 3 months until sign up for next year opens up.

This has been a very informative, supportive and friendly group. I do not look at it as winding down and saying goodbye. More as just a changing the title of the thread.

Back to reality... and yes, it bites. ;)

But... DONE! I am now a marathoner. :dancer:

Now that I've done my first ever marathon (and Dopey at that!) I think the next challenge I want to take on is to do every runDisney event in the same calendar year. So, who wants to donate? :rolleyes1

Congrats on your 1st marathons. My first was a year ago as part of Goofy a year ago.

When I finally retire the idea of doing all of the RD events in the same calendar year is a good possibility and would be a lot of fun. I think there should be a very special challenge medal.

This race was hard for me. I didn't anticipate the inclines being so difficult for me, especially at the end leading into Epcot. Seriously? Mile 12 Disney? Was that a freeway on-ramp or something?

When I did my first half I had the same thoughts. What the heck!!! You just could have put a few steps in to get up to the overpass.

Congrats everyone! I am proud to say I am a marathoner!

Overall it was a great experience but I kind of fell apart after mile 20. I agree with everyone about that awful ESPN area

Congrats!! I didn't like ESPN last year and still didn't like it this year.

This is so tempting. No one tell @Keels

I had a good laugh with this post :lmao:

That's a Disney bumper sticker right there.

I'm trying to decide what the next challenge is; maybe a 24 hour race, maybe focus on the shorter distances...

Triathlon! :boat: :moped: :tiptoe:

I have to agree with @CheapRunnerMike. Outside of preparing for Dopey 2018, my future plan now is to do the Miami Half Triathlon in mid November. I have heard one has to finish a half before one can sign up for a full Triathlon.

I've done a mini-tri and they are rewarding, but I don't think I'm willing to spend enough time in the pool.

I did a Sprint Tri 6 months ago and had a good time with it. I will be doing that one again in August.

My original run report was just 2 words "I Finished" To add onto those that stated that the marathon is its own beast, I will agree. You need to give it all of the respect it deserves. I did not train enough as I should have and it kicked my butt. Did more walking than I wanted to. However I did find the finish line. After I left FFigawi I went over and got my pic with Mickey

Hope to meet up with more of you at the Princess and Star Wars weekends.

See y'all over on the other threads.
