Marathon Training thread for 8/8-8/15

Just a quick post before I run off to work...

I AM alive.

I AM in the process of moving.

I AM NOT doing so hot on my training. The weather has been more agreeable for packing than frolicking around outside, so...

I WILL be better soon!

I talked to Cheryl last night. We weren't able to meet in Duluth here, but we did get to have a nice chat! I can't wait to meet all of you. After hearing how sweet she was on the phone, I know for sure that this group is a solid group of friends!

Thanks, Ladies (any Gents?), for being here!
Ashley:wave2:

P.S. I am still wearing my bracelet, but I need to look at it more often. I think I will try it on the other wrist!

After two days of "i'll run later" I pounded the pavement(walked some) for 5.6 miles. The longest I have ever traveled by foot intentionally!!Laying in bed last night I reevaluted my meager training routine and pickup a book I bought 6 months ago called No Need For Speed by John Bingham. It'a a beginners guide to the joy of running. It has a really positve approach with alot of testimonials and sensible training tips. Well it worked for one day. I'm going to read more each night to keep motivated. My weight has staggnated. This irratates me because I have been 90% good with nutrition, cutting out most sugars and white flour things. Just need to be patient. I can just imagine how much easier it would be to pack on the miles without pulling a 40 pound plow LOL.

Hey, LittleMissMickey- Are you moving south to the Big Cities? I know what you mean about the weather. This morning it was 43 degrees here(BRRRmidji) and 40 miles away it was 39. This weekend is supposed to be beautiful though. I'm off to a Family Reunion on Lake of the Woods. Can't wait.It will be fun to meet at the start line in Jan.

Hi Decaf! Congratulations on pushing yourself further today! Please share any tips you think are relevant from the book. It sounds very helpful. I do a "no sugar/no white flour" food plan, too! (well, I mostly do it-- I had a rough weekend last weekend with the food).

Keep up the great work!

I did lower body weights and recombant stationery bike today.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:

Q- I don't want to walk today.... what should I do?

A- I DON'T KNOW- THIS IS REALLY HOW I FEEL TODAY- I NEED YOU GUYS TO GIVE ME THE ANSWER!

Put on your walking clothes and shoes on and go about your daily jobs etc... Then step outside and enjoy the sunshine, scenery, etc. for 5 min. walk off the porch to the street or drive. Now tell your self your only going to the end of the block and back. I usually works for me. Sometimes you just have to fool yourself into fitness. Sounds pretty corny! Hate those days. Wish I could bottle some of the energy that I have somedays and then I can use it when i'm feeling unmotivated.

Good Luck. If it doesn't work try again tomorrow. You'll be out there in no time.

Hi Buddies!

Last night I went right to the gym before I allowed myself to be sidetracked. I went for 30 minutes "running" in the pool as an attempt at aerobics. I found that I did not feel as though I did anything aerobic. I did an additional 15 minutes of laps and felt more aerobi-sized.

I am wondering if I did something wrong (technique-wise) in the water aerobic portion. I will be trying to find out some more about this activity. After pool I did some upper body weight machines. I had dinner then topped off my day with an easy mile and a quarter walk (about 30 minutes).

I am liking that Hal Higdon link and may seek out the book.

Today I have started out my day with 20 minutes Winsor Pilates. I get to go to have my hairs done tonight after work, so I am not sure what else I will get to do.

decaff38, thanks for that book info. I think the slower/longer distance approach may be what my body will be more receptive to and I may look into that as I am into the Hal Higdon site. My goal is to not be swept and get that medal! If speed occurs as time goes, well ok. If speed does not occur, I am still moving!

mishoe01, Monica, sorry about your job loss. Hope all works out for you. I hope you can destress through your walking.

karebear1, glad you got your spa lined up already. I would love to do that, but have had bad experiences with massages causing me more pain than I bargained to have.

geetey, glad that you are going at it. It is never too late!

pixiechick, Colleen, Happy to hear that you are working those races. Have fun at the world.

tw1nsmom, how are you feeling today. I hope your back is better.

ohMom, Molli, since I missed your birthday, Happy Unbirthday!

I don't mean to ignore anyone else here, so please don't be offended that I didn't mention you by name. Hope to become more acquainted with everyone now.

HalHigdon.com says about walking...
"The secret is consistency. Make walking a regular habit--a daily habit, not just something you do on the weekends or when the weather is nice. Mark Fenton states: "The fitness walker must make a positive commitment to exercise a certain number of days a week over a specific distance or length of time, even if some of those days show fairly modest efforts."'

Otherwise you may try the Juggling portion of the site, but you must know that it still must be done.

So get up and do your thing! You know you can do something, anything. I'm cheering for you!
:cheer2: :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :cheer2:
uh oh, I think I broke something. Cheering is tough work.

Hi all!

Today's an off day for me. Tomorrow I'm scheduled for 4 and a 10 mile run on Sat. Then it's off to Disney. And, yes, I will run there. If you see a slightly overweight middle aged woman running around OKW say hi!! (There's a pretty picture, huh? :p )

Karen: You usually don't regret going out, even when you don't want to, but usually do if you just wimp out and don't even try to do something, even just a mile. However, some days defy that theory. The trick is figuring out whether you need the break or whether it's lack of discipline. Be honest with yourself. Your training won't be ruined because of a day off, but I find that mentally I need to stay tough or I "take advantage" of myself and slack.

decaff: Isn't it funny how your perception of distance begins to change? I bet 5 miles doesn't seem as far as it used to.

tigerlily: I need to start doing my pilates workouts again. And swimming...oy! I did laps the day while my son had lessons. I can run 12 miles but was so out of breath from swimming. Amazing how my body responded so differently! As far as races-I'm starting to LOVE them. Once you start to get past the fear of being last (I think I'm almost there) they are so much fun!

geetey: Hi and welcome! Feel free to post as much, or as little as you want. Lots of us pop in and out. Somedays I need more "hand holding" than other days.

mishoe01: sorry about work! Take care of yourself!

glad to see people checking in! Jody...oh Jody..... (yup, I'm calling you out! :teeth: --blame Karen!)

have a good one everybody!

Hi all! Thanks for the well wishes. I'm feeling a lot better today. I let myself have a down day today. My friends from college have all come to visit. My house is a little bit of a madhouse. Fun, but crazy. I plan on doing an easy 30 minute walk tommorrow and a six mile walk on Sunday. I may not post for a few days. My friends are leaving tommorrow and then my mom is taking the kids for the night. DH and I are going out:Pinkbounc :bounce: .

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Hey everyone...

Looks like lots of posts from everyone but me!! I can relate to those of you mentioning lots of life getting in teh way...and of course in my neck of the woods....Bonnie was one wet tropical storm! We didn't get much wind, but was glad the rain wasn't more than we got! It's BEE-utiful here today...bright blue skies...cotton candy clouds....mid 80's. Gee, if I just had a big theme park with a castle in the middle, it would be perfect! ::yes::

I called today to double check my room for the 1/2. We're arriving on the 7th (Friday) and leaving on the 11th (Tuesday). I don't have any plans except sis and I are planning to do one day in Epcot...just lazily walking the world. We won't have passes, so we'll have to buy a one-day ticket. We were thinking to head there and hang out after the marathon, but I don't know if we'll feel like much walking. Anyway, we've also got Monday if that works better. But, other than that, no other plans. We're staying at POP, but I may upgrade to POFQ when FL res rates come out. I'm leaving the kids home with DH. ::yes::

Monica, I'm so sorry about your job. It's great that you have a connection and are ready to land on your feet. And getting to Orlando sooner, that's not all bad! We do have a trip planned for November, but we're still not sure we'll be making that trip. With the situation with my mom and all, we're just not sure what will happen. If mom is still hanging on at that time, we'll be home with her. Otherwise, we'll head to see Mickey and we're planning much down time. If we go on the trip, we will NEED that downtime!

Karen, I don't know the answer to your question. I've lost many workout days lately and I'm honestly struggling to get back in teh fray. But I do have it on my calendar for tomorrow...an appointment at 5AM with me. ::yes::

Ashely, good luck with your move!

Geetey, glad to have you on the thread.

tw1nsmom- hope you are feeling better!

ohMom- belated :cake: :bday: to you!! AND :bday: :cake: to your DD! Nice that your days are close. Mine is the day before my mom's and usually somewhere around mom's day. This yar I was on mother's day and she was the day after. (I think?)

Susan, If our Nov trip happens, I'm looking for a good discount and a move to the Swan or Dolphin. Then I'll be walking those paths, too!!

Ok...all from me for now. Congrats to all of you for the great miles you are putting in!! I'll join you at 5AM tomorrow...SHARP!!

This is my second post today but I have to share with those that understand. I planned my long run/jog today. I had driven the route and thought it was close to 5 miles but didn't write it down. I just got out there and said I'm doing this loop no matter how far or how long. Slapped on 2 pedometers one doesn't have a stop watch so I wear two. Put on my head phones and tuned in a good station and I was off. 73 minutes later I was in my driveway. I checked both pedometers and one said 1.5 miles and the other said 2.3 miles. I was really disappointed that I hadn't put on more miles. Low and behold on my way to town' I decided to drive the loop again and it was 4.8 miles!!! That means I did 15.20 minute miles and I really didn't push myself too hard. I just had to share. Since my family doesn't know I'm training for a 1/2 marathon (They think I'm just trying to lose some pounds.) They just don't really get too excited. I amazed myself!! Thanks for listening!! Beckie

Just a quick question...

pixiechick, are you staying at OKW in January?

Just curious. Trying to figure out if I am the only one! (I am contemplating a move, but I don't know that I can afford to do it points-wise.

Anybody else for OKW?

I am going to start next weeks thread with the big ask for info for the spreadsheet... Lots of new people on here!

Keep up the good work, everybody, maybe you'll get my buns out there!

Ashley:wave2:

Hi Folks! I'm not sure if I can do this --- but I'm sure going to try [thanx Karen Baby!];)

Just got the TM set up tonite and I walked for a little -- sweatin' ALOT :teeth:

1/2 mile - 13 minutes

:sunny:

Hi, Everyone! I've read through the thread, so know that I am thinking of each of you!

I think (to us all, but especially Karen, today) that the hardest thing to do in the training is to tie up the running shoes and walk out the door!

I've been good this week, and even visited the Fitness Centre at the hotel on Monday night---after my carb load ( :earseek: ) dinner.

I think that I'm okay for the 1000 minutes in the month thread, but I'll wait until Saturday to work it out.

Remember: Just put one foot in front of the other 'cause slow and steady wins the race. . . and the Donald medal!

wovenwonder--Good for you! I was where you were 4 weeks ago. A bit everyday or even twice a day will make a huge difference. Try to be consistant to start but don't push to hard .Just do some each day. Let your body take it's time catching up to your mind. You'll avoid the possible aches and pains or injury. You'll be on your way in no time!! Can't wait to meet all these wishers at the castle in Jan.

YEAH JODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You did it girlie! You got on that treadmill and walked yourself into a sweat! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

How are you feeling? I knew you wouldn't let yourself down. You've taken the hardest step my friend- that would be the FIRST one- it's all downhill from here!
Good for you!

Beckie- WOOHOO for you too! I love surprises- don't you?!?!?! That is a great time. Sounds like you'll have no problem getting to the finish line now! You won't be swept for sure!!! You didn't amaze me though- I've always known you had it in you!

Ashley- can you send me everyone's info in a different format? I couldn't figure out how to get in from what you sent. I'm a little SLOW when it comes to computers too! I miss seeing you post Ashley. When .....oh when..... are you coming back regularly?!?!? We need your youthful enthusiasm!!

Thanks to all who so thoughtfully answered my question for the day. You should know that after reading your responses, I got my lazy big bum off of the sofa a walked my 2 miles for the day. thanks for your encouragement!!! You're all the BEST!

I think we should make our own marathon training book for half marathon trainees. Wouldn't that be hysterical??? I can just imagine the illustrations! HA!!!!

Won't that be the photo op of the day!??!? We'll use it as the cover to our training book!

Can you tell I'm ready to travel? I've been on here 5 times today!

Ashley: right now, we're booked at the Dolphin using Starwood points. I'm hoping for an AP rate. To book DVC, I would need to borrow from next year but if an AP rate came out I wouldn't be able to use the points I borrowed in time. The starwood reservation can be cancelled with no problem. If an AP rate comes out, we still haven't decided where to stay. The leaders are WL, Poly and BW. Such problems I have in life!

Glad to see how hard we are all working! We are a great bunch of people!

Hi everyone:wave2: and welcome all you newbies:wave:

Ashley - I think we need a new spreadsheet, if yuo need help let me know. and good luck with the move- miss your inspiration!

Congrats karen on getting out there- you go girl:Pinkbounc
And jodi - glad to see your now in training - way to go:Pinkbounc
Becky - Wow you are the woman!

I did not have a computer for a few days and really was in withdraw:) I need and want to come here each day sometimes 2x. You are all sooooo motivating:D

I have yet to wash my sneaks but will take the advice posted- thanks!

I can't remember who just signed up for cruises- congratulations you will have the BEST time! if you have any questions the cruise forum is wonderful and we did a 4 night last year so feel free to ask.

I have lots of quotes that I clip & save. The one on my frig now is "If it is to be, it is up to me." & "Fill your life with tiny and large adventurous moments." I figure the 1/2 wdw marathon is a very large adventure for me and if it is going to happen, I have to make it happen. And that means training. Walking and gathering inspiration from all of you. Thanks I know I can do it;)

For the ladies - if you want a fun light hearted book, I loved "Eat Mangoes Naked" SARK.

Sorry Monica for your lay-off. It's been 6 months since mine. If you want to vent feel free to pm me. Everything happens for a reason - right:)

It's late and I haven't had the chance to do anymore walking today. I will be glad that I have taken this off time as I have been wobbling about a bit more today from the last couple of days. I can't wait to see what I can get into tomorrow!

Thank you everyone for your posts. It helps to know what others are doing.

Auntmeme, I think the book sounds fun and I might see if I can find it at the library. Thanks.

wovenwonder, Jody, You are doing it! Now just keep at it and you will amaze yourself. I am smiling for you!

karebear1, Karen, you too! That is wonderful that you went on even if you didn't feel like stepping out. Yes, what a book we could all write! That would be something.

Debbie, Good for you that you are on the road and still working at this! Your mantra has been what keeps me going. I repeat it often.
...slow and steady wins the race. . . and the Donald medal!
::yes:: I want that medal! :hyper:

decaff38, you have a great pace going there! How exciting!

LittleMissMickey, Ashley...get your buns out there! :teeth:
I'm still not sure where I'm staying. By the time I start this ressie process, I will be grateful for anything that is left I guess.

trola2m glad that things are sunny now. That storm stuff would stress me for sure.

tw1nsmom, Have fun on your weekend.

pixiechick, enjoy your run around OKW. It is beautiful there.
