ibouncetoo,

I'm not a low carber but I don't do sugar (not even fruit juice) so I've been wondering what sort of 'energy drink' might work for me. Please keep us posted on your research.

Sundie_ Thanks for the info. It still is amazing to me!! I'm trying to incease my mileage a bit at a time. I'll make it!! We have a wonderful trail at a State Park 5 miles from here. I need to get out there and check it out.

Karebear: My friend had a similar tendon pain. She began wearing Birkenstocks and was told that when she was sitting she should slid her feet back under her chair and rest onthe balls of her toes. This strenches the tendons gently. She was faith ful and the pain subsided in about 4 weeks. Just some thoughts.

We will arrive on Fri. Jan. 7th. and are at WDW until Wed. then over to Universal until Mon. I know my family will want to get going on their vacation as soon as w arrive. I am going to try to get them to do Animal Kingdom on Sat. so i won't really kill myself before the marathon. Any other advice?

I'm off to Curves today. It is again 50 degrees and raining today. I will try to run later today if the rain lets up. A mist is fine but downpour is just too much.

Auntmeme: How'd you shoes turn out??I have to wash soccer cleaats and shin guards that was and they turn out great.

i can't believe it's been like a week since i've checked in. this is not good -- i've been a slacker!

thanks for the b-day wishes LAWalz -- it was a great weekend. sheeplishly I admit to not counting my WW pts and/or exercising like I should've/could've/would've. but its water under the bridge. i'm a bit overwhelmed with things to do in our last two weeks of summer -- and I haven't been true to my commitment to run/walk three times a week. Actually I forgot about it until yesterday!! i'm going to have to start over on my training program as I've missed two jogs now and am still having trouble with my orthotics. After WISH chat last night (where were you by the way???) i'm leaning on not using my orthotics for running and powerwalking and seeing how that goes. I have a rechecked scheduled for thursday but i'm going to have to reschedule. I'm going to go into Cols or Cinci and get a fitted by the pros at a running store for good shoes for me! I will commit to going there either next week with evansmom or the first week of school after that!

WELCOME tigerlily to our marathon training thread!!!

meme-- which boardwalk did you vacation on? we enjoyed ocean city MD alot ::yes::

karebear-- PD for getting to the heart of your aches and pains and correcting them!! I have tendonitis in my foot and was treated for that for a couple years without knowing WHY I had tendonitis. it was just a symptom of a bigger problem. now I know why and am still ironing out the details but i know i'll get something to work b/c I have to finish this 1/2!!

i think ashely has a spreadsheet of all of us and when/where details for the marathon trip. Mom and I (alreadexcitedgrammy) will be coming in Friday afternoon and leaving on Tuesday Jan 11. we are staying at CBR with evansmom (who will return when school starts soon here)

i have really gotten excited about our cruise, but i need to shift that to the back burner and concentrate on my marathon trip now! you know the newness of booking a big exciting disney trip!! i know you know!

well anyhow, that has become quite lengthy, sorry. I have walked the past two evenings with my other neighbor - slower paced but about 2.5 miles i'm guessing. I'll ask her she measures her paths out. My hips were really really stiff so it was slow going for me for sure; but that was after a long day at state fair either sitting and then standing for one duration of four hours! by the end of the walk i was feeling better and glad I had done it. I think i'll do a lighter exercising day today, maybe a bike ride and then walking with my neighbor tonight again. I'll jog tomorrow-- yes indeed!

Oh my gosh! Sometimes this site can be soooo frsutrating! I just typed this long response and submitted it and it cam back with server too busy at this moment! UGH!!!!!

Anyway- I did my 2 miles in 39:30 this morning. A little hip pain that worked it's way out b y the first half mile and 2 foot jabs, right at the 1 mile mark- but nothign for the 2nd- so i think tha's improvement!

I wrote individual comments to everyone, but don't have time to ge back a redo... so I'll just say GOOD WORK EVERYONE!

Question of the Day-

Q- Why do I have to run so slow?
A- The physiological changes that take place in the muscles of an endurance runner take place in an environment with an abundance of usuable oxygen. When you are training at the right pace (80% effort) you are working at a rate that maximizes those changes. This pace minimizes injury, burnout and ovewr training.

I got a lot of good info from this question. I think my recent injury is because I tried to go for time instead of build up endurance.

Hope everyone has a good training day today!

I had to settle for the stationary bike for todays workout because I still have big blisters on my feet from my long walk on Saturday.

Sundie

Got to curves for a good 40 min. workout. I was really sweating when I finished. Felt good. Dicovered a new drink called FUZE Healthy Infusions -slenderize. It is yummy and has good vitamins in it but no sugar and only 2 carbs in 18 ouzes.
It is monsoon hear so I am house bound. Will pack on the miles tomorrow.

Sorry all that I have been away for so long.

Molli, Thanks for the nudge in chat last night.

I have been working all day, got up and did Pilates before work though. Will try for something tonight. I just LOVE the Hal Higdon site. Thanks I know it will come in handy.

I have only excuses to offer, so I won't go there. I have been doing only some walking, not in as good of a place as I was last year at this time. I am determined to finish the 1/2 in 3 hours and 25 minutes! Haven't registered a flight or room yet. Will do that after DH is done with his hip replacement surgery (surgery is the 24th of this month, so after that). I will be there one way or another. I will find a way kick it up a notch.--for me!

Guess it is the day for checking in - I read (with enthusiasm) everyone's post and I am nodding and agreeing and WOWing at some of the accomplishments you 1/2 and full marathoners are doing! Healthy, we are getting healthy too!

I remember that Ashley was moving home in August - maybe she is changing locations ?

karebear - sometimes I type in Word and then copy into the post - I have "felt your pain" before on that one! I usually am so frustrated cause it was a good post! Take care of those body parts and don't overdo

I just KNOW that NO ONE will be swept! It's okay to be working toward a time but there is still time - many minutes will be "knocked off" the times you are doing now come January. And the "hype" of the crowd, the stored carbs from the pasta party (someone asked about carbs) and there are plenty of things to get energy from to get you through. (Recently saw that Cliff bars is one vendor that will be there - they will have samples and you would be able to by bars the day before the race I am sure too) When DH ran his marathon - he signed up to run with Cliff bars pace team (I don't think they have walking pace teams tho) They even had some bars that have caffeine in them too! Someone said they don't eat sugar - do you eat honey? My DH has an english muffin and honey before his long runs. He also carries peppermints for a quick boost, but of course that is straight sugar. When he marathon trained he also had orange slices (commonly see those distributed at long runs)

Back to sweeping - Beachbum a long time ago said if you can get to mile 9 (I think) when you get into MK they don't sweep anyone.

And - guess what I have a long term reason to keep eating healthy and losing - my DH and I are going on that cruise with ohMOm and her family ::yes:: they asked us to join them and DH said if I wanted to (yes, he is a nice guy) so well we are booked! It's the vision of wearing a bathing suit that will keep me in line for Nov 2005 - our first Disney cruise and DH's birthday while we are sailing - FUN, FUN, FUN!!

Keep up the good work all you trainees - there is a Donald/Mickey Medal waiting for you :wave2:

I went out tonight and walked 1/2 hour out and back as best I could. I think I went about 3 1/2+ miles in that hour total. Not exactly certain, but I did it! I just felt that I couldn't "High Five" in Monday's chat and not complete this first day. I am doing the dance that I did it!:teeth:

Thanks to everyone for posting here. I appreciate the support and info.

Congrats AEG on the upcoming cruise. You have something to keep working toward. They say once you have reached a goal that the hardest part is in maintenance. Your daughter and family are great having you enjoy this time with them. This will keep you focused until it becomes a healthy habit for you. You will just love that cruise too. ::yes::

I have heard that miles will not be posted along the way. Does anyone know if there will be any way to judge any estimate of miles accomplished?

Tigerlily- can you explain what you're trying to get at here? It's late and is not registering with my brain what info you want. Are you talking about miloes being posted at the marathon??? If so... they are most definetly posted- on BIG signs with Disney characters! They're very cute and have insiprational sayings on them.

very quick -- today is DD's birthday and much to do!

this post and my invitation to tigerlily to join us motivated me this morning -- seriously -- i have the summer sleep-in'itis!!!

i did 3.6 miles - walking approx .5 then jogging .7 - three times in 45 mins. not great not horrible

going to do 10 mins yoga to stretch and hit the shower!!!

more tomorrow-----------------------

Hi all! Sorry I haven't posted in a while, life just got in the way.

This past weekend I pulled something in my upper back/shoulders/neck area (I tend to carry my stress in this are...I also lift the kids too much), so I didn't get my Sunday long walk in. I was able to do 30 minute walks on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Today is a rest day.

I'd like to say that I made wonderful food choices, but I can't. Oh well, I can't change the past, just charge forward:rolleyes: .

We made our travel plans for the marathon. We arrive late on the 6th and are staying at the airport Hyatt. The next day we'll pick up our rental car and check into Pop Century. We'll stay there until the 13th when we'll return to the Hyatt and fly out very early on the 14th. I was able to cash in frequent flier/credit card points and we're getting the Hyatt, the rental car, and our airfare for free! I can't wait to meet everyone!

BTW, I want to wish a belated happy birthday to OhMom:bday:

I also wanted to add that DH, DD, and Ds will be coming with me in January.

another belated :bday: to Molli!

A quick checkin... my race last week went well. Didn't win any prizes but ran a better time than ever before. Made the mistake of getting in my parent's hot tub Sat. night though and my legs are still paying the price. I knew better, but it looked sooo inviting...

glad to hear everyone's trying to get their workouts in. Once fall hits and the heat goes, kids (and some of us grownups!)go back to school, etc. we'll settle into a decent routine. Plus, the countdown will really begin then!

We head back down to WDW on Sunday for a week at OKW. Can't wait. Then it's back to reality--setting up my classroom and all the other fun things necessary for back to school time. Yuck!

train well!

Colleen

Oh no Colleen! Say it isn't so! I have my first EVER theraputic water massage at 2:30 Sunday afternoon - right after the marathon. What happened to your legs because you went into the jacuzzi???

Oh, I thought I heard somewhere that the miles along the route were not posted for those running under the full marathon. I couldn't understand how this could be (holding a race without mileage notations prominantly displayed and wondered that). That answers my question then. Thanks

Today, Wednesday, I have started out my day with the Winsor Pilates 20 min as I like to do. Not sure what I will do after work.

Hello WISH walkers!

I hope it's okay to just jump in here but I am ready to get into some serious half marathon training. I hope I am not too late!

This is my first week 'back' so I am just doing WATP miles. I look forward to gaining any tidbits of wisdom this group has to share - especially any training tips!

I did my 3 miles today and did it in 59:30

No pain!! YEAH!!

Don't have much time today to post, but did want to do the question of the day for ya- so..... here it is!

Q- Can't I just run shorter distances faster, then slow down and go longer on race day?
A- No, the body does not work that way. In order for your body to make the endurance fuel supply cahnges necessary for road race distances, you need the long slow runs. An occasional race won't hurt, but most of your training should be focused on the completing the long slow runs.

Ah heck...... I can't resist.....

Getty- WELCOME! We've been posting this thread on a weekly basis for the past 2 months or so- you can gets lots of info juts by reading those threads if you'd like! Have you started any kind of training at all??

Tigerlily- Those signs are up every mile I think. I'm planning on taking a very small camcorder with me on my run so I can take video of my first EVER run! I'm taking pics at all those signs too! I don't care if it slows me down! It may be the ONLY time I ever do this! And I want PROOF!!!!:teeth:

Colleen- I want more info on that race! PLEASE???? Are you the one that was gonna check the hill by the Contemporary for the marathon route?

Tw1nsmom- come through the computer screen.... I'll give you a massage! ::yes:: I just had my neck adjusted by my chiropractor- it feels so much better now! Do you see a chiropractor?

Mom- YEAH!!! You got out and did your thing! More power to ya!

Grammy- isn't it exciting to think about cruising??? We'll take ours the Saturday after the half marathon. ANd I can't stand it! Two GLORIOUS weeks of Disney!!! Yipppeee!

I alkso wanted to say one last thing-- AS I was walking on the treadmill this morning, I was thinking how glad I was that we have this thread. It would've been really easy for me this past week to just give up and stop walking when that injury occured. As it is my body feels so weak- and my first response is to just sit down and quit. But I really wanted to post here and needed to have something to say- so I kept walking! Thanks all- you do a good job of keeping me in check!

Karen,

Hot tubs (what I was in) tend to increase inflamation. Something about the heat and the blood in the muscles. That's why you should always ice an injury not apply heat to it. You should be fine with the massage. The key is cooler water. I would assume they don't want the water too warm. You could always call and double check. Did you tell them you were coming in after the half?

The "hill by the contermporary check" wasn't me. But I did look when we were there in June. I think it's right in front of CR, isn't there an underpass where the lagoon goes over--or am I remembering wrong? I'm not worried about it. I figure that's mile 9 and by mile 10 we'll be hitting the MK. That hill means I'm closer to running down Main St. Bring that baby on!!!

got to get dinner, just wanted to talk Karen down from the ledge!! :teeth:

Hi everyone---sorry I've been MIA for a while....life has intruded 100%!!

Have not been good about walking or eating since Friday - I got layed off :(...still trying to think the best of this situation, but have bad moments too. Then I was w/o cable (TV or modem) for almost 48hrs! Finally got everything fixed today about noon.

I was the one who was going to check out "contemporary hill" - that will be probably the 6th of Sept. But the more thoughts and opinions about it the better.

Am trying to get my act together to get my house packed up, so that I can move to Fl earlier than originally planned. I spoke w/ my old boss (when I lived in Orlando) and she's going to keep me posted in case something opens up earlier. Will try to get my butt out the door tomorrow to do some walking.

I forgot who's doing the 10K (is it you Jackie?)....who knows, maybe if I'm down there, I'll join you.

Beth - did I read that you're heading down in Oct?

I will keep everyone posted as to my moving progress, and once I'm down there - I hope to meet those who come to visit (maybe meet for a meal, a walk, or a cup of joe).

I forgot to add---plan for the marathon - checking into CBR on the 6th for 6 nights.

Have a good day!

Monica- so sorry to hear about you losing your job. The one good thing about it (since you're trying to look at the positive side of things) is that it does open up some time for you to train! PLeas ebe sure to check out that hill! I'm a little worried about it, but not as worried as I was after I read what you posted about it. We'll all run through that MK castle togehter! And we'll all be cheering for each other! I can picture it in my head now. Those are the kind of images that keep this little girl going! Thansk for giving us a good visual!!!

Colleen- thanks for the answer. I did tell them I would be doing the half marathon when I made the appointment at the Saraatoga Springs Spa- this massage is specifically for muscles that have been over used- at least according to the description it is! I'll remember that about hot tubs..... but I truely understand why it is soo hard to resist them! So.... why don't you go buy a bunch of ice, dump it in your tub and do the reverse???? (Boy- that doesn't sound as appealing as a hot tub now does it?!?!? :teeth: )

One last thing- I talked to Jody (wovenwonder) tonight- she's gonna be joining us regularly now. She's having a hard time (like the rest of us at one time or another) getting started on her training and I told her we'd help. We've all been there before haven't we??? Anyway- I know she'll be able to get up and do it if we will help her along the way, so....

WELCOME BACK JODY! Get ready to RUMBLE girlie! We're gonna get you and anyone else that wants to, ready for this marathon! We won't leave you behind!!! Will we????
